I read online that your supposed to lay in a dark room and relax, but I can&#8217;t do that in school and I can&#8217;t bring and asprin to school with me either cuz we aren&#8217;t allowed. Any tips on how to get rid of them during school or at least lessen the intensity??</p>

<p><i>Answer by Douglas B</i><br />Headaches of all kinds get their start with tight neck muscles.  It&#8217;s what all happens after that cause people to give them different names.  Your neck muscles go to the top of your head for its movements and when the muscles are tight at the top they pull on other muscles that go around the brain and when they get tight and give you pain you have your headache.  The stress people feel is because the tight muscles restrict everything going in and out of your head and when the wastes back up it puts more pressure in your head, feels like stress.  To get rid of the headache you have to free up your neck muscles and here&#8217;s how to do that:<br />
Neck<br />
Put your hands alongside your head so your thumbs are on the front of the muscle under your ear and your fingers are on the back of the muscle behind your neck.  Squeeze your thumb and fingers together and hold.  Relax your body.  When your fingers and thumb touch, about two minutes, slowly lower your head as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your neck lowered for another 30 seconds.<br />
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>People generally find shorter waits better than longer ones. But, according to a new study, there are still times when a shorter waiting period leads to increased stress. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>According to a new study, conducted by Elizabeth Gelfand Miller of Boston College, Barbara E. Kahn of University of Miami, and Mary Frances Luce of Duke University, when waiting for events, such as a doctors appointments or a job interview the level of stress aggravates even if the waiting period is shorter.</p>
<p><span id="more-1902"></span></p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Wait management strategies that are effective in Disney World may cause more stress if implemented in a hospital waiting room, the researchers said. Given that waiting has historically been viewed as negative and that it is likely the only stressor during many (positive) service encounters, shorter waits are generally viewed as better than longer waits. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>However, we propose that the wait itself can facilitate coping with negative events, and thus, that longer waits may result in less stress, they added. In one of the experiments of the study, college students waiting to participate in a group discussion about an undisclosed topic were reviewed.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Some students were informed that they were expected to give an impromptu speech as part of a Career Services exercise and would be judged on demeanour and appearance. Others were told they would merely observe. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>In the follow-up questionnaire, students who had been in the neutral waiting condition were far more likely to rate the waiting duration as their biggest source of annoyance. In contrast, those who had been told they had to give a speech used the waiting time to mentally prepare for the discussion group.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>When the waited-for event is negative, [we] found that consumers were less concerned about potential stress that came from waiting. In fact, in some cases consumers actually preferred extra waiting time so that they could cope with the impending event, the researchers said.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>In an experiment where participants were required to wait before engaging in a specific task, shorter waiting times and information about how long the wait would be reduced total stress for those waiting for neutral events, but increased total stress for those waiting for negative events.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Our work provides a new perspective on managing waits. While the waiting literature has historically viewed waits as something negative that should be reduced, we demonstrate that the validity of this assumption is contingent on the situation, write Miller, Kahn, and Luce. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Traditional strategies that focus only on the wait and not the overall experience may result in wait management strategies that can exacerbate overall customer satisfaction rather than improve it, they added. </p>

He is beginning to have sharp piercing headaches that come on him all of the sudden then go away only to come back a few minutes or days later. He has also begun to have nose bleeds and he has a twitch in his arm.  Since he has had seizures from this, I think the twitches are an early sign. </p>
<p>What can be done to help him? Is it most likely his stress he isn&#8217;t coping with?</p>

