Question by Sloanfesta: Is there such a thing as chronic tension headache?
I have constant tension headache since I was a teenager. I am 34 now. There’s no serious pain, but it feels like a tight band is wrap around my head. I also feel like there is compression on the surface of my brain. It’s there all the time.

I’ve been to the doctor. Had an MRI. Came out normal. Was given muscle relaxants and other sedatives. Nothing worked.

I try researching this condition and there is no such condition. Even the headache medications are meant for temporary relief when a headache episode comes on. But there doesn’t seem to be a type of tension headache that is constant and chronic like mine.

I remember 9 years ago, for one day the headache subsided (for some strange reason) and for that one day, it felt like heaven.

It seems I have to learn to live with this. Has anyone heard of such a condition?

Best answer:

Answer by Olivia
ok finally somebody who is going through the same thing me and my mother are going through. my mother has had these headaches for about 3 yrs now and mine have been for the past year and a half. well all of my MRI’s came out normal. my nerve tests came out normal. They do not know what is causing either of our migranes and not only that, my mother had surgery back in may for them. they burned her occipital nerve in her head (thats the pain nerve) and that surgery failed. so i do believe that you can get chronic tension headaches. i am a firm believer of them even though the doctors may disagree

In recent times the International Headache Society has added a third primary group of headache(s) to the two primary headache types – migraine and tension-type headache.

This third primary group includes Cluster headache, Chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania, and SUNCT (Short lasting Unilateral Neuralgia form headache attack with Conjunctival injection and Tearing!) and Hemicrania Continua.

Chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania is very similar to Cluster Headache and is often described as the female equivalent of Cluster Headache (Cluster Headache is more frequent in males).

It is interesting to note a report demonstrating that both chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania and Hemicrania Continua (thought to be two different types of headache) respond to the same medication – Indomethacin. (Indomethacin is a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug used to reduce pain)

I have written before that Cluster Headache and Hemicrania Continua respond to blocking or injecting of the greater occipital nerve i.e. a feature of Cervicogenic (neck-related) Headache – just more evidence to support the role of neck disorders in many different headache forms …..

====

YourHeadacheSoultions.co.uk is one voice of the Watson Headache Institute.

The Watson Headache Institute was established to increase the awareness of cervicogenic (neck) disorders in headache and migraine by imparting my (and that of others) clinical experience and knowledge; to present and discuss past and present relevant research and to undertake and support rigorous clinical and scientific research in this specialty.

Appropriate and up-to-date knowledge is self-empowering; I believe that every headache sufferer has the right to know their headache diagnosis as precisely as possible (and what it means), to know the nature of their headache disorder, its outcome and possible types of treatment.

What has yet to gain acceptance is my (and that of others) belief, supported by my unparalleled clinical experience and a significant body of international research, that it is incorrect to consider headache and migraine types as totally different entities and that cervicogenic (neck) disorders can be instrumental in the headache and migraine process.

Although Physiotherapy, Chiropractic and Osteopathy are different disciplines, we are supporters of the idea that headache and migraine sufferers, no matter what their diagnoses, can be helped to live their lives more effectively through appropriate neck treatment. However, because treatment of the neck does not fit the medical model of headache and migraine, the model has demonstrated little interest in exploring this as an option. It is essential that all factors, which have the potential to sensitise the brainstem, be investigated equally. Currently this is not the situation – the neck is largely disregarded.

So, whilst YourHeadacheSolutions.com is also about Education, it is also a directory for headache and migraine sufferers to source practitioners who have a particular interest in and are skilled in examination of the neck as a source of your headache or migraine – to create a more comprehensive approach and provide an alternative, medication-free treatment.

ver the past 15 years I have developed a series of techniques, which, by way of temporary reproduction of headache and easing of the headache as a technique is sustained, confirm that a neck disorder is the cause of or a significant factor in the mechanism of the headache or migraine – this a key diagnostic criterion for cervicogenic or neck involvement in headache according to the International Headache Society – importantly for the disorder to be related to the headache or migraine process the headache has to ease as the technique is maintained. If both reproduction and lessening are not possible then the neck may not be the source of the headache or migraine. Furthermore my experience has shown that if the techniques are performed in a specific manner it is possible to determine which spinal segment is the cause of or contributing significantly to headache and migraine. Having determined which spinal segment (or segments — there may be more than one) is involved then this significantly increases the chance of the treatment being successful because treatment can be directed at specific, relevant spinal segments.

The application of these techniques in Europe, United Kingdom and Australia has become known as the ‘Watson Headache Approach’ and forms the basis of courses I present for physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Norway and Spain — refer www.headacheeducation.com

The Watson Headache Institute was established to increase the awareness of cervicogenic (neck) disorders in headache and migraine by:

imparting my (and that of others) clinical experience and knowledge

and,

undertaking and supporting rigorous clinical and scientific research in this specialty.

They are so bad that not even Excedrin Migraine will help. They intensify when I lay on my stomach, blood rushes and they throb. Sometimes I can give myself relief by pressing firmly on my head or keeping my neck in a certain position. Just wondering if anyone knows what might be causing them?

