Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a brain disorder in which clusters of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain sometimes signal abnormally. Neurons usually generate electrochemical impulses that act on other neurons, glands, and muscles to produce human thoughts, feelings, and actions. In epilepsy, the normal pattern of neuronal activity becomes disturbed, causing strange sensations, emotions, and behavior, or sometimes convulsions, muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness. During a seizure, neurons may fire as many as 500 times a second, much faster than normal. In some people, this happens only occasionally; for others, it may happen up to hundreds of times a day. Epilepsy is not contagious and is not caused by mental illness or mental retardation. a number of people with mental retardation may experience seizures, but seizures do not necessarily mean the person has or will develop mental impairment. Many people with epilepsy have normal or above-average intelligence.

Headache

A tension headache is pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, or neck, usually associated with muscle tightness in these areas. Tension headaches are one of the most common forms of headaches. It may occur at any age, but are most common in adults and adolescents. Tension headaches occur when neck and scalp muscles become tense, or contract. The muscle contractions can be a response to stress, depression, a head injury, or anxiety. If a headache occurs two or more times a week for several months or longer, the condition is considered chronic. Chronic daily headaches can result from the under or over treatment of a primary headache. For example, patients who take pain medication more than 3 days a week on a regular basis can develop rebound headaches.Any activity that causes the head to be held in one position for a long time without moving may cause a headache. Such activities include typing or other computer work, fine work with the hands, and using a microscope. Sleeping in a cold room or sleeping with the neck in an abnormal position may also trigger a tension headache.

Movement disorder

Imagine if you could not walk normally or get up from a chair, or if parts of your body moved when you did not want them to. If you have a movement disorder, you experience these kinds of impaired movement. Movement disorders are neurological conditions which affect the speed, fluency, quality, and ease of movement. Abnormal fluency or speed of movement (dyskinesia) may involve excessive or involuntary movement (hyperkinesia) or slowed or absent voluntary movement (hypokinesia).

As per doctor’s orders, I did two months of continuous dosing with Ortho Cyclen to avoid starting my period on my wedding day. I stopped taking the pill almost two weeks ago, and my symptoms have gotten worse ever since. The first few days off the pill, I had mild nausea after eating, but it wasn’t really bothersome. Now, I’m suffering from constant nausea accompanied by a dull headache, changes in urination, and hot flashes- I am 22 years old. Sudden temperature change (taking a shower, using car AC) seems to bring the symptoms on strongly. Is this all associated with stopping the pill or something else?

Not everybody is lucky enough to have the perfect teeth or the perfect bite, and for those that don’t it can cause some serious problems in terms of pain and functionality within their mouth. An incorrect bite can lead to your teeth not forming properly and causing more complex problems with your jaw, and one of the problems is TMJ syndrome.

TMJ stands for Temporomandibular Joint. This is where your incorrect bite has caused such a problem upon your jaw; you will feel major discomfort within the joints of jaw. This is because misaligned teeth or an incorrect bite cannot support your jaw muscles correctly when eating or chewing. The muscles will then re-arrange and equip them to cope with this incorrect bite, but will then cause much major problems further down the track.

Some of the symptoms for TMJ are, jaw clicking, grinding of the teeth, migraines, ringing in the ears, neck pain and many more. For most people the symptom of headaches is the most common, and they usually associate this with a medical problem that can be fixed or treated by the doctor, yes they can give you pain killers, but this is not what is needed when you have TMJ this is why it is imperative that you go to see your dentist if any of these symptoms arise.

The actual solution to TMJ is a jaw splint being placed into your mouth, to recover the perfect bite, and once again relax the muscles into the position and shape that they should be in. Although this is the main and most effective treatment, each patient differs and a consultation with your dentist will determine what procedure is the best for you.

Dr Jim Ironside is a dentist in Sydney, NSW providing TMJ jaw joint treatment. For more information please visit http://www.tmj-sleep-dentist-sydney.com.au

Being overweight, drinking a lot of alcohol and not eating right contribute to high blood pressure. The person may not notice anything wrong now but in a few years, this will come in the form of a stroke that could either kill or leave anyone paralyzed.

Studies reveal that this affects more than 50 million Americans with about 30% still unaware what could happen in the future.

There are no symptoms to tell that a person has high blood pressure. Going to the doctor regularly can prevent this but those who don’t will experience things such as headaches, dizziness and nose bleeds which could already mean something is wrong.

