Article by Neil Day

Migraines might be considered the worst of all head pains, but cluster headaches might not be far behind. Presenting with massive amounts of pain in and around a single eye, these headaches come on fast, hit hard, go away and then come back again in rapid succession. The fast-paced nature of these headaches gives rise to the name.

Cluster headaches are considered very dramatic occurrences and can strike their sufferers as much as eight times a day. The pain involved in an attack can be as short lived as five minutes or span out to cover three hours or more.

Cluster headache sufferers often describe the pain involved as explosive, excruciating and piercing. The best description is like the pain that might go along with having an ice pick jammed into a single eye. The pain, in fact, can be so severe that some sufferers are known to bang their heads on hard surfaces during attacks.

Fortunately, cluster headache problems are not very common, but for those who suffer from the condition that’s little comfort. In addition to the stabbing pain in the eye, a cluster headache can also come along with such symptoms nasal congestion, watery eyes, swollen eyelids and more. The patient’s heart beat may increase dramatically during an attack.

Those who ensure cluster headache symptoms for long periods of time sometimes develop other conditions as a result. Anxiety, or fear of another attack, and even depression can be very real side effects of the headache condition. Considering this, it’s a very good idea to seek assistance in getting the symptoms under control.

While there isn’t a 100 percent effective cure for cluster headache symptoms, there is some help available. There are some drugs available to help those who suffer from cluster headache symptoms. The typical treatments include those that help lessen the pain during attacks and other drugs that help prevent attacks from coming on in the first place. There are even some surgical procedures that can help with the condition.

One unusual feature that tends to go along with cluster headache attacks is the inherent intermittent nature of the condition. Attacks can come on for weeks on end and then stop for an extended duration. This in and of itself gives rise to the concerns about anxiety disorder setting in as a result of the headaches.

Cluster headaches are not as common as other forms of head pain, but they are one of the worst conditions that can arise. Coming on hard and fast, these headaches leave their sufferers feeling drained and feeling very afraid of another attack that might yet come. Since they do tend to bunch up, once one strikes, those who suffer are almost guaranteed a repeat, and unwanted, performance.

Article by Jared Winston

Headaches are not an uncommon phenomenon. Many people experience headaches from time to time. Most are mild, temporary annoyances that are easily remedied, and often are simply a symptom of a larger issue such as a sinus infection. Some headaches (such as migraines) are more severe and often more consistent than your basic pains. However, the garden-variety headaches and even migraine headaches cannot even hold a candle to the pain and suffering of a cluster headache. The experience of a cluster headache has been compared by those suffering it to the feeling of having an amputation performed on them without the use of an anesthetic.

Needless to say, this is a condition that is debilitating to those who suffer from it. Often times the frequency of the headaches is quite a bit more trying on a person the pain of a cluster headache is. As the name suggests, these headaches occur in ‘clusters.’ These groups of headaches may last anywhere from a few days to a matter of weeks, and headaches may occur several times a day during these periods.

There are two types of this condition, which are distinctive due to the differences in the frequency of the attacks between the two types. In the first type, known as episodic headaches, is typically characterized by a ‘cluster’ of headaches that will last for days or weeks, followed by a period of remission in which the sufferer will not have headaches at all. These periods of remission may be as long as several years in length, and both begin and end suddenly and without warning. The second type is chronic cluster headaches. This form of the condition is characterized by very little if any period of remission between attacks. These clusters are a nearly constant fixture in the lives of those who suffer from the chronic form.

The exact cause of cluster headaches is unknown. There are a number of possible theories that are being investigated within the medical community, but they remain unproven. The condition is rare, and as such it is often difficult to obtain enough data on these headaches to make any significant analysis of the condition. What is known is that men are several times more likely to experience a cluster headache than women are, and that the majority of attacks occur at night, shortly after the sufferer has fallen asleep.