Many people doubt the legitimacy of chronic fatigue syndrome. Some people believe that the illness is just a figment of imagination. The reason for the disbelief in the disease is mostly due to the fact that there are no lab tests or in patient examinations that can prove that the person is actually suffering from this illness.

Usually if a person goes to the doctor and he/she is suffering from CFS, many other possibilities have to be eliminated prior to reaching a conclusion. Even after the conclusion has been reached, the results are never one hundred percent positive that the patient is in fact suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. This is perhaps why, from the one million Americans who suffer from the disease, only twenty percent have actually been diagnosed with it. So what exactly is CFS? This particular ailment is actually a type of severe fatigue that can last six months or longer. The fatigue is so severe that it can reduce someone’s ability to accomplish daily tasks. People are usually too tired to work and participate in any type of activity. For those people who remain working, their job usually suffers as their productivity lessens.

Some other symptoms of the illness include: pain in muscles, pain in joints, problems with memory, problems with concentration, headaches, unsatisfying sleep, sore throat, and sensitive lymph nodes. As of right now, there is no cure for chronic fatigue syndrome. The only way that doctors are able to help people who are suffering from CFS is by relieving their symptoms. For instance, a doctor may prescribe someone medicine to aid in reducing pain in the muscles or joins. Taking these little steps helps people regain their ability to perform daily tasks. People suffering from this illness can truly vouch for the legitimacy of it.

There are many people who suffer from the symptoms of chronic fatigue fibromyalgia but because it is not a well known disease many of these people do not realize that they have it. Most people do not learn about this disorder until they make an appointment with their doctor to find relief from the symptoms.

When the symptoms of chronic fatigue fibromyalgia first appear they are usually little more than a minor annoyance that may come and go for several years before they intensify. What starts out as minor headaches, tingly or numb body parts, body aches and general fatigue can become more severe over time and lead to joint pain, long periods of fatigue and lethargy, and light headedness. When these symptoms become unbearable those who suffer them are forced to miss work, family events and seek relief with frequent visits to their doctor.

There is no known cure for this disease but for those who suffer from it there are a variety of treatments that can bring relief from the symptoms. Relocating to a warmer climate or finding a job that does not require lots of energy are two ways in which one can reduce the symptoms of this condition.

Reducing stress in daily life is one of the best ways to alleviate the symptoms as well. Because stress is such a factor in aggravating the symptoms of this disorder learning how to take it easy, relax and conserve energy is very important when it comes to gaining relief. Another known way to deal with the symptoms of chronic fatigue fibromyalgia is eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

This disorder does affect women more then men but anyone at any age can be affected by it. Anyone who experiences the symptoms of this condition should seek a doctor’s treatment because many of the symptoms can appear to be caused by other illnesses. A doctor can perform a number of tests to rule out other diseases and narrow down the diagnosis to chronic fatigue fibromyalgia.

Medical science is unsure of the origins of this disease but there are two theories as to its causes. The first is that it a genetic disease that is passed down through families while the second theory points more towards the stress of daily life in the modern world as a contributing factor.

The one factor that remains the same is the idea that anyone who suffers from chronic fatigue fibromyalgia will have to make lifestyle changes if they are to effectively deal with the disorder.

The special thing about headaches is that by outward appearance, you may not appear to suffer from any disease. Only the possessor of this disease knows what it is like to have it! He feels like banging his head somewhere, but to that extent he possesses awareness that he should not damage his skull or your skull when you profusely tender a basket full of advice as to how he should face this calamity, narrating how you yourself faced similar situations in the not-too-distant past!

But if you have a chronic headache, your patience will be tested on a long-term basis! Because this type of headache comes with lots of other irritants, each one of them capable of subduing the cheerfulness that is part of your personality just before its arrival!

Chronic headache arrives with intense pain, some may call it a burning sensation! Changes in skin temperature, color and texture will confuse you! Joint stiffness and swelling also do their job of damaging your personality and cheerful disposition. If you are a man with a “don’t care” attitude who thinks self-help is the best for your headache relief, do this at your peril! If people like you are in majority, majority of the medical practitioners will be unemployed! Do seek professional advice and get yourself examined by an expert!

Chronic headache is a tension-type headache. You know it, and you are suffering from it for the last several months and you are also not much hopeful about the future, when you will be free from it. You are in a state of total confusion; you have tried various types of over the counter medicines, listened to various opinions, without any tangible result! The intensity of the headache is but persisting and increasing!

You have listened to various friends and well-wishers, your file containing investigation reports and prescription papers by the various medical practitioners and specialists is becoming bulky and disgusting to look at, and your own expertise has failed you, but is it fair to still ignore your grandma?

She has saved many “heads” in the past, and will she not do it for you? Note down, what she has to say, even though she had never been to Kashmir (the apple growing State of India): Apples are highly beneficial in the treatment of all types of headache. A ripe apple, after removing the upper rind and the inner hard portion should be taken with a little salt every morning on empty stomach in such cases. This should be continued for about a week. It will yield good results even in cases of disgusting chronic headache.

If not after a week, after a fortnight, do meet this grandma and cheer her, oh, chronic headache-less man!