Pain in other parts of the body is another warning of imminent danger. Other red flags are excessive sweating, frequent urination, muscle cramps or even palpitations. Should any of these happen to the person, it will be a good idea to visit a physician to find out what is the problem.

Doctors can check on the blood pressure by wrapping a machine on the upper arm, inflating the cuff and listening to the flow of blood using a stethoscope. Normal blood pressure is around 120 over 80. Should this be 140 over 90 or higher, the person has hypertension. It isn’t hard to tell one has high blood pressure given the size of the patient. This is because doctors have a standard given an individual’s gender, height and age so those who are above that are at risk of high blood pressure.

The doctor has to go through the standard operating procedure of asking some personal questions, which includes the individual’s medical history. If this runs in the family and a blood test has confirmed the suspicions of the physician, a solution can be planned before it is too late. The only way to lower the high blood pressure will be for the person to make some lifestyle changes. This usually includes eating healthy, and exercising with the objective of losing those excess pounds so the good cholesterol in the body is balanced against the bad cholesterol.

The person will also have to quit smoking and giving up the daily consumption of alcohol. Headaches lead to dizziness up to the point that some people feel nauseated or want to just faint. This can be fatigue or high blood pressure that is a warning of something bad that could happen if proper action is not taken so change must happen to make the blood pressure normal.

WHEN HEADACHE BECOMES SEVERE

Although headache is quite common to many people, experts say that people should not ignore headaches especially if they become severe. Based on medical findings, the most common symptom of severe headache is related to a migraine attack caused by the dilation of blood vessels on the brain.

Severe headache usually leads to vomiting, distorted vision, nausea, dizziness, and the like. What you can do is to take over-the-counter medication such as oral analgesics like aspirin, ibuprofen, or paracetamol can provide relief and are best if taken as soon as symptoms start to occur.

But when the headache becomes worse, make sure that you visit your health care provider because it can also be an indication of more serious illnesses like meningitis or the inflammation of the meninges or membrane around a person’s brain; sub-arachnoid haemorrhage due a bleeding in the space between the brain and the arachnoid layer of the meninges, stroke, blood pressure, brain tumor, and temporal arteritis due to the inflammation of the arteries in the scalp.

Other causes of severe headache migraine, a condition that occurs and recurs in patterns; sinusitis that is a severe pain experienced behind your cheek bones or above the bridge of your nose usually associated with a blocked nose. steam and painkillers that should relieve the symptoms but if taken in wrong dosages can lead to severe and throbbing pain, fevers that are untreated like flu, tonsillitis, chest infections and the like, neuralgia or due to the irritation of the nerve that produces pain sensation in response to outside activities, and glaucoma or other acute eye problems that most of the time lead to severe frontal headaches and deteriorating eyesight.

Heath care experts agree that using any medication should only be part of a wellness program. They also agree that successful treatment of chronic headaches should be combined approaches of medication and life-style changes like avoiding any listed headache triggers, personal and family counseling, stress management, and relaxation therapies.

In order to treat any type of headache, it is a must that you know what causes it. Before taking in any painkillers or undergoing any headache treatment procedure, make sure that you have consulted with your physician or health care provider first so he/she can give you the appropriate prescription or can give you a referral to appropriate experts if your headache is caused by any other disorder.

Today’s lifestyle is a hectic one. Rushing from place to place and activity to activity is considered normal. But what effect does it have on the mind and body? Spending your day – every day – in a hectic rush can play havoc on you mentally and physically. Stress from overwork and over scheduling has become an epidemic in American society.

When Life Gets To Hectic.

It’s normal to feel overwhelmed from time to time. But, when everyday hassles begin to wear you down – affecting the way you look at yourself and others – it’s time to slow down.

Never taking time out to relax strips your body of the time it needs to rejuvenate and stay healthy. Being constantly on the go isn’t just overwhelming – it’s unhealthy! Everyone reacts to life’s daily stressors differently. What one person can shrug off, another dwells on obsessively. But one thing is clear: too much stress (even stress from doing too many fun things), can play havoc with the nervous and immune systems, and cause a myriad of physical ailments.

Slow Down For More Stress Free Days.

One of the best ways to alleviate the stress in your life is to take time to slow down. Evaluate your schedule and see what’s really keeping you so busy. Are you using activities to deal with feelings of inadequacies? It’s not uncommon to pick up the pace of our lives when we think we’re falling short in one or more areas.

But, little by little all that activity – and stress – will take a toll on you physically, emotionally, and even spiritually. The first sign that overload is stressing you out is chronic tiredness. Short tempers and an overall “I don’t care feeling,” may also be experienced as stress begins to hit a danger point.