Distinct changes in a person’s everyday life, most particularly their sleeping patterns, seem to be likely to bring on a cluster headache attack, indicating that a person’s natural rhythm may be somehow responsible for a cluster headache. Again, the connection is unclear, but there is hope for breakthrough in future research. Until then, there are a few methods of treating a cluster headache. These treatments generally include two medications, one that prevents headaches, and one which eases the pain of attacks when they occur. Taken together, these drugs are usually effective in bringing the condition down to levels that a person can handle, but they are most certainly not a cure.

In recent times the International Headache Society has added a third primary group of headache(s) to the two primary headache types – migraine and tension-type headache.

This third primary group includes Cluster headache, Chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania, and SUNCT (Short lasting Unilateral Neuralgia form headache attack with Conjunctival injection and Tearing!) and Hemicrania Continua.

Chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania is very similar to Cluster Headache and is often described as the female equivalent of Cluster Headache (Cluster Headache is more frequent in males).

It is interesting to note a report demonstrating that both chronic Paroxysmal Hemicrania and Hemicrania Continua (thought to be two different types of headache) respond to the same medication – Indomethacin. (Indomethacin is a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug used to reduce pain)

I have written before that Cluster Headache and Hemicrania Continua respond to blocking or injecting of the greater occipital nerve i.e. a feature of Cervicogenic (neck-related) Headache – just more evidence to support the role of neck disorders in many different headache forms …..

====

YourHeadacheSoultions.co.uk is one voice of the Watson Headache Institute.

The Watson Headache Institute was established to increase the awareness of cervicogenic (neck) disorders in headache and migraine by imparting my (and that of others) clinical experience and knowledge; to present and discuss past and present relevant research and to undertake and support rigorous clinical and scientific research in this specialty.

Appropriate and up-to-date knowledge is self-empowering; I believe that every headache sufferer has the right to know their headache diagnosis as precisely as possible (and what it means), to know the nature of their headache disorder, its outcome and possible types of treatment.

What has yet to gain acceptance is my (and that of others) belief, supported by my unparalleled clinical experience and a significant body of international research, that it is incorrect to consider headache and migraine types as totally different entities and that cervicogenic (neck) disorders can be instrumental in the headache and migraine process.

Although Physiotherapy, Chiropractic and Osteopathy are different disciplines, we are supporters of the idea that headache and migraine sufferers, no matter what their diagnoses, can be helped to live their lives more effectively through appropriate neck treatment. However, because treatment of the neck does not fit the medical model of headache and migraine, the model has demonstrated little interest in exploring this as an option. It is essential that all factors, which have the potential to sensitise the brainstem, be investigated equally. Currently this is not the situation – the neck is largely disregarded.

So, whilst YourHeadacheSolutions.com is also about Education, it is also a directory for headache and migraine sufferers to source practitioners who have a particular interest in and are skilled in examination of the neck as a source of your headache or migraine – to create a more comprehensive approach and provide an alternative, medication-free treatment.

ver the past 15 years I have developed a series of techniques, which, by way of temporary reproduction of headache and easing of the headache as a technique is sustained, confirm that a neck disorder is the cause of or a significant factor in the mechanism of the headache or migraine – this a key diagnostic criterion for cervicogenic or neck involvement in headache according to the International Headache Society – importantly for the disorder to be related to the headache or migraine process the headache has to ease as the technique is maintained. If both reproduction and lessening are not possible then the neck may not be the source of the headache or migraine. Furthermore my experience has shown that if the techniques are performed in a specific manner it is possible to determine which spinal segment is the cause of or contributing significantly to headache and migraine. Having determined which spinal segment (or segments — there may be more than one) is involved then this significantly increases the chance of the treatment being successful because treatment can be directed at specific, relevant spinal segments.

The application of these techniques in Europe, United Kingdom and Australia has become known as the ‘Watson Headache Approach’ and forms the basis of courses I present for physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths in Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, Norway and Spain — refer www.headacheeducation.com

The Watson Headache Institute was established to increase the awareness of cervicogenic (neck) disorders in headache and migraine by:

imparting my (and that of others) clinical experience and knowledge

and,

undertaking and supporting rigorous clinical and scientific research in this specialty.