Many people believe they suffer from chronic sinus headaches because they frequently suffer from sever pain around their sinus areas in their face and head. It is possible to have chronic sinus headaches however the condition is rare and can only be diagnosed by a doctor.

A chronic sinus headache would not be as painful as the more common acute sinus headache which occurs during a sinus infection. When sinuses are clogged bacteria can grow in the nasal passages creating an infection of the nasal passages commonly known as a sinus infection.

The headache associated with a sinus infection is quite severe and common treatments such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen will not help the pain. Chronic sinus headaches and acute sinus headaches will often require antibiotics to kill the infection as well as medications to alleviate the sinus pain.

Migraine Headaches

Many self-diagnosed chronic sinus headache suffers could actually be suffering from migraine headaches, the pain occurs in much the same places in the face and head. However, the cause of migraine headaches are varied and rarely are related to an illness.

Some people who believe they suffer from chronic sinus headaches believe the change in weather or pollution such as chemical smells or smoke are the cause of their sinus headache. In fact, these are triggers of migraine headaches.

If an allergy does exist it would not cause a sinus headache, because with allergies such as pollen, dander, or dust which cause nasal drainage. The fact that there is drainage omits the possibility of chronic sinus headache occurrences.

Moreover, many people take over the counter medications for sinus headaches such as sinus relief medicines, allergy medicines, or other pain relieving medication. However, these medications often will have no effect on the headache.

Tension Headaches

Tension headaches are also often thought to be pain masquerading as chronic sinus headaches. Tension headaches can cause pain in the temples and across the forehead. Because of this many people do mistake tension headaches for chronic sinus headaches.

Many tension headaches are accompanied by pain in the neck and shoulders. Sometimes the pain is right at the base of the head. Because there are also glands here, this can confuse many people into believing that they are suffering from chronic sinus headaches instead of tension headaches.

A doctor can perform tests to determine if a person has chronic sinus headaches. If someone believes they have chronic sinus headaches they should immediately contact a physician as medial treatment is necessary to relieve the pain and kill the infection.

Chronic fatigue syndrome, more commonly known as CFS, is a health condition without a known cause. CFS is a disease causes patients to become easily fatigued to the point that they cannot perform simple and normal daily activities. The major symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome is that the fatigue lasts for more than six months.

This condition affects more women than men. Chronic fatigue syndrome is likely to occur in adults aged 40 to 50, but can also occur in children and young adults. Diagnosis of this condition is a complicated process because it does not provide any clear cause or physical signs that could identify this disease. It also affects people slowly, which could sometimes last for years.

Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome experience months or years of fatigue. Other symptoms may include extreme tiredness for more than one day, sore throat, headaches and tender areas in armpits or neck, temporary memory loss, lack of concentration, unexplained muscle soreness, trouble sleeping and pain that moves from one joint to the next without inflammation. These symptoms usually occur for more than six months if left untreated.

Recovery From Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

While there are no known cure for this condition, doctors treat the disease by relieving symptoms and improving the daily functions of the patients. Doctors usually combine medication and non-drug therapies to help patients with CFS.

However, no one therapy could treat all CFS patients. For this reason, doctors may recommend different therapies and management options based on personal health history, lifestyle and symptoms.

Lifestyle change is an important part of reducing the symptoms of CFS. Patients are advised to prevent over-exertion, reduce emotional and physical stress, perform gentle stretching exercises and drink nutritional supplements. However, other medications can be prescribed to treat difficulty of sleeping, severe muscle pains and other symptoms that a patient specifically experience.

Physical therapies are sometimes a part of CFS treatments. However, since some physical activities could aggravate the symptoms, strict supervision of these therapies are necessary. This is important because patients may experience over-activity or de-conditioning.

CFS may affect each patient differently. While some patients remain unable to perform daily tasks, others can resume normal activities even if they still experience some of the symptoms. Be aware that full recovery from this condition is very rare, while most patients will have an improvement of their condition after drug and non-drug therapies as well as several check-ups.

Chronic fatigue, or also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis is a special type of illness that is characterized by severe exhaustion of the patient. The symptoms of the disease is almost similar to ordinary exhaustion other than it does not easily fade out even after taking enough rest.

Chronic fatigue is a post-viral syndrome that affects people that just came from viral diseases like colds, cough and flu. Studies indicate that chronic fatigue occurs more often in women than in men. Researchers note that women are more prone to the disease because of the hormonal imbalances that often persist in them.

The illness lasts for at least 24 hours, but those hours can be really exhausting to the patient. The disease should also not be taken for granted because it can be totally severe and life-threatening if not dealth with appropriately.

Symptoms

Among the symptoms of chronic fatigue, exhaustion is the most prevalent and obvious. However, that fatigue can almost always be mistaken for ordinary wearing out of the body from a tiring activity or from a tough disease.

Other symptoms of the chronic fatigue includes sore throat, unexplained soreness of the muscles, a different and too painful headache, sleep disturbance and inability to concentrate.

The patient will also feel very extreme exhaustion that may arise from a regular exercise and pain, which moves between joints without physical redness or swelling. Lymph nodes also enlarge especially at the areas of the armpits and the neck.