Admit that your time and energy is limited, than start cutting activities from your schedule to make room for more relaxation and times of peacefulness. Changing a hectic lifestyle is never easy, but the reward of more stress free days than stress-filled ones is worth the initial struggle.

Allow Yourself Quiet Time Every Day.

Most experts agree, taking just 10 or 15 minutes of quiet alone time ever day can drastically reduce stress levels in most people. Begin each morning with a few “me” moments. You’ll be amazed at the difference it makes in the way you approach the rest of the day.

Stress may seem like it has to be a part of our lives these days – but it doesn’t have to be. Overwork and over scheduling every aspect of our lives hasn’t helped us accomplish more in a day, it’s only managed to make our days more stressful, leading to unhealthy bodies and overwhelmed minds. Take the initiative to slow down and send your stress levels back down.

My sister endured and suffered from frequent severe headaches for many years. It was a part of her life and she had become so used to them that it had become a part of her lifes routine. She ended up taking a lot of medicines to subdue the pain but most of the medicines that she took over the years were able to only reduce the pain to a dull ache. None of the medicines that were tried out obliterated the pain altogether.

The issue took a serious turn when other symptoms started appearing and my sister started to get sudden blackouts. These evolved into situations wherein she lost control of her body and fell, in turn hurting herself. More doctors and more medicines followed but there was no respite. Some doctors tried over-the-counter medicines and the others prescribed sophisticated drugs. But none of them could really understand the real reason behind these headaches.

As the medicines got more sophisticated so did the cost associated with them. My sister ended up spending a sizeable chunk of her income on headache medicines. But we were lucky to find a doctor after a long time that could unearth the mystery and was quite surprised as to why no other physician had thought of checking for mangled sinuses.

We were told that the only treatment fro mangled sinuses was surgery and that is what we went in for. During the operation they realized that the sinuses were extremely mangled and therefore they could not fix the problem completely. Even though the root cause was not able to be corrected fully, all the mutilated sinuses were drained out.

Today my sister still has to spend money on headache medicine but the amount is much lesser since the headaches are less frequent and not as severe. Due to the incomplete procedure, she has to go back for surgery every once in a while but her blackouts and loss of control has stopped.

The real issue now is the side effects of having taken such strong medication over so many years. She has frequent stomach problems which have corroded the inner lining of the stomach. She cannot eat certain foods and has to endure stomach pain in case she is careless about what she is not supposed to eat.

Her case is a reminder to all of you that in case you or someone you know is having severe headaches that are not being diagnosed, it is better to keep trying to find the root cause rather than take severe medicines that will harm your body and make you spend precious bucks.

I get headaches almost four times a week, during the school year but not so often during the summer. Sometimes I wake up with a headache, but it feels different. It doesn’t feel like the other headaches. When I’m washing my hair sometimes, I notice spots on my head that hurt to the touch. They usually go away after a few days. Sometimes it hurts to chew and I’d rather not eat. What could be causing this? I feel like I can’t get anything done because of this.
It doesn’t hurt my teeth or anything in my mouth when I chew, it hurts an area near my temples.

Getting a headache has become all-too-natural for people who live hectic, hurried lives in the city. It is no wonder that every urbanite’s cupboard or medicine cabinet is often stocked with pain relief medications. When the headache comes back, we simply repeat the practice. While it seems harmless to take headache pills for a day or two, overusing it can have unexpected and serious consequences.

Overusing pain relief medications can become a cycle. It can make headaches return as soon as the effect of the medication wears off. Once the pain returns, the tendency is to take more medications until it becomes a worse cycle. Medication overuse headaches are also known as rebound headaches . Rebound headaches are caused by medication taken to relieve regular headaches. In the case of problem headaches, such medication can be a lifesaver. However, the overuse of certain pain relief medications can cause headaches to occur more often and become more severe. People should learn to understand this problem and develop ways to deal with it in order to take control of frequent headaches.

Rebound headaches occur when pain relief medication is taken too frequently to relieve headache pain. It’s not easy to diagnose rebound headaches. Overuse is determined by asking patients if their headaches assumed a new pattern or became more severe after taking medications excessively. More than three times a week is generally considered excessive medication. However, to make a sure diagnosis of rebound headache, the patient must be withdrawn from medication anywhere up to 6 times.