Several people nowadays are suffering from migraine headache and constantly look for migraine headache relief. This condition affects people’s lifestyle, activities and work. I have prepared some notes to remember about the migraine symptoms and some common relief that can be used.
The migraine headache is due to the enlargement of the brain’s blood vessels and surrounding fibers. During the onset of the migraine, the temporal artery enlarges which affects the nerves and triggers the release of some chemicals. These chemicals being released causes inflammation and severity of the pain. With this said pain, people have become desperate in their need of relief. Here are the symptoms of the migraine headache.

It starts with a moderate pain but eventually heighten its severity. This usually occurs in just one side of the head.
There is pain behind the eye of the affected side of the face.
Pain becomes more devastating during sound and light exposure.
Produces nausea and vomiting.
Affects daily activities and can be a great interruption to life.

Around 25 million Americans are affected with migraine headaches. Women are most affected compared to men. Because of this migraine, a lot of people’s work, duties and daily activities are affected. Some would even miss their work due to the severe pain caused by the migraine headache.
In order to avoid migraines, major factors that trigger migraines should be avoided like stress, certain food, caffeine, wines, cheese and many more. There may be medications that can effectively give you relief but it could only be stopped during the onset of the migraine. However, it could still come back the next day or another day.
Medications that can be taken to get rid of the headache are Naproxen, ibuprofen, and Aspirin. They all contain caffeine which can be really good to take during the start of the attack. However if these medications are not successful then Immitrex, Zomif and Midrin can be helpful.
Preventive medications like Elavil, Cataflan and Topomax are good drugs that provide relief. There are narcotic medications too but this must be given only at emergency rooms and doctor’s clinics only.

Cluster headaches are almost frequently misunderstood to be migraines or several other types of headaches. They are a neurological disease that requires an intense number of pain that can last for minutes or hours hence it is nicknamed suicidal headache.

It is a terrible type of headache to the highest degree general in men that usually comes out behind or around an eye, sometimes beaming to the neck or shoulder and is very tough. Cluster headaches are repetitive headaches and can happen at any age yet most common in adolescence and middle age. The main grounds of these headaches is not known but family history plays a minor role in cluster headache than a few different types of headaches.

Heavy smoking, some medications, an interruption in normal sleep patterns, problems with the hypothalamus that is known to control the body s biological clock, alcohol use, stress and certain foods are some of the causes that trigger cluster headaches.. Cluster headaches start as critical, jerky headaches and occur 2 to 3 hours before falling asleep. It makes the eye and nose on the same side swell up, red and runny, and the headache remains on the same side of the head occurring repeatedly every day at the same time for several weeks before it goes away.

Cluster headaches oftentimes go undiagnosed for numerous years as patients often adopt it to be a migraine or other causes of headaches. Surprisingly enough, cluster headache treatments do not cure the headache; rather it relieves you from pain. The doctor may prescribe several weeks of anti-inflammatory, steroid hormone, medicinal drugs starting with a full dose at first then gradually minifying it. Breathing in 100% oxygen for some patients helps them relieve the pain. To prevent the headache doctors may order medicines such as Ergot preparations and Methysergide maleate however, double checking with the doctor for potential side effects is advisable.

Telling the doctor what happens while experiencing a headache is the only way to diagnose the condition. The doctor may then order an MRI to confirm his diagnosis.

Though cluster headaches are bad and insufferable at times it is not believed to be life-threatening and normally doesn t cause lasting functional changes. However cluster headaches are critical in terms of pain and can can mess up with daily procedures and activities thus it is always best to see a GP when early symptoms of cluster headaches set about.

Before using any of the cluster headache treatment available to you there’s a couple of thing you should be aware of. But first I think it would be a good idea to better inform you about what cluster headaches really are before going into the different cluster headache treatment. Don’t you think?

