Further to the article in ‘Frontline’ and in reference to the approach I have developed it is important to clarify that whilst my approach does include a series of techniques which restore movement and maintain natural posture of the upper cervical spine, and whilst they are powerful, they are a small part of what I have developed.
My clinical experience of over 13000 hours with headache and migraine sufferers has demonstrated that neck disorders, as the cause of sensitisation, are significantly underestimated in migraine, tension and cluster headache, menstrual migraine …. sufferers.

Natural migraine relief
There are many natural ingredients as well as therapies that provide relief from migraines. They are:
Feverfew: This herb has been used for centuries as a remedy for headache, migraine, arthritis, pain, and fever. It became especially popular in England in the 1980s as an alternative to conventional drugs for migraines.
5-HTTP: 5-Hydroxytryptophan is a compound produced in the body from the amino acid tryptophan. It is used in the body to make the neurotransmitter serotonin and the hormone melatonin. It is also available in supplement form. Research indicates that it may prevent migraines and reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.

Pain in the head is known as a headache. The scientific name for the condition is cephalalgia. Headaches are one of the most frequently reported conditions. In fact, it is estimated that everyone experiences mild to severe headache at some point in his or her life. Pain during a headache is experienced in one or more parts of the head as well as the back of the neck. The pain may be experienced in the nerves extending over the scalp and specific nerves located in the face, mouth and throat. Besides, the muscles of the head and the blood vessels located on the surface and base of the brain too may become painful.

In survey of 75 patients who had undergone surgery for facial pain all had ongoing symptoms. The researchers concluded that the causes of symptoms were migraine, cluster headache, paroxysmal hemicrania and tension headache, and that sinus surgery in the large majority of patients presenting with facial pain should avoid surgery; that all surgeons when assessing facial pain should be aware of non-sinuonasal diagnoses.
An enlightened ENT Specialist refers patients to me to determine if facial pain is referred from disorders of the upper neck – and more often it is! Temporary reproduction and easing of familiar facial pain when upper neck structures are gently stressed confirms this in the large majority of patients with facial pain.

So You Have Tension-Type Headache – How Do You Feel About This Diagnosis?
It was probably almost a throw away line and immediately dismissed as nothing to worry about – just get on with your life! But in my experience often ‘tension-type’ headache, whilst usually less severe than a ‘migraine’, is more annoying with the constancy of it, the inability to shake it off, wearing you down. One wonders whether it would be better to have severe pain for a day and then be pain-free for a period of time!
Over 150 years ago, primarily because of the throbbing nature of headache, it was presumed that the major problem was (expansion or dilatation of) the blood vessels – and since any headache that was/is throbbing in nature was diagnosed as migraine and non-throbbing headaches were excluded from a diagnosis of migraine – the idea of tension headache developed, for despite the lack of evidence, the cause of non-throbbing headaches was considered to be muscular (of the scalp and forehead) and/or stress related; another assumption was made!

The medical model of headache and migraine recognises two conditions – migraine and tension-type headache. Recently the International Headache Society introduced a third ‘group’ of headaches; this group comprises Cluster Headache, Chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania, SUNCT, and Hemicrania Continua.
In this model, the assumption has been the pain of tension headache arises from increased tension in the muscles of the scalp and forehead. However research has shown:

I have mentioned in my previous blogs that sensitisation of the brainstem has been
demonstrated in migraine, tension headache, menstrual migraine and cluster headache.
What I may not have made clear is that this sensitised state is present even when you are

Headache is one of the most general problems faced by every person. There are mainly three types of headache like tension headache, migraine headache and cluster headache. The tension headache is one of the most ordinary headaches; this headache attacks the muscles in the back neck. The muscle attacks can cause the tissues over and also create the brain a very tight; this can cause the pain not only in the back but also on the top and front of the head.
Other headache is migraine, it is caused due to the genetic condition and it is passed to the women rather than men. It is caused due to the nervous abnormalities, eye strain, shock, grief, worries, gastro-intestinal irregularities and also mental stress like stress, anxiety, fear, jealously and love. And cluster headache is caused due to the excess consumption of smoking and alcohols. Some other causes and symptoms of headaches are aches around the head, neck, and eye, allergy, stress, tension, eye strain, eyesight weakness, high or low blood pressure, high or low blood sugar, constipation, dehydration, insomnia and cold temperatures.
