What is a migraine headache?
Migraine headaches are chronic, recurring vascular headaches, often occurring more than 15 days a month, with episodes lasting anywhere from 4 to 72 hours. According to medicinenet.com, migraines are caused by the enlargement of blood vessels that “causes the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the large arteries of the brain”. The enlarged blood vessels stretch the nerves coiling around them, causing the nerves to release chemicals, and these chemicals cause “inflammation, pain, and further enlargement of the artery”, thus increasing the pain.
Symptoms of migraines:
i have a tendency to get sick and lose vision right before and during the headache, and from time to time one side of my face, arm and hand will go numb right I have been a neurologist, and been given a clean bill of health except for the headaches. i welcome any and all suggestions as to ways i can reduce the pain when one comes on!!
I’m a sixteen year old girl and for the last three months I’ve had extremely painful migraine headaches. I’ve been to the doctor and he’s given me prescriptions for Midrin and for Ulrum. Neither of these worked for the pain, which is generally in the back of my head or like a halo on the top of my head. He also has given me a prescription for Darvacet, which worked great for the pain but put me to sleep and made me so loopy I couldn’t function. When I have my headaches I have extreme sensitivity to light and sound and sleeping seems to be the only way I have any relief. They are so bad that I can’t get myself out of bed and they are causing be to miss school. Do you have any advice for me, and is there a medicine that you have used that I can ask my doctor about.
I went on a hike earlier and was up on the mountain for about 4.5 hours, in mild heat (but very breezy) and sun. On my way home I got a migraine that I’ve now had for seven hours.
I have a few prescription migraine medications due to chronic headaches I’ve had for 3 months (no known cause yet), including Amitriptyline and Sumatriptan. I’ve taken both medications since the onset of this migraine with no relief. Could I possibly have heat exhaustion? My headache is the only symptom of it that I had until about an hour ago when I became nauseated, but it’s bad and I can’t get rid of it even with prescription medication.