What are Cluster Headaches?

Cluster headaches also known as “Suicide headache” are considered some of the most extreme and painful headaches you can get. They usually occur in group or clusters in your head. The sufferers from these types of headaches experience symptoms like: Very severe headaches near one eye or around the temple area. The duration of those headaches can vary between fifteen minutes to three hours.

What are The Cluster Headaches Treatment Options?

Unfortunately there is not many options when it comes to cluster headache treatment. One of the best to date is know as “abortive treatment” and is quite simple. During the onset of a cluster headache the most common type of abortive treatment is the inhalation of pure oxygen.

This technique as been known to abort cluster headache attacks in as little as 5 minutes; however the downside is that you need to have oxygen ready at any time just in case you would have another attack.

Of course like any other condition there is always the use of over-the-counter medicine for this particular type of headaches. Unfortunately this kind of cluster headache treatment is not considered as being very effective. A lot of people complain that they tried all the different prescriptions and that none of them was able to remove the pain of the cluster headache.

Of all the headache types out there, cluster headaches are probably the worst kind. If you are suffering from this type of headache, I can imagine how hopeless you might feel. Unfortunately there is very small quantity of helpful treatments available to you.

Rest assured, there is hope for you. I know this is not an easy situation but you should avoid getting frustrated and remain calm about it. Of course it will take time and effort but you will eventually be able to find some form of treatment that will help you feel with the pain.

The best option for you would be to talk to your doctor. The diagnosis you will get will help you find the best treatment possible according to your condition.

As there are many different types of headaches there are also many headache remedy for sinus, migraine, cluster and tension headaches. Millions of Americans suffer from some type of headache and have visited a physician to find effective treatment. With the many types of remedies that have occurred over the years a few have found to be better then others and are used for headache sufferers, not matter what type of headache they have.

A useful headache remedy that can help equalize your body’s chemistry, as your urine alkalinity increases with a headache, is to take some apple cider vinegar. A glass of this acidic solution can bring your pH down to normal. You can use pH strips to test the levels, as you may not know the correct amount to take at first.

Eucalyptus oil mixed with a carrier oil can be used to massage your forehead. This type of aromatherapy treatment has been found to be effective for many individuals that get headaches.

Alternative Headache Remedies Without Using Drugs

Feverfew has been used to treat headaches for hundreds of years and can be effective on headaches associated with menstruation, meningitis and cluster headache, just chew on a few leaves. You may also be able to use feverfew health capsules or a tincture. Feverfew and aspirin work in similar ways as they both reduce inflammation. The inflammation of the blood vessels in your brain is thought to be a major cause of headaches.

Ginger and honey are also good headache remedies. Honey allows the blood to go through properly and ginger contains chemicals that can stop your blood vessels from expanding or becoming inflamed.

There are many other types of oils that can be used to relieve headache pain such as rosemary oil, lavender oil and peppermint oil. You can apply these oils to your neck, temples and forehead and they are said to be very soothing. Menthol is also used to relax the temporal muscles and particularly good for headaches related to tension and stress.

Litchum salts and peppermint tea have been used to treat cluster headaches. These remedies should be taken at the first sign of headache pain. You can also increase your blood flow and oxygen to the brain by taking a walk.

These are just some solutions for your migraine, cluster, tension or sinus headaches. The important thing is that you find the best remedy that suits your needs. If they persist, do not hesitate in visiting your doctor.

Cluster headaches are not very common. National statistics show that only 69 out of 100,000 people get them. Hence, you would find that this type of headache is not as well researched and discussed as the other types of headaches. Still, cluster headaches can be very painful; those who suffer from them would desperately want to look for an effective cluster headache pain relief.

A typical cluster headache sufferer is about 30 years old. Most the sufferers for this type of headache have their first cluster headache between the age of 20 and 50. Nevertheless, you can develop one at any time in your life. There have been reports of those who get their first symptoms before they even turn 10-years-old. Then, there are also some people who do not get inflicted until they are 80-years-old or older. Men are usually affected more often than women. In fact, only one of every six who suffer from a cluster headache is a female.

