Question by clarinet123: How do you know when it’s the end of your tension headache?
For those of you who get tension headaches, can you please help! I can’t take this anymore! The headache isnt painful, and I’m very thankful for it but it is uncomfortable after a while! I’m not talking about normal headaches, I’m talking about a TENSION headache! Where everything in your head feels tight (it’s kind of hard to explain) but anyways, How do I know when it’s almost the end? I’ve had it for almost a week and a half and I’m just ready for it to be over! Also, if anyone knows any helpful relief tips please help! I’m 17 years old and just graduated from high school, I don’t want to be celebrating like this! Thanks in advance!

Also, I can’t afford to go to the doctor so if it doesnt need to be checked by the doctor then I want to keep it that way! But if you all think a trip to the doctor is needed then I’ll go but I’m sure it’s a tension headache! I awaken with it, my head feels tight, it kind of feels better in the shower, and it’s at it’s worse when I’m thinking about it! But it is kind of hard not to think about it!

Best answer:

Answer by Bruce
Tension headaches don’t last a week and a half. See a doctor.

Whether you like it or not, a time’s going to come when your body begins to slow down. As far as a woman is concerned, menopause is the first definite sign of aging. But, menopause does not happen overnight. In fact, it is a very gradual process and in some cases, the transition may take up to 14 years. Irregular periods and the gradual stopping of the monthly cycle is the first indication of menopause. Every woman knows that. But, even before you periods begin to taper off, there are some early symptoms of menopause that can help you handle this tricky time in the most effective manner. That said, it is important to remember that the symptoms of menopause are highly unique. Each person has different experiences during menopause.

Early symptoms of menopause:

Changes in the monthly cycle: This is perhaps the earliest warning you can get. Your monthly cycle may become erratic. You may experience that what used to work like clockwork once upon a time has now developed a life and will of its own. You may also see that there is a change in the normal patterns of your cycle.

Hot flashes: Many women know exactly what this means. For no apparent reason, the back, neck and face may become hot due to the blood rushing to these areas. Some women even experience sweating, may become red in the face and may be hot to the touch. Women who experience hot flashes may also go through night sweats.

Night sweat: Some women may start feeling very cold in the middle of the night while they are actually sweating copiously. This is a surefire symptom of menopause.

Mood swings: This symptom may well go unnoticed because it simply creeps up on you. Many women complain of depression, feelings of unexplained sadness, anger and frustration. Even positive emotions are experienced. Whatever the emotion, it will be intense and there is a constant swing from one end of the spectrum to another.

Incontinence: Pregnancy is a leading cause of incontinence. Menopause is another. If urine leaks when you laugh, cough or sneeze, you can consider it as one of the important early symptoms of menopause.

Tenderness in the breasts: As women go through menopause, they may feel tenderness and pain in the breasts.

Headaches: Erratic levels of hormone in the body can lead to feelings of discomfort including headaches. In women who have suffered from headaches all their lives, symptoms may be worse.

Dryness: One of the early symptoms of menopause is the feeling of dryness in the vagina. As the amount of estrogen decreases due to menopause, the natural lining of the vagina dries up.

Weight gain: Menopause is also associated with the slowing down of your metabolism. So, if you find that you are gaining weight for no particular reason, it could be a symptom of menopause.

Menopause symptoms intermittently generates in Women by the fluctuation of ovarian function. Immediate onset of menopause symptoms often follows a surgical menopause

Headache Ringing Ears Dizziness

Menopause is a point in a woman’s life when she stops menstruating for a full year and this can be overwrought with many symptoms, some bearable and some discomforting.
Menopause symptoms like mood swings, loss of libido, extreme fatigue, hot flashes and weight gain are a cause of concern for most women. However, less common symptoms like Tinnitus- ringing or buzzing in the ear- change of body color and sometimes a sensation akin to electric shock under the skin may be worrisome. Headache Ringing Ears Dizziness

Medical opinions associate Tinnitus with menopause. According to many studies, this
ringing in the ears is a physical condition that can take place due to other reasons as well. Medicines like Prozac and regular aspirin may cause Tinnitus and research is underway to establish the role these medications play in causing hormonal changes during menopause.