An international chronic fatigue syndrome study group also identified the following symptoms as related to chronic fatigue: weight loss, nausea, earache, chest pain, abdominal pain, chronic cough, dizziness, jaw pain, morning stiffness, dry eyes and mouth, bloating, night sweats, depression, panic attacks, anxiety and tingling sensations.

Once any of the symptoms occur, it is advised that the patient be urgently rushed to the hospital for treatment. The patient will also feel uneasy, so seeking immediate medication would truly be required.

Cure For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

There are also a number of possible cures and treatment for chronic fatigue. Currently, there are already medications out in the market that are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

However, doctors usually prescribe the following drugs when a patient is diagnosed with chronic fatigue: expectorants, corticoids, anti-inflammatories, CNS depressants, anti-fungals, anti-virals, immunoglobulins, anti+histamines and anti-depressants.

Of course, alternative medicine would not run out of its own medications. Chronic fatigue patients can also turn to aquatic therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic, tai-chi, yoga and massage. Alternative medicine experts also recommend special stretching activities and nutritional supplements to help patients overcome the disease.

Of course, on top of all these recommended medications, which some strictly require prescriptions by doctors, the patient suffering from chronic fatigue must take sufficient and quality time of rest. The usual coping up with the disease mechanism within the body must also be triggered, to help the patient overcome chronic fatigue easily.

Prevention

If there is a disease and a cure, of course, not far behind is the topic about prevention.

Generally, experts believe that chronic fatigue can be prevented by getting adequate rest, getting light to moderate exercise daily, reduction of emotional and physical stress and having a manageable and regularized daily routine.

Proper diet and avoidance of viral infections would also surely help prevent the onset of the disease. As they say, an ounce of prevention is far more that pounds of cure.

Researching For A Cure

People have different responses to different cure for diseases. As usual, some medications would be easily absorbed and utilized by the body, whereas some treatments have adverse reactions.

That is why it is important that you consult your doctor before taking in any medication to cure chronic fatigue. It is because your health may be jeopardized if you take in drugs that may trigger allergic reactions from your system.

The Internet surely offers several potent drugs for the disease. However, not all that is sold online is safe, so stick to the tried and tested medications and make sure the medication you will take is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration.

Finding a cure for chronic fatigue would not be hard. However, for your own safety, consult your physician to make sure each of the medications you take would not compromise your overall health and safety.

Even though chronic fatigue syndrome is a poorly understood and lacks any definitive treatment it is emerging as one of the most dominant health disorders of our time. Chronic fatigue is reported by 20 percent of all patients seeking medical care and is associated with many other well known medical conditions. The first of many signs of chronic fatigue is intractable fatigue lasting more than 6 months and not reversed by sleep.

Fatigue is a slowly progressing, largely invisible symptom and like pain, is a warning sign that something is affecting the body. It can be a symptom of many illnesses such as infections or psychological disorders. In many cases the signs of chronic fatigue are worsened with physical or mental activity.

Many people liken chronic fatigue syndrome to a flu-like condition that drains their energy for weeks and months on end. It can also be exacerbated by an actual viral illness or a dysfunction of the immune system. Women are diagnosed with chronic fatigue 2 to 4 times as often as men but it is unclear whether it affects women more frequently or if they just report it to their doctors more then men do.

This is a complicated disorder characterized as stated earlier by extreme fatigue that does not improve with rest and worsens with physical or mental activity. Confusion, poor concentration, and forgetfulness are among some of the signs of chronic fatigue syndrome. In addition people previously healthy and full of energy may experience a variety of symptoms, including extreme fatigue, weakness and headaches as well as difficulty concentrating and painful joints, muscles and lymph nodes. People with chronic fatigue syndrome exhibit signs and symptoms similar to those of most common viral infections.

Symptoms can also include weakness that interferes with daily living by up to 50% for some people. Unlike flu (influenza) symptoms, which usually subside in a few days or weeks, the signs and symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome can last for months or years, causing a marked restriction in normal daily activities.

Currently there is no specific diagnostic test for chronic fatigue nor is there a proven treatment regimen. Treatment is aimed at relieving the more obvious symptoms and restoring the patient to some level of pre-existing function and well-being. These treatments have been palliative at best and are based on trial and error application of what seems to work and what doesn’t. Doctor’s aim to relieve the symptoms and restore the patient to some level of pre-existing function and well-being.

Chronic fatigue is a severe, debilitating disorder which can affect anyone. If you or someone you know is exhibiting the signs of chronic fatigue syndrome then a visit to the doctor is the first place to start to rule out other illnesses that may be contributing to the symptoms that are experienced.

When you are subjected to a migraine headache you will have two choices of therapy, pain medicine or natural therapy techniques. A large number of natural treatment techniques exist that aren’t only safe, but effective too. In fact, they can frequently be more useful than painkillers and without the danger of serious unwanted effects.