A clear understanding of the symptoms helps if you are looking for a cluster headache relief. A cluster headache is called as such because it usually attacks you in clusters. An attack can last between a half hour and two hours. You can also experience anywhere from one headache per week to six per day. Your attacks occur in waves. It can be between four and eight headaches per week. You may experience this for several years but this would be rarely the case.

You need to get a proper diagnosis from your doctor first. Your doctor can help you determine if you may be experiencing cluster headaches because your nasal passage is blocked.

Some other symptoms that commonly occur with cluster headaches include red eyes and sweating from your forehead and cheeks. The pain that usually begins around or above your eye and then spreads outward. These headaches come in a flash and reach their height of pain within two to fifteen minutes. At the same time, your heart rate will begin to beat at a much higher pace. These are important signs to note when you are trying to figure out what type of headache you are suffering from. A more accurate observation of your symptoms can help you come closer to an effective cluster headache pain relief.

As there is no known no cure, you would be anxious to find ways to reduce the pains that you suffer from. OTC analgesics such as aspirin are not an effective because your headache would probably be nearing its end by the time the pills begin to work. Doctors usually prescribe antihistamines, calcium channel blockers and ergot preparations for cluster headache pain relief.

Other than drugs, for cluster headache pain relief, you can look for ways to help you reduce stress and tension. Have adequate sleep, take plenty of breaks and go for massage therapy sessions. Adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle can do much to alleviate your pain and suffering.

Here’s the story:

On Halloween night I took my kids out and while we were walking I sat down on the curb and got incredibly nauseated and dizzy and a stabbing pain on the right side of my head behind my eye. It was bad enough that I could not get up. They had to call the ambulance to come get me. At this time I was bleeding heavily (period). At the hospital, They diagnosed it a cluster headache and gave me Demerol and oxygen therapy. It got better. I since have not had such an attack but I have had headaches. I went online and researched CH and I don’t match most of the symptoms. It was more like a migraine but my doctor said I don’t get them. I think it had something to do with my heavy period. What are your thought on this? Just wondering if anyone had something simalar?

Both cluster and migraine headaches, when chronic and severe can be very difficult to treat. Cluster headaches are characterized by severe stabbing one sided headaches, with pain behind the eye. They usually occur either the same time every day or are seasonal and when the attacks happen they last a few minutes to and hour. Many people want to move around when they have cluster headaches. Migraines on the other hand, have throbbing pain on one or both sides of the head. Light and sound are painful and nausea and vomiting may happen. Migraineurs as a result, want to be lying down in a quiet room as movement makes the pain worse.

So what do these two headaches have in common that may allow one treatment to work for both? Well, according to research from headache specialists at the American Headache Society, there is an area deep inside the brain responsible for registering headache pain. This part of the brain connects back to the nerves in the upper part of the neck which then connect to the nerves just under the skin at the back of the head. The nerves at the back of the head are called the occipital nerves and if they are over stimulated to the point of blocking impulses, this feeds back to the areas deep in the pain and blocks pain of both cluster and migraine headaches.

Two new systems have been developed recently for occipital stimulation. One is a hand held stimulator that is placed at the back of the head at the onset of a migraine headache. It is supposed to stop the headache through the feedback system. The stimulator is rather bulky and may require two hands to hold it in place. This may be difficult for some people but most should be able to manage it.

The second system involves a surgical procedure. This is a combination of implant stimulators and a battery pack that keeps the stimulator on. Two strips that contain the stimulators are surgically placed over the occipital nerves, just under the skin at the back of the head. Lead wires are run under the skin and connected to the battery. The system allows the patient to control the amount of stimulation depending on their pain levels. The most common problem so far with this type of system is breakage of the lead wires and the fact that the battery only lasts a year or two. Battery and lead wire replacement require another surgery.