Menopause and Tinnitus: Causes

Many women may opt for an HRT, (Hormonal Replacement Therapy) as a treatment for early menopause, hysterectomy and peri-menopause or because their physician recommended it. Certain studies point a finger at HRT aggravating Tinnitus, as it uses artificial progesterone to ensure regular cyclical bleeding.

Most people experience Tinnitus as age sets in and menopausal women are not the only sufferers, though they seem worse affected than men. The onset of Tinnitus in menopause can make the best of us complain of fluid retention, depression, headache, dizziness, insomnia, raised blood pressure and migraines.

This ringing in the ears can be linked with both peri-menopause and menopause for women in their forties, fifties and sixties more, as compared to any other age group. Another theory links menopause symptoms of sweating, hot flashes and mood changes to side effects of Tinnitus. Circulating hormone estrogen and progesterone can lead to or aggravate Tinnitus during menopause. Headache Ringing Ears Dizziness

Menopause and Tinnitus: BHRT

Modern times have seen medical developments leading to Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy that has gained more popularity than HRT. This is mainly because BHRT consists of plant compounds, is identical in structure to human hormones, and therefore found more effective than HRT. This news brings hope for women going through menopause and putting up with Tinnitus as it may relieve them of the side effects associated with traditional HRT.

Menopause and Tinnitus: Effects

Menopause brings with it other issues like emotional stress and vitamin and mineral deficiencies, which can be common antagonists leading to Tinnitus. Nutritional deficiencies of B Vitamins, zinc, folic acid, antioxidants that are crucial in maintaining the overall health of women, may bring on Tinnitus or worsen the existing condition.

Menopause and Tinnitus: Treatments

Hope springs eternal and women’s health experts offer simple solutions to the problems associated with menopause and Tinnitus. The first step is exercise and good nutrition, as these are beneficial for overall general health and bring relief from the persistent ringing in the ears. To make that annoying buzz go away, it is important for all menopausal women to take sufficient rest, particularly when stressed out or fatigued.

Seeking medical advice from an expert can clue you in about metabolic disturbances and provide necessary guidance about specific diets that could help. There are nutritional supplements like Arches Tinnitus relief formula, Tinnitus stress formula and Tinnitus B12 formula available for women undergoing menopause and suffering from this pain in the ear. Headache Ringing Ears Dizziness

Before using any of the cluster headache treatment available to you there’s a couple of thing you should be aware of. But first I think it would be a good idea to better inform you about what cluster headaches really are before going into the different cluster headache treatment. Don’t you think?

What are Cluster Headaches?

Cluster headaches also known as “Suicide headache” are considered some of the most extreme and painful headaches you can get. They usually occur in group or clusters in your head. The sufferers from these types of headaches experience symptoms like: Very severe headaches near one eye or around the temple area. The duration of those headaches can vary between fifteen minutes to three hours.

What are The Cluster Headaches Treatment Options?

Unfortunately there is not many options when it comes to cluster headache treatment. One of the best to date is know as “abortive treatment” and is quite simple. During the onset of a cluster headache the most common type of abortive treatment is the inhalation of pure oxygen.

This technique as been known to abort cluster headache attacks in as little as 5 minutes; however the downside is that you need to have oxygen ready at any time just in case you would have another attack.

Of course like any other condition there is always the use of over-the-counter medicine for this particular type of headaches. Unfortunately this kind of cluster headache treatment is not considered as being very effective. A lot of people complain that they tried all the different prescriptions and that none of them was able to remove the pain of the cluster headache.

Of all the headache types out there, cluster headaches are probably the worst kind. If you are suffering from this type of headache, I can imagine how hopeless you might feel. Unfortunately there is very small quantity of helpful treatments available to you.

