Causes and Treatments of Stress Headaches

Stress headaches are incredibly common, especially in our stressed out culture and while the easiest fix is to pop an aspirin or another over the counter medication for a quick solution but the better plan is to find a long term and permanent solution to keep the headaches at bay. If you only suffer from headaches once in a while, that isn’t a big deal but if they happen a lot, you should try to figure out the underlying cause of them. If your headaches are really severe, you should visit your doctor but you might also find some relief from the following remedies.
You can ease your stress headache with an ice pack. It’s possible to make a quick ice pack using a bag of ice or bag of frozen veggies and wrapping a towel around it. Lie back in a comfortable spot and try to relax while using the ice pack on your forehead, the top of your head and the back of your neck (move it every few minutes from one location to the other). Let it sit the longest where you feel the most pain. Ice acts as an anti-inflammatory which helps lower the amount of pain you are feeling. This won’t address the cause of your tension headaches, but it can be quick way to get relief.
Perhaps the most common cause of the stress headache is dehydration so drinking more water might be a good solution. You don’t always know right away when you are dehydrated particularly if you are distracted by work or other things. Remember: it is a bad idea to drink beverages that are caffeinated like soda or coffee because these can make your headaches worse. Drinking water or maybe some herbal iced tea or pure fruit juice is the best way to rehydrate your body. Eating salty foods contributes to dehydration so you can further help yourself by cutting back on your junk, snack and salty food intake.
Exercise is a great remedy for stress headaches. This is probably too obvious but you’re probably not going to want to exercise if you have a bad headache. You need to concentrate on getting more exercise in general though because that is what will help you reduce the frequency of your headaches. You can prevent your headaches by increasing your oxygen levels and circulation and that is helped best by Aerobic exercise. You shouldn’t try to work out while you have a headache; just start including it in your routine a few times each week and you should see the frequency of your headaches get smaller. There are many ways to treat stress headaches, and you can try one or more of the methods we’ve looked at above. Overall, the best way to prevent these type of headaches from occurring is to learn how to relax, even in situations that tend to make you tense. It will be hard at first but you’ll eventually learn how to keep life from overly stressing you out. Reducing your stress does quite a lot for you not the least of which is stopping your stress headaches.