Biofeedback therapy

Biofeedback training has shown positive outcomes in terms of stopping migraine headache pain. It is not really deemed a therapy, but a guidance course that will teach a person how to control certain body functions that are typically controlled unconsciously by the human body. Learning biofeedback training can permit an individual to control body functions like blood pressure and body temperature. As soon as biofeedback therapy is learned it can be utilized to decrease or eliminate migraine headaches.

Habitual Exercise

Regular exercise can also be an enormous help for migraine sufferers. This includes both aerobic exercise such as jogging and weightlifting workouts that can build and preserve muscle tone. Nonetheless, bear in mind that once a migraine attack occurs, strenuous exercise or other similar activities can increase the symptoms. Do not exercise when you are suffering with a migraine headache.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic manipulations have been helping migraine headache sufferers for more than one hundred years. Studies have persistently revealed chiropractic manipulations to be extremely useful for relieving migraine headaches. Some research has shown helpful results in excess of 80% of sufferers. Moreover, chiropractic manipulations are very safe. You’ll often hear people declare that chiropractic treatment is harmful, but severe problems are extraordinarily uncommon as a result of chiropractic care. You will have a better chance of getting struck by lighting than suffering a severe problem due to a chiropractic manipulation.

Decrease Your Salt Consumption

If you are a migraine sufferer that likes to salt their cuisine you may want to get out of the addiction. Lots of folks add salt to almost everything they consume. It can add a whole lot of flavor to your meals, but it can also trigger migraine headache pain.

Drink Lots of Water Every Day

Dehydration can happen fast in a migraine sufferer. Many times it only requires three hours with no water to bring on a headache. Migraineurs should generally eat smaller meals more often as an alternative to larger meals infrequently. Plus, they need to be consuming enough water every day. Lots of beverages like soft drinks and high energy drinks can in reality drain your body of water. Try drinking water and avoid other types of drinks.

These 5 natural treatment methods are all acknowledged as being safe and are very successful in relieving migraine headaches in many individuals There are many other good natural treatment strategies that may additionally bring helpful results, some of which may give you relief.

Chronic headache, or chronic daily headache (CDH) are defined as headaches that occur more than 15 days per month for longer than 3 months. Chronic daily headache is not a diagnosis but a category that contains many disorders representing primary and secondary headaches. The primary headaches include migraine, tension-type, and cluster headaches. The prolonged or very frequent headaches are usually known as the chronic headaches. Secondary headaches are caused by medical conditions, such as infection or increased pressure in the skull due to a growing tumor. These account for a very small percentage of all headaches.

Many treatments and technique are available, both to relieve and prevent these headaches pain. All these treatments depending on which type of headache you have. The medications known to play a role in treatment headches such as analgesics, Beta blockers, antidepressant and Injections of anesthetics. These medications do not cure headaches completely and just give the timely relief. There are numerous side effects with these medications and if you use these medications in a frequent manner and for a longer period of time, they will lose their necessary effect. To be on the safe side, there are many natural alternatives for pain relief which are quite effective:

1. Stress management and relaxation techniques: Meditation, Hypnosis, Biofeedback, and Yoga. Some people get relief by reaching a state of near hypnosis using meditation or what some people call self-hypnosis. Biofeedback can be learned in a few easy sessions. Practitioners of Yoga know a few positions that can relieve a variety of headaches.

2. Drinking plenty of water. Headaches happen to be one of the best indicators of dehydration. You need to drink at least eight glasses of water to help keep you in optimum health and lessen the onset of some headaches.

3. Massage. Firm massage of the forehead, neck, and scalp has been reported to help relieve a headache. Massage is a great weapon to relieve stress.

4. Acupuncture. Acupuncture is based in part on the premise that blood and energy termed Qi (pronounced chee) circulate in a cyclical fashion through these meridians. This energy flow is required for good health. may relieve some of the symptoms of your tension-type headache by helping to reduce tension in your muscles.

5. Apply an ice pack. Wrap an ice pack in a dry towel, and apply the cloth to your forehead in 10- to 20-minute intervals. Cold therapy reduces inflammation and relaxes tense muscles.

6. Diet

Changing your diet is probably the easiest way to avoid and remedy headaches, as it only takes simple changes and is primarily in your control.

-Avoid Caffeine. Caffeine is a widely used substance that comes not only in coffee, but also tea, chocolate, certain medications and soft drinks. When used regularly, a caffeine dependency can form and withdrawing the substance may lead to severe headaches.

- Avoid tyramine. Tyramine is a substance in certain foods that appears after the breakdown of protein. Sensitivity to tyramine may cause acute headaches. Foods high in tyramine include aged cheese, Vinegar (relish, salad dressings, sauces, catsup), Organ meats (kidney liver), alcoholic beverages (especially red wine), Sour Cream, Soy sauce, Yogurt, some processed meats, Yeast extracts pickles, onions, olives, fava beans, raisins, nuts, avocados, canned soups.

- Avoid Food preservatives or additives. Food preservatives (or additives) contained in certain foods can trigger headaches. Many foods contain certain additives like artificial flavors, colors, or sweeteners, which may be the culprits behind nasty headaches. These additives may change the amount of blood flow to the brain and trigger a headache. Certain food additives, including Monosodium Glutamatem, aspartame, saccharin, nuts, hot dogs, ham, sausage, bacon, luncheon meats, chinese foods, soups, dressings, mayonnaise, frozen foods or potato chips.