When you are finished move on to the next.</p>

<p>2. Learn to say &#8216;No&#8217;: People often have a problem saying &#8216;no&#8217; end up saying &#8216;yes to everything, taking on too much for fear of hurting or upsetting others. They end hurting themselves. Learn what your boundaries are, and how much you can handle. Once you reach that limit, do not take on any more. Others will understand, for they themselves are on overload, otherwise they would not be asking for your help.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>3. Avoid known stressors: If there are certain parts of your day where you know you will encounter stressors, try to alter your pattern. For instance, if you get upset in traffic try not to leave the house at rush hour. Get up a little earlier so you can miss the traffic &#8211; and possibly go for a workout before your working day begins. Then you can leave the office sooner and miss the traffic on the way home. If you can&#8217;t avoid the traffic, then prepare yourself for it. Bring some soothing music to listen to, or a tape of something you want to learn. At least then if you are sitting in traffic, you can enjoy yourself.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>4. Don&#8217;t set unrealistic goals: Many of us want to do everything and do it as quickly as possible. We are impatient and our society has programmed us to expect results straight away, whether that be in health care, career advancement, or via high-speed Internet. Our failure to achieve goals is a major stressor. Reset your goals to be attainable, and attainable within realistic time frames.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>5. Positive affirmation: Wake up and look in the mirror and take note of one positive thing a day. If you see something you don&#8217;t like, then look away for now. Don&#8217;t focus on the negative, however hard that may seem. The actual process of looking for &#8216;good&#8217; is calming &#8211; and finding it will improve your mood and outlook. Some simple at-home techniques for reducing stress:</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Massage: By reducing stress and increasing your feel-good brain hormones, dopamine and serotonin, massage makes you more relaxed, happier and it decreases your hunger-centre activity. This leads to less stress and less craving. Massage therapy is defined as the treatment of disease or injury through the manual manipulation of body tissues. Massage is employed for the relief of pain and spasm, to induce relaxation, to stretch and break down scarring and adhesions, and to increase circulation and metabolism. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>It promotes the resorption and metabolism of toxins and the residua of inflammation. The relaxation benefits of massage therapy are not just subjective &#8211; massage has been shown to decrease both noradrenaline and cortisol levels in the blood, urine and saliva. That wonderful feeling you get at the end of a massage is not just from lying down quietly for a period of time. There is a significant therapeutic effect from receiving regular massage therapy, which clearly goes far beyond simple musculoskeletal pain relief. Simple massage techniques can also be practised at home to help relieve stress.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>1. Use a massaging shower-head, which augments the benefits of superficial heat from the water.<br />&#13;</p>
<p>2. Move a simple wooden roller-type massager back and forth across the neck, back or feet.<br />&#13;</p>
<p>3. Use commercial electric massagers, with or without heat.<br />&#13;</p>
<p>4. Have a partner apply slow, gentle, finger, thumb or hand pressure.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Safety: Contraindications are few. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Following acute injury or a severe flare-up of an existing injury, or in the presence of an open wound, local massage would not be advisable in that area. However, distant massage or massage therapy performed on other parts of the body is advisable to help increase the effects of the immune system and decrease inflammatory mediators, and cortisol levels. In order to receive these benefits, massage can be performed anywhere on the body. It is avoided in certain cancers to avoid promoting spread.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Aromatherapy: Aromatic healing oils can be used during a therapeutic massage. These essential oils are absorbed both through inhalation and through the skin during a treatment. Throughout the massage, lymphatic drainage, muscle releases and spinal pressures are applied to target the nervous system. Each oil has a different effect, ranging from toxification and relaxation to increasing energy levels. Essential aromatherapy oils for relaxation and stress relief are:</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>• Amber<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• Bergamot<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• Camphor<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• Cedarwood<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• Lavender<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• Poppy<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• Ylang-ylang<br />&#13;</p>
<p>And there are several ways you can use essential oils:<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• Diffuser &#8211; a small metal bowl heated by a candle<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• A few drops in a warm bath<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• In a massage oil<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• A few drops in a facecloth or sponge in the shower<br />&#13;</p>
<p>• As a perfume</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>How to make sure you get sufficient sleep:</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>• Reduce your stress levels: Deep breathing, meditation and massage therapy on a regular basis can decrease overall stress and promote restful sleep. Aromatherapy can also be used before bed. Burn a lavender candle or put a little lavender oil on your pillow. Supplements to help you sleep include melatonin, passionflower and hops (the herbal extract, not the beer).</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>• Get into a routine: Our body loves routine. Providing it with a rehearsed setting for sleep is a valuable step towards a good night&#8217;s sleep. This means getting into bed at about the same time each night.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>• Dim the lights: Once we fall asleep our body starts to produce melatonin, our sleeping hormone. It changes our brain waves from the active beta waves to the calm theta waves of deep sleep. Production of this hormone is also linked to light and darkness. Our body will increase the production of melatonin when it is dark and suppress its production in the light. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>So try to make your room as dark as possible to mimic night-time and increase production of your sleeping hormone. It is also wise not to spend your last hour before getting into bed under bright lights. This will hinder the secretion of melatonin and make sleep more difficult.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>• Exercise: Try to avoid vigorous exercise in the evening, as this is likely to increase cortisol and other stimulatory hormones, which will make relaxation difficult.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>• Food and drink: Eating early (between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. if you plan to go to bed around 10 p.m.) will allow your food to digest before sleep and maximise the fat-burning time between dinner and breakfast. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Avoid a large meal late in the evening, as it is likely to give you a higher than normal peak in glucose levels due to the inactivity that follows as you wind down for the evening. This will increase your hunger hormones, making you want to snack again before bed. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Alcohol is also known to increase hunger hormones, so avoid this if you are having trouble sleeping. Caffeine in tea, coffee or soda can have a long-lasting stimulant effect, interfering with restful sleep. Try to avoid them after lunchtime and certainly during the evening.</p>