Rest assured, there is hope for you. I know this is not an easy situation but you should avoid getting frustrated and remain calm about it. Of course it will take time and effort but you will eventually be able to find some form of treatment that will help you feel with the pain.

The best option for you would be to talk to your doctor. The diagnosis you will get will help you find the best treatment possible according to your condition.

5 Pregnancy Complications That You Need To Know

Occasionally a perfectly fit, healthy woman can have something go wrong with little or no warning. Because there are uncertainties and risks associated with any pregnancy, the importance of antenatal care cannot be overstated. If you suspect that you might have a problem, such as the ones that are addressed below dont hesitate to phone your doctor or midwife right away.

Vaginal Bleeding
One of the most common problems in pregnancy, vaginal bleeding can be the most alarming. When bleeding occurs, the cause must be found promptly. Your doctor or midwife may ask questions or run special tests. Most of the time, bleeding stops and the baby is carried to term without further problems. However, occasionally bleeding is a sign of a serious problem such as miscarriage. Dont delay if you experience any bleeding during pregnancy. Your health and that of your baby can depend on prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Pregnancy Induced Hypertension
With each antenatal appointment, your blood pressure will be checked. In about 7 out of every 100 women, pregnancy causes hypertension. This often occurs after the 20th week of pregnancy. Pregnancy induced hypertension can be harmful to both baby and mother if not treated. In mild cases, rest can bring blood pressure back to normal levels. However, sometimes if the hypertension is not responding to medical treatment, a baby will have to be delivered pre-term to prevent a complication called eclampsia where the mother experiences seizures and severe muscle contractions. In rare cases, this can be fatal. Make sure to call your midwife or doctor right away if you experience any of the following symptoms that could signal pregnancy-induced hypertension:
Severe headache
Swelling of the face or hands
Severe pain in the upper right part of the abdomen
Blurred vision
Sudden, pronounced weight gain

Gestational Diabetes
Like pregnancy-induced hypertension, diabetes can also develop during pregnancy in some women. It is caused by hormones made by the placenta that alter the way insulin works. Often, a pregnant woman has no symptoms of gestational diabetes, and this is why you will be asked to provide a urine sample with each antenatal visit. Your urine will be tested for the presence of glucose. The major complication associated with gestational diabetes is macrosomia. Babies with macrosomia are overly large, often too large to fit safely through the birth canal. Overly large babies also often have jaundice, breathing problems, and low glucose levels.

Pre-term Birth
Pre-term labor (labor that starts before the end of the 37th week) can lead to pre-term birth. Approximately 1 in 10 babies born in Great Britain are born pre-term. The earlier that a baby is born, the greater the risk of a problem. While pre-term labor can happen to any woman, there are several factors that are linked to this pregnancy complication such as:
Defects in the uterus or cervix
Infection in the mother
Bleeding during the second trimester of pregnancy
Problems with the placenta such as placenta previa
Premature rupture of membranes
Hypertension

If pre-term labor is diagnosed early, often birth can be postponed. This gives your baby extra time to mature. Make sure to call your midwife or doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms that could signal pre-term labor:
Change in vaginal discharge (especially if its watery or bloody)
Pelvic or abdominal pressure
Constant backache
Abdominal cramping or contractions
Ruptured membranes (your water breaks)

Postdate Pregnancy
Approximately 10% of babies are not born by the 42nd week of pregnancy. This is not a problem for the vast number of these babies who are born between the 42nd and 44th weeks. However, as a pregnancy moves past 42 weeks, a baby has a higher risk of developing:
Meconium aspiration (inhaling the greenish waste that is emptied from the bowels into the amniotic fluid)
Macrosomia (growing too large to be delivered vaginally)
Dysmaturity syndrome (born malnourished with thin wrinkled skin, long fingernails, and lots of hair)

As you approach your due date, your doctor or midwife will begin closely monitoring the well-being of your baby and the condition of the placenta. If the baby seems to be active and the amniotic fluid appears normal, most likely you will have to wait for labor to begin on its own. If there is any chance of risk to your baby, your labor may be induced with a drug called oxytocin that causes uterine contractions.