As of 2008, two clinics are doing the procedure as a research trial. The clinic sites are the Michigan Head and Pain Institute in Ann Arbor, MI and the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. Both of the trials are closed and are not accepting new patients, however new trials may open elsewhere in the country since the results have been so promising. At this point 67% of cluster patients responded with eradication of their headaches and over 40% of migraineurs responded.

So what to do until the surgery is more readily available? Your doctor may be able to do occipital nerve blocks which may also serve the same purpose in treating the headaches. Similar research from the American Headache Society has indicated that even if you do not have pain at the back of the head, occipital nerve blocks may treat your cluster headaches or migraines effectively. Nerve blocks consist of a small amount of an anesthetic like lidocaine, mixed with a steroid and injected around the nerve.

Generally, with a severe headache profile, it is best to be assessed by a headache specialist to determine if an occipital stimulator or a nerve block is best for you.

Cluster headache is a severe, debilitating pain that attacks one cluster of the head, usually above an eyelid or at the temple. The pain is usually characterized as being repeatedly stabbed in the eye with an ice pick. When the pain attacks, one may notice the drooping of the lids from the affected eye as well as nasal congestion on the affected side.

The pain of a cluster headache is no joke. It tends to be so sever that some people say that it is nothing compared to things like childbirth or migraines. At the height of a cluster headache attack, even morphine does very little to assuage the pain. This piece of information is from the few individuals who have actually been correctly diagnosed with cluster headache.

Usually, severe headaches are just thought to be migraines but unfortunately remain understood and untreated. It is very important to correctly diagnose cluster headache because it is extremely painful and debilitating and it has a tendency to attack for a few minutes to a few hours.

The difficulty in realizing that it is cluster headache instead of migraine is that sometimes, people who suffer from cluster headache also experience the usual nausea and sensitivity to light that migraine sufferers experience. You can tell that it is cluster headache though from the fact that its attacks follow a pattern.

There is such a thing as chronic and episodal cluster headache. Actually, one who suffers from cluster headache can experience switches from chronic to episodal attacks and vice versa. The chronic attacks can easily be noticed because the cluster headache attacks at the same time everyday for several weeks and even months.

Episodal cluster headache attacks are episodes that happen also at the same time everyday for a few days or weeks and goes into long remission states. While the suffering from cluster headaches is benign, there have been reported cases of actual suicides from the extreme pain.

This is why it is quite important that if you feel that you or a loved one may be suffering from attacks of cluster headaches, do get yourselves diagnosed properly and receive treatment. Consult with your doctor and find out some of the triggers of a cluster headache and avoid them.

Also, at the onset of a cluster headache, one can actually get treatment that can abate the attack. For instance it has been reported that inhalation of pure oxygen at the onset of an attack will abate the assault of cluster headache.

Nearly everyone will suffer a headache (or several) throughout their lives which do not have some sort of underlying medical condition causing the pain. These headaches are Migraine, Tension and Cluster.

I’ve received a lot of feedback from my clients, telling me how much they’ve enjoyed my Migraine and Headache Relief program to cure both their tension and migraine headaches. My program is all natural and requires no medication.

Some of you have asked me if my program can help treat cluster headaches. Cluster headaches are the most rare of the primary headaches so I’ll first explain what each of the different types of primary headaches are in order to help identify which type of headache you might be suffering from.

A tension headache is described as pain in the head, neck and/or scalp. It can feel like a band squeezing the affected area. Over 80% of headache sufferers fall into this category.

Women suffer from tension headaches twice as much as men. For most sufferers, the pain is tolerable and most can complete daily tasks while experiencing the headache.

Triggers include: Depression, stress, anxiety, fatigue, lack of sleep and poor posture. The headaches tend to last from 30 minutes up to a week. They are diagnosed as either episodic (less than 15 days per month) or chronic (more than 15 days per month).