Breaking this cycle means discontinuing the use of the medication. Bear in mind that such withdrawal will actually heighten the headache for the first few weeks. Withdrawal may not be easy. It may take days, weeks, or even months of agonizing withdrawal symptoms, which include headaches and fatigue. Usually, It requires another medication, and sometimes, even hospitalization just to overcome the withdrawal process. The headaches will then gradually recede afterwards. Consult a physician before you revert to the use of medication.

According to Timothy R. Smith, the medical director of the Ryan Headache Center in St. Louis, many experts still don’t know exactly what causes rebound headaches, though the regular overuse of pain relief medication can cause physiological changes. The use of too much pain relievers can lower a person’s pain threshold so that they begin to require more painkillers just to feel “normal” again.

Pain reliever overuse can actually lower the level of serotonin, a hormone that acts as a chemical messenger which transmits nerve signals between nerve cells and causes blood vessels to narrow. Changes in the serotonin levels in the brain can alter the mood as well as pain perception.

The problem with rebound headaches is that they can be difficult to identify. People with rebound headaches usually had chronic headaches to begin with, which is precisely the reason why they started to take medication in the first place. It would be difficult for both the doctor and the patient to notice the shift from a migraine headache to a rebound headache.

Symptoms, however, can vary from person to person. The nausea and sensitivity to light that are typically present with migraine headaches are usually absent in rebound headaches, and the pain can felt in different parts of the head. Patients with rebound headaches will usually complain of daily headaches with pain that escalate to a point where it’s interfering with normal lifestyle, causing anxiety and depression to the individual. According to experts, any pain relief medication is capable of causing rebound headaches when taken frequently and in more than enough dosage. Even over-the-counter medications that contain aspirin, acetaminophen, and ibuprofen can also cause rebound headaches. It is important to note that combining these medications with caffeine can cause a more serious problem.

If you suffer from chronic headache you need to know there are several possible causes and that there are several places for you to get treatment information. First of all, there are two types of chronic headaches: primary and secondary. Primary headaches are those caused by migraines, while secondary headaches have several underlying causes: a disease, tension and stress, smoking, and other health conditions.

Development of pain during a headache

Pain in chronic headaches usually starts on one side of the head. The pain can feel like a stab in the head or it may irradiate. Usually, it is related to muscular pain, such as back pain and neck tension. In the case of migraines, other symptoms are aversion to light and sound, as well as nausea. Sometimes the pain increases if the person lowers the head or moves around.

Chronic headaches vary in frequency and severity, some people may suffer from a half an hour headache while sometimes it may last several days. They can also happen every now and then, but if you suffer from frequent headaches about fifteen days in a month regardless of duration, then you may be diagnosed with chronic headache. If this is the case, seek professional advice immediately.

Some Chronic Headache Causes

Migraine

Depending on the type of headache you suffer from you may have primary or secondary headaches. Primary headaches are caused by migraine, a disease that is suspected to be hereditary, although the exact causes are still unknown.

Tension

Muscular tension also causes headaches. Situations such as stress or excessive work out causes pain in the neck and back area. Another type of tension headache is caused by tmj disorder, more commonly known as teeth clenching. This type of headaches are usually solved with a couple of aspirins or any other over the counter painkiller.

Anxiety, Depression

When a person is facing a life-changing event and is charged with anxiety they may also experience headaches. Sadly, it has become more and more common for children, due to school exams and tests. It’s very common for people who suffer from depression to suffer from chronic headaches as well, though you don’t have to have depression to be diagnosed with chronic disease.

Other causes for Chronic Headache

Chronic headaches can be caused by smoking, certain foods, allergy, sinusitis or other illnesses or conditions. Most of the times, headaches will stop just by removing the cause. To be certain, see your doctor to pinpoint the exact cause of your chronic headaches and where to get treatment information.

The cause of severe headaches is still a mystery though not as unknown as they once were. Herbs such as chamomile and feverfew where once used as headache treatment while today the research into treating headaches is huge with large sums of money being invested. Supposed cures come and go but severe headaches plague so many people with many different symptoms that it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of a severe headache.

The first headache treatment was laudumn, which completely ignored what type of headache; it was the standard treatment for all headaches. Laudumn effectively is able to dull pain but it is also highly addictive. Opiate medication is never used in today’s society to treat headaches since it does not actual solve what is causing your headache. Simply removing the pain and giving you an addiction is not worth the risk and there are many other more effective and less addictive treatments available.