- Reduce your salt intake. too much salt can and does cause headaches.

7. Try some Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is an ancient healing art that has been used to treat and cure stress headaches for ages. It works well whether you are using massage oils or inhaling the different herbal oils. Using aromatherapy to treat headaches is nothing new as this method of healing has been around for centuries.

8. Reflexology. Reflexology is touted as a treatment for all sorts of ailments, and clinical studies seem to confirm its effectiveness for some, including headaches. Use the thumb and index finger of one hand to apply pressure to the fleshy area between the thumb and index finger of the other hand. Hold this for a minute or two. This doesn’t seem to work for everyone, but for some people, this provides immediate relief. The relief may be temporary, or you may get rid of your headache entirely.

9. Remove yourself from the trigger. If you think you know what triggered your headache or, alternately, what’s aggravating it, avoid that thing. If it’s stress, for example, remove yourself from the stressful situation and try to relax. If the sun’s bright light is aggravating your headache, go inside or put on some sunglasses. You can’t get away from some triggers, such as a food that you already ate, but you can avoid them in the future.

10. Consult your doctor or chiropractor if you get frequent, long-lasting, or very severe headaches. Most tension headaches cause mild to moderate pain and go away on their own fairly quickly, even in the absence of treatment. These are known as episodic tension headaches. Chronic tension headaches, on the other hand, can last for days, weeks, or even longer. These often require special treatment and, sometimes, prescription medications. Other types of headaches, including migraine headaches and cluster headaches, can also be longer-lasting and can cause excruciating pain.

Finally, it’s important to note that frequent or severe headaches may be symptoms of another illness or disorder. If you experience frequent or severe headaches, or headaches that are accompanied by other symptoms, such as nausea, vision problems, or dizziness, you might want to make an appointment with your doctor to get an accurate diagnosis and effective treatments. Headaches can be a sign of many different things, always consult your health care provider for any health care concerns you may have.

When people are unable to think properly and look straight, chances are the person has a headache. Cases such as these may be mild to severe which is why doctors say, ” its only in the head.”

There are two kinds of headaches. The first is called the tension headache, which may happen for a few minutes to a few hours. It usually goes away by drinking some water or taking a break from whatever the person is doing.

Those who are experiencing this for more than 15 days in a given month has something worse which is the second kind called a chronic headache. Research shows that there are very few people that have this problem. This often occurs to women than men perhaps because of hormones and other chemicals in the body.

Scientists do not yet know the real cause of a chronic headache. Some attribute it to stress or not getting enough nutrients in the diet. Believe it not, the type of medicine being taken may also be the cause of this problem.

Should this occur for more than two days, it is best to consult with a doctor immediately for proper treatment. Doctors will not be able to tell that the patient has a chronic headache. This can only be done after answering some questions such as how long the headaches have happened including one’s medical history.

To narrow down the problem, a blood test and a neurological exam will be done on the patient. Two of these tests are the CT scan and the electroencephalogram or EEG. If the brain activity is normal and there are no problems inside like a broken blood vessel or tumor, only then can doctors say it is a chronic headache.

There are various drugs in the market that are there to help treat chronic headaches. Unfortunately, there have been instances where it just got worse after taking it. Should this happen, the patient should stop taking the medicine and try something different.

Some researchers have pointed out the getting help from a chiropractor can make chronic headaches go away. This is because the techniques used by these professionals are not only to relieve any pain or tension in the spine because this comforts the whole body.

Another eastern technique that is used to treat chronic headaches is acupuncture. This works by applying needles to sensitive spots to relieve tension in the body.

Chronic fatigue syndrome, or CFS, was first identified in the 1980s, but the cause is very hard to determine. It encompasses many different symptoms and discomforts. It is defined as significant fatigue for a period of more than six months, not related to exertion or lack of sleep, and associated with other symptoms. The patient feels fluey, no energy, frequent headaches, sore joints and lymph nodes, and has trouble concentrating.

The most common CFS symptoms are:

Fatigue

Constant deep, incapacitating mental and physical exhaustion, which does not disappear through rest. Rather than alleviate this long term fatigue, exercise of any kind only aggravates it.

Pain

CFS pain is generally in the muscles, joints (without swelling or inflammation), and lymph nodes. Common complaints are also irritable bowel syndrome, chest pains and sore throats.

Cognition

Patients may suffer from forgetfulness and confusion.Their thinking, focusing and verbal skills are often affected as well.

Hypersensitivity

Most CFS sufferers are very sensitive to light, sound, chemicals and food. The sensitivity to foods, odors, substances, and medications can make treatment difficult. Patients who already had a history of allergies and conditions, like asthma, now tend to suffer more acutely from those symptoms. Oversensitivity of all the senses contributes to abnormal tiredness, migraines, and even seizures.

Body Temperature Imbalance

CFS patients have trouble stabilizing their body temperature, constantly fluctuating between too hot and too cold. They often complain of fever-like symptoms. This may be due to the affected hypothalamus, the organ controlling body temperature.