Most of us who suffer from tension headaches do not require medicine for treatment. We can gain relief from the pain via deep relaxation and breathing exercises, like my Migraine and Headache Relief program.

Migraine headaches, however, are considered vascular. This is an abnormal sensitivity of the arteries and the blood flow into the brain which causes pain in the affected areas. This type of headache is the second most common of the primary headaches.

A migraine headache is caused by abnormal blood flow to the arteries which in turn causes the arteries to constrict and dilate improperly and then causes a throbbing, painful sensation on the affected side of the head but sometimes spreading to both sides.

Women are three times as likely to suffer from migraines than men. For a few, the attacks are infrequent and not that severe but for most others, they are frequent and debilitating, meaning that the sufferer is unable to perform many daily tasks. These headaches can last anywhere from 4 hours to 72 hours, however, they can occasionally last for weeks.

Migraine symptoms include: Light and/or sound sensitivity, nausea, vomiting, an aura of “seeing spots” and sensitivity to smells – all of which tend to worsen with physical movement.

Triggers can include: Stress, fatigue, changes in weather, some foods (red wine, some cheeses, chocolate), fumes, loud noises and in some cases, other headache medication. Medicine is generally prescribed but most of the available migraine medications sport “rebound” headaches, which often feel like tension headaches.

Natural treatments include deep breathing and/or relaxation exercises or oxygen therapy.

A cluster headache is the least common of the primary headaches but is by far the most painful. It has even been dubbed the “suicide” headache due to the fact that some with this condition have resorted to this as a means of dealing with the pain.

Cluster headaches get their name because the headaches tend to occur in clusters. They will happen several times per day, lasting for the same amount of time and occuring at the same time per day. They tend to linger for several weeks, will dissipate and then recur with the same frequency and intensity.

Cluster headaches are much more severe than migraine or tension headaches and often strike without warning on one side of the brain only (unilateral), with pain behind the eye of the affected region. The pain tends to last an hour or less but the headaches strike several times per day.

The cause of cluster headaches is unknown but what is known is that the blood flows abnormally in the affected area, causing the blood vessels to dilate and this in turn puts pressure on the trigeminal nerve. Sufferers of this type of headache generally find more relief from staying active, rather than motionless like with migraine or tension headaches.

Men are five times as likely as women to suffer from cluster headaches. Other symptoms include: drooping eyelid, watery eyes and blocked nasal passages. In fact, many doctors misdiagnose cluster headaches as sinus headaches.

There are triggers for cluster headaches which include: Fatigue or lack of sleep, sleep apnea, snoring, nitroglycerine, stress, smoking, alcohol, and some foods. Just like migraines, cluster headaches are regarded as episodic or chronic.

There is a seasonal rhythm to most cluster headaches and many sufferers are affected during spring or fall. As mentioned, the headaches generally happen several times a day at the same time of day, with many activated during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. This is why some sufferers will try NOT to sleep to avoid the headache, but that just keeps the cycle going.

Several studies have been performed on cluster headache sufferers and one common theme has come forward – sleep apnea and excessive snoring seem to be the most common trigger. These both involve not getting enough oxygen to the brain. When these conditions were treated, researchers found that most of the time the cluster headaches subsided.

In order to diagnose this type of headache your doctor should perform a physical examination as well as medical history since some cluster headaches are genetic. The doctor may also run a CT or MRI to rule out a secondary condition causing the headache.

While most often prescribed to treat the problem, most pain medication is only preventative – it won’t prevent the headache. The preventative medicines that do exist tend to come with potentially serious side effects.

One effective treatment once the headache has begun is oxygen therapy.

My completely natural Migraine and Headache Relief Program incorporates additional oxygen promoting blood flow to the areas of the brain that require it. And if snoring may be your trigger, my all natural Stop Snoring Program has achieved amazing results.

Migraine Headache Pain Relief Management

This article is about migraine headache pain relief management. The author informs readers on how migraine headache pain differs from other kinds of pain; enumerates the different causes of headache pain; as well as explains the various types of headache pain. The article also cites a couple of guidelines and precautions on using headache pain relief medications.