<p>Exercise: It helps the body process and excrete adrenaline and cortisol, two chemicals the adrenal gland creates when the body is under stress. And it stimulates the pituitary gland and hypothalamus to create those feel-good peptides we fondly call endorphins. Endorphins reduce pain and induce a sense of well-being. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Distraction: See a movie. Go fishing. Stop and smell the roses. Doctors aren&#8217;t sure what goes on chemically, but PET scans can measure how it moves your brain waves into the relaxed alpha state. You&#8217;re awake, but no longer hyper-alert, no longer obsessing about the problem at hand. Computer fans call it rebooting the brain. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Laughter: It&#8217;s more than distraction; it has the almost instantaneous effect of relaxing the brain, and it can be measured by EEGs, Ms. Bishopric says. &#8220;A good laugh literally affects the entire brain; very little else does that,&#8221; she says. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Crying: Tears of sadness or frustration contain, and thus excrete, toxic chemicals that do not occur in the tears from, say, chopping an onion, Ms. Bishopric says. &#8220;Laughing is still better than crying – unless you really need a good cry.&#8221; </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Sleep: It also reboots the brain. A good eight hours is essential, according to studies comparing the performance of rested people to that of tired people pumped up on coffee. Tired folks have less intellectual ability, more irritability, even depression. Doctors are so impressed they&#8217;re even (occasionally) cutting the 36-hour-shifts they used to demand of interns. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Diet: Stressed people become hungry for the comfort of high-sugar, high-fat foods. But these burn off quickly, leaving them edgy, irritable and even more stressed. Fight stress with a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables and protein. Supplements, especially B vitamins and minerals, can help if you have an incomplete diet. But a good diet is better. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Meditation: In &#8220;agnostic mindfulness meditation,&#8221; people are taught not to empty their minds but to focus them, to pay more attention to the task at hand. Think of Shaq when he&#8217;s in the zone. He might even make a free throw. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Another type of meditation is religious. From a medical perspective it is a relaxation state. Some say prayer is talking to God, and meditation is listening to Him. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Yoga, tai chi: These combine meditation and exercise plus another crucial factor, social support. Some say we have three families, a family of origin (parents, siblings), a family of nurture (spouse and kids), and a family of choice (yoga class). </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The latter is made up of people who are unrelated but whom we like to be with. An American Psychological Association study says people with the most supportive relationships rebounded best from the traumatic stress of 9/11. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Wine: In small amounts, it can help you relax, &#8220;but it&#8217;s not recommended as a medication,&#8221; Dr. Almunia says. Chemically, it&#8217;s a depressant. It will sedate you and later have a rebound stimulant effect. So it&#8217;ll put you to sleep, but wake you an hour later. Use with care. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Herbal teas: A nice brew of ginseng, for instance, can relax you, Dr. Almunia says. &#8220;I do believe they have a calming effect; it&#8217;s been documented through the ages.&#8221; Herbs such as St. John&#8217;s Wort or valerian are for depression, not anxiety, he says, and may interact with drugs. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Aromatherapy: It can help, he says. Burning cinnamon, vanilla or other flavors of oil or incense relaxes some people. &#8220;It could be both physical and mental.&#8221; </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Drugs: Don&#8217;t turn here for relief of temporary stress, Dr. Almunia says. These are for longer-term, more serious anxieties. If you&#8217;re in that category, see your doctor. </p>