Sleep Issues

No amount of sleep and rest can make these sufferers feel better. Most have trouble getting a good night’s sleep. Even with regular sleep schedule and after prolonged deep sleep, they wake up exhausted.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is very hard to diagnose because of the many different symptoms. Every patient is different and presents varying combinations and severity of the main symptoms above. Furthermore, the symptoms may come and go seemingly without reason or treatment.

It is a very debilitating ailment, greatly affecting the persons’ quality of life. The un- restful sleep, and any combination of symptoms can further contribute to a host of other problems, such as loss of concentration, dizziness, depression, mood disorders, and short-term memory impairment.

To further add to the difficulty of diagnosis are other conditions like fibromyalgia, which has most of the same symptoms. Pre-existing conditions like chronic viral illnesses, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, hepatitis, sleep disorder, adverse effects of medication, severe obesity, and psychiatric illnesses all impact on the diagnosis and treatment.

There is no cure for chronic fatigue syndrome; only treatments for the symptoms, such as headaches and sore throats. The treatment by conventional and alternative means both aim at the restoration of normal sleep and elimination of pain.

Treatments vary from antidepressants, steroids, immune system medications, anti-histamines to homeopathic treatments like evening primrose oil, diet therapy,

cognitive behavioral therapy, and gentle exercise programs. Although lack of a definite treatment for CFS leaves a lot to be desired, the above treatments, whether all or a combination, can prove fairly effective.

If depression is the main problem, treatment of that can significantly improve the quality of sleep, thus affording some relief of the persistent fatigue. Psychologists can identify personal factors, such as personality styles, unhelpful thought patterns, and attitudes. They can also help patients identify overwork-collapse patterns and train them to reduce the physical, psychological and emotional stressors.

Diet is of utmost importance. It is important to include essential fatty acids in your daily food intake as well as powerful antioxidants to restore the immune system. Both have shown significant improvement in chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms.

Heavy metal may also be a cause of CFS. In the case of mercury poisoning, dental fillings would need to be removed.

NB

This information about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has been gleaned from various sources. It may not be fully accurate and is intended only as information. Only your doctor can make the right diagnosis and prescribe treatment right for you!

Just like other diseases, chronic fatigue has its own share of symptoms. The primary telltale sign of chronic fatigue is prolonged feeling of tiredness, which could last for as long as six months. This is what 25% of the people who have chronic fatigue always complain of.

Fatigue that is persistent, relapsing or debilitating; does not improve with bed rest; and reduces or impairs average daily activity level by more than 50 percent for a period of at least 6 months. Patient has no previous history of fatigue.

2. The patient has 4 or more of the following symptoms, which must have persisted or recurred during 6 or more consecutive months and predated the fatigue:

Short-term memory or concentration problems

Sore throat

Multi-joint pain without joint swelling or redness

Muscle pain

Headaches of a new type, pattern or severity

Non-refreshing sleep

Post-exertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours

In addition, a number of minor symptoms may also appear:

Poor sleep

Achiness

Brain fog

Increased thirst

Bowel disorders

Recurrent infections

Exhausting after minimal exertion

The type of chronic fatigue symptoms that patients feel are very different from what one feels after a stressful day at work. It is a severe, weakening fatigue that is not relieved by any kind of rest or sleep. And most physical and mental activities could make the condition even worse.

Aside from tiredness, the chronic fatigue symptoms list includes cognitive dysfunction and postexertional malaise. Cognitive dysfunction is characterized by memory loss and concentration problems. Postexertional malaise, on the other hand, is extreme exhaustion after even a simple mental or physical exercise.

People suffering from chronic fatigue symptoms will also experience a round of less than refreshing sleep. They may be able to sleep the normal hours all right, but when they wake up, they won’t feel revitalized at all. Sleeping then is reduced to a routine that doesn’t have any physical benefits to a person at all.

Joint pains and persistent muscle pains are also going to surface. Joint pains usually occur without swelling or redness. But just the same, its presence can be alarming that an appointment with a doctor maybe necessary.

And along with all of these, multiple episodes of headaches will also be experienced. The lymph nodes and the cervix area may also become tender. Sore throat would arise from time to time as well.

There are also some chronic fatigue symptoms that are showing on several individuals alone. The symptoms may not be apparent to other patients, but they appear quite too commonly that researchers of the disease established a link between them. These chronic fatigue symptoms include irritable bowel movement, brain fog, chills, night sweats, chest pain, chronic cough, jaw pain, and allergies.

Taking over the counter drugs (OTC) is usually the first step in trying to get rid of those little nagging aches and pains we all suffer from during the normal course of our daily life.

Most of the time these non-prescribed drugs work just fine. However, it’s when the little aches and pains become a persistent chronic pain that we run into problems.

That nagging, chronic backache can become a debilitating problem. Those Irritating little headaches that keep you in a constant bad mood can take on monumental proportion and make your life an absolute hell.

The search for headache pain relief can be all consuming. This is when the cheap OTC drugs you buy at the discount stores become ineffective.

Hopefully, you are smart enough to realize that doubling up the dosage is not a good idea. Your first step should be is to consult your doctor if the OTC drugs are not doing the job. A chronic headache or chronic back pain is something you can’t ignore.