One of the most complex forms of illnesses is the migraine headache pain. In fact, this condition is very common as it does not only triggers adults, but teenagers and children as well. Although unpleasant, headache pain is basically regarded as a normal part of a person’s daily life. Since headache pain is among the top reasons for medical appointments to doctors and physicians today, it only proves that there is really nothing more typical on this type of illness.

The major causes of headache pain vary from the different cases of headache. Among the top factors that trigger headache pain are viruses, bio-chemicals, hormones, and bacteria. Genetics also has something to do with a person’s susceptibility to headache pains. People with low levels of serotonin are more likely to suffer from headache. Serotonin is the neuro-chemical that protects an individual from pain.

Determining different types of headache pain

While irritating and unpleasant pain is inevitable in all types of headache, it actually comes in different forms. It is really important for one to know the various types of headache pain in order to have proper diagnosis and application of headache pain relief treatments.

   1. Migraine headache pain

This type of pain occurs on the one side of the head. The pain can become severe to the point that it can interfere with a person’s daily productivity.

   2. Cluster headache pain

This type of headache pain is severe and sudden. Although a cluster headache has a shorter duration compared to other types of headache, it can trigger up to six times in one day.

   3. Sinus headache pain

An infection, swelling, and irritation of the sinuses can spark a sinus headache pain. This type of headache pain is oftentimes mistaken with tension and migraine pains.

   4. Rebound migraine headache pain

A rebound migraine headache pain is oftentimes caused by over-consumption of migraine headache medications. Instead of diminishing the pain, pain reliever drugs can ultimately cause headache pains when abused.

Clinical correspondence in the latest Cephalalgia journal reports the presence of ‘cutaneous allodynia’ in two cluster headache patients.

What is cutaneous allodynia? Cutaneous (relating to or affecting the skin) allodynia (is a painful response to a normally non painful stimulus) so in this case there is a heightened, painful sensitivity to touch. This increased sensitivity to touch, along with other symptoms for e.g. photo-phobia (heightened sensitivity to light) and phono-phobia (heightened sensitivity to sound) is a sign of sensitisation of the brainstem.

Research shows quite clearly that the brainstems of migraineurs and tension headache sufferers are also sensitised …. and what do the ‘triptans’ do? they desensitise the brainstem and that is why they are effective in alleviating the pain in migraine, tension and cluster headache – all three headaches originate from the same condition i.e. a sensitised brainstem.

Cheers

Cluster Headache Surgery In India

Cluster Headache

Cluster headaches affect one side of the head (unilateral) and may involve tearing of the eyes and a stuffy nose. The headaches occur repeatedly every day at the same time for several weeks and then go away.

Some of the causes of cluster headaches may include: Some medications (such as nitroglycerin) heavy smoking, an interruption in your normal sleep pattern Problems with the hypothalamus, which controls your body’s “biological clock” The first attack most frequently arises during adolescence or the early 20s. Many patients report that alcohol triggers an attack…….

Ergotamine tartrate in a suppository, tablet, injection, or aerosol form is an effective pain reliever for some people, but the dosage must be limited to avoid side effects, especially nausea. It may also be prescribed to prevent attacks…….

Several types of surgery have been used to treat cluster headache : -

A ] Conventional surgery : -

Using a conventional invasive procedure, the surgeon cuts part of the trigeminal nerve with a scalpel or uses small burns to destroy part of the nerve. This form of surgery provides relief for about three-fourths of people with chronic cluster headache…….

B ] Radiosurgery : -

In a procedure called radiosurgery, a focused beam of radiation is used to destroy part of the trigeminal nerve. Radiosurgery is a noninvasive procedure with fewer side effects than conventional surgery, but the effectiveness, safety and permanency of the results aren’t well established…….

We at We Care Health Services, India have a different approach towards medical tourism as opposed to our counterparts abroad.