It is thought that severe headaches can be linked to your gender, age, physiology and heredity as those that have parents that suffer from headaches also suffer from headaches. However, it is important to remember that not all treatments will be effective on everyone as everyone has different needs. You may need to try a few different treatments before you find one that works on your headaches.

Causes of Severe Headaches

Hereditary has been found to be a cause of severe headaches and if your parents are subject to severe headaches then it is likely that you will too. This is particularly pertinent for women more so than men and the headaches will most likely appear when you are a child or teenager. Once you start suffering from severe headaches you will need to try some different types of treatment, doctors suggest medication such as Inderal, which decreases the number of headaches you receive. However, Inderal is not effective at treating all headaches.

Mental conditions are also a cause of headaches and some are related to very serious illnesses such as meningitis, hypertension, brain tumor and a stroke. Headaches that are characterized by intense very severe pain that comes on quickly should be treated immediately and needs medical attention fast. Even those that tend to get frequent headaches should take swift action.

Some other common causes for headaches include insomnia, medication side-effects, menopause, specific food items, overconsumption of alcohol, hunger, PMS, being too cold, sun stroke, sinus infection, too loud noise, poor vision, poor posture and muscle tension from stress. These type of headaches may not need medication, as you may be able to make lifestyle changes that eliminate your headaches.

Determining the Cause of Your Headache

Most times you will need to visit a doctor to determine the cause of your severe headaches. Doctors will gather as much information about your life as possible, including your history concerning headaches, if you have suffered from any head trauma, how frequently you get headaches, the severity of your headaches, what makes your headaches worse, what makes them better, a list of current medications, occupation history, any current interpersonal relationships and what type of lifestyle you lead. You may need to undergo a brain scan to eliminate tumors from the possible causes of your headaches, but withy some time your doctor will be able to determine why you are suffering from severe headaches.

About three weeks ago I started getting daily headaches. They are not severe, and they go away with a couple ibuprofen. They are more of a minor nucense than anything. I have been doing some reading trying to find what it could be, but I an not sure. I am slightly nearsighted, but I do not wear anything for it. This has been the case for a while, and my vision does not seem to be any worse recently, nor do I find my self squinting any more than normal. I do have elivated blood pressure, but has stayed fairly stable and does not require medication. Also it is just in the head (left side from the temple back). I do not have any neck or back pain. Also while I do not have any pain in my jaw or mouth, I find when I open my mouth slightly this does help with the pain? Any suggestions.
Don’t think it would be CO. I live in an apartment on the third floor with no gas appliances, and the windows have all been open for the past month. For the sinusitis, it is more towards the back of my head, not as much on the front of my face. I am going to the dentist on Wednesday, so I will see what he says.

You would have pondered over various medical factors for frequent headache attacks to you. But have you considered stress as an underlying cause of headache?

Well, stress is one of the major contributors to various types of headache. And in fact stress originated headache happens to be directly proportional to the level of stress faced by the person. It could be a persistent headache if you constantly remain under stress or it could be an acute headache that ends once you are out of stress. It could even turn out to be a recurring headache if you experience one stress after another, in continuation.

The solution to these types of headache doesn’t lie in taking headache medications. Instead, you should try to find out the actual reason that is compelling you to remain under stress. Once you know about the factors contributing stress to you, you can either modify your lifestyle to curb the stress or you can learn to manage the stress. This is the way in which you would be able to control your headache.

A persistent stress takes the shape of anxiety that weakens you internally and limits the blood supply to nerve cells. It may also be a cause of headache. A workaholic person often remains under stress due to constant pressure of work that may trigger off severe headache. Here, it’s the pressure of work that works as stress. A student could fall prey to headache when examination is impending. Pressure of examination may result in temporary stress causing headache.

A human being undergoes various psychological traumas that compel him/her to live in a state of constant stress that often takes the form of depression. And a depressed folk often claims of headache that becomes a constant companion of the person. Such headaches could only be curbed when the root cause of the problem is addressed properly.

So folks! Before taking headache medication, you must check your headache against prevailing tensions and stresses in your life. Once you are sure that you are free of stress, you can go ahead with pain killers as your headache is a result of certain causes other than stress.

I have had a MRI and CT Scan, both show a cyst in my sinus cavity about the size of a quarter. I have been to ENT doctors and I am currently seeing a neurologist. They say the cyst is harmless and will not cause headaches. I feel preasure where the cyst is located and have headaches often. My neurologist precribed me medication to take daily for the headaches and they are less severe and frequent but still a burden. I have seen two doctors that say that the cyst is harmless, should I get another opinion?