You should not delay about seeing your doctor if your problem is persistent headaches. Ask about getting an MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) procedure done on your head.

It’s painless and a very good way to spot a growing cerebral aneurysm forming in your head. This is a fairly new technique for spotting this sort of problem and is gaining popularity with the doctors.

The MRI is also a great tool being used to spot a ruptured disc in the spine. The MRI is a non-invasive way to look inside of you to see what is going on. If you have any luck at all your test will come back negative.

Usually, the first thing a doctor will try, after passing the MRI test, is physical therapy, and/or some mild prescription drugs. The cause of your chronic pain can be anything from a pinched nerve to a strained muscle. The physical therapy, while expensive, may just be the cure you’re looking for to get rid of your problems.

However, you may have to start taking a regime of prescribed drugs if the workouts do not take care of your never-ending pain. This is where the dangers start to pile up.

Every prescribed drug has an adverse drug reaction. These reactions can affect your liver, stomach, kidneys, and even your heart. You must discuss the possibilities of this problem with your doctor.

An alternative to the prescribed drugs is herbal, or natural pain relief medications. These are pills, ointments, and spray-ons that are manufactured from plants and other natural elements of the earth.

Although new, they don’t have the adverse side effects as conventional medicine and appear to be moving up into first place as the preferred way to get pain relief.

People with chronic headaches often have pain 25 or more days a month, pain that is far more debilitating than scientists previously thought, according to an Ohio University researcher who is leading a study of 245 chronic headache sufferers.

Results from the study found that 66 percent of participants have headaches nearly every day.

The research was presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Headache in San Francisco.

Weekly records kept by patients indicate that more than 70 percent record disrupted sleep, fatigue and headache-related anxiety or stress. Forty-four percent say their headaches affect their performance at work or school and 72 percent said the pain caused them to miss work or school an average of 3.5 days in the last six months.

Unfortunately, chronic headache pain disrupts the lives of millions of people worldwide. Thankfully, there are ways to treat the debilitating discomfort of tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches. But, how do you know which kind of chronic headache pain treatment is right for you?

Chronic headache pain treatment includes medication or natural remedies. The first step is to visit your doctor to find out what kind of headache you have, and if it is chronic, then, a chronic headache pain treatment will be suggested by your doctor. Also, consider getting a second opinion just to be on the correct side of the diagnosis.

To be considered for chronic headache pain treatment, a person must have acute pain on a regular basis that is not cured by over-the-counter drugs, such as such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil).

Medication

Doctor-prescribed, brand-name medications are used frequently as chronic headache pain treatment methods. Medications, such as Imetrex or Maxalt, are typically used to treat chronic headache pain associated with migraines and cluster headaches. And, in very severe cases, strong narcotic painkillers, like Oxycodon and Vicodine, may be used as part of a chronic headache pain treatment plan. However, many doctors agree that a chronic headache pain treatment plan cannot consist of medication alone.

Seddon Savage, M.D., a pain specialist from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire says, “Treatment for chronic pain is about much more than medication. It can also involve stress relief and relaxation, physical therapy, improved sleep and nutrition habits, and exercise.”

Alternative Methods

Medication is not for everybody. If you would rather find a more natural way to treat your pain, there are many alternative methods of chronic headache pain treatment.

• Acupuncture. Traditional Chinese acupuncture therapy uses small needles that are inserted into specific points of the body. Many people swear by this chronic headache pain treatment

• Acupressure. If acupuncture needles frighten you, you may want to try acupressure. Instead of needles, acupressure relies on fingertips to stimulate channels of energy in the body.

• Fragrant Oils. Some oils have been proven to be great chronic headache pain treatments. Try using peppermint oil, chamomile, rosemary, or lavender to alleviate your pain. Keep in mind, a little oil goes a long way.

Since pain varies from person to person, Chronic Headache pain treatment is individualized. While medication may work perfectly for some, acupuncture or acupressure works better for others.

For more information about chronic headache pain treatment, check out the National Headache Foundation’s website. This site may lead you in the right direction in order to find a chronic headache pain treatment plan that works best for you.

I am just wondering – I have had almost daily headaches for a long time – around 5 years. I have had a full workup with MRI, CT, all normal. I have tried Neurontin, Topamax, Tramadol, antidepressants (which I still take), acupuncture, chiropractic, and of course Tylenol, ibuprofen, Aleve, which don’t work at all. The only meds that take the headaches away are Vicodin, Percocet, etc. My doctor doesn’t want to give me those because she thinks at one point they were causing rebound headaches. I recently was given some for a dental procedure and it was wonderful to have a break from the headache pain also. It doesn’t take much, only one or two a day. Is there something I am missing? The only other thing I haven’t tried is exercise, which I hate. I have trouble believing that this would help with headaches anyway. Anyone out there who has had chronic headaches, and can give me an idea of what helped for them? I am a 44 F.
Thanks – Aleve is the brand name for naproxen, tried it.
What’s the theory about fresh garlic? Also, do you mean push in between my eyebrows or in the middle of one of them?