Being overweight, drinking a lot of alcohol and not eating right contribute to high blood pressure. The person may not notice anything wrong now but in a few years, this will come in the form of a stroke that could either kill or leave anyone paralyzed.

Studies reveal that this affects more than 50 million Americans with about 30% still unaware what could happen in the future.

There are no symptoms to tell that a person has high blood pressure. Going to the doctor regularly can prevent this but those who don’t will experience things such as headaches, dizziness and nose bleeds which could already mean something is wrong.

Pain in other parts of the body is another warning of imminent danger. Other red flags are excessive sweating, frequent urination, muscle cramps or even palpitations. Should any of these happen to the person, it will be a good idea to visit a physician to find out what is the problem.

Doctors can check on the blood pressure by wrapping a machine on the upper arm, inflating the cuff and listening to the flow of blood using a stethoscope. Normal blood pressure is around 120 over 80. Should this be 140 over 90 or higher, the person has hypertension. It isn’t hard to tell one has high blood pressure given the size of the patient. This is because doctors have a standard given an individual’s gender, height and age so those who are above that are at risk of high blood pressure.

The doctor has to go through the standard operating procedure of asking some personal questions, which includes the individual’s medical history. If this runs in the family and a blood test has confirmed the suspicions of the physician, a solution can be planned before it is too late. The only way to lower the high blood pressure will be for the person to make some lifestyle changes. This usually includes eating healthy, and exercising with the objective of losing those excess pounds so the good cholesterol in the body is balanced against the bad cholesterol.

The person will also have to quit smoking and giving up the daily consumption of alcohol. Headaches lead to dizziness up to the point that some people feel nauseated or want to just faint. This can be fatigue or high blood pressure that is a warning of something bad that could happen if proper action is not taken so change must happen to make the blood pressure normal.

WHEN HEADACHE BECOMES SEVERE

Although headache is quite common to many people, experts say that people should not ignore headaches especially if they become severe. Based on medical findings, the most common symptom of severe headache is related to a migraine attack caused by the dilation of blood vessels on the brain.

Severe headache usually leads to vomiting, distorted vision, nausea, dizziness, and the like. What you can do is to take over-the-counter medication such as oral analgesics like aspirin, ibuprofen, or paracetamol can provide relief and are best if taken as soon as symptoms start to occur.

But when the headache becomes worse, make sure that you visit your health care provider because it can also be an indication of more serious illnesses like meningitis or the inflammation of the meninges or membrane around a person’s brain; sub-arachnoid haemorrhage due a bleeding in the space between the brain and the arachnoid layer of the meninges, stroke, blood pressure, brain tumor, and temporal arteritis due to the inflammation of the arteries in the scalp.

Other causes of severe headache migraine, a condition that occurs and recurs in patterns; sinusitis that is a severe pain experienced behind your cheek bones or above the bridge of your nose usually associated with a blocked nose. steam and painkillers that should relieve the symptoms but if taken in wrong dosages can lead to severe and throbbing pain, fevers that are untreated like flu, tonsillitis, chest infections and the like, neuralgia or due to the irritation of the nerve that produces pain sensation in response to outside activities, and glaucoma or other acute eye problems that most of the time lead to severe frontal headaches and deteriorating eyesight.

Heath care experts agree that using any medication should only be part of a wellness program. They also agree that successful treatment of chronic headaches should be combined approaches of medication and life-style changes like avoiding any listed headache triggers, personal and family counseling, stress management, and relaxation therapies.

In order to treat any type of headache, it is a must that you know what causes it. Before taking in any painkillers or undergoing any headache treatment procedure, make sure that you have consulted with your physician or health care provider first so he/she can give you the appropriate prescription or can give you a referral to appropriate experts if your headache is caused by any other disorder.

Is this your first pregnancy? Yes! Then, congratulations are in order. For women, who are expecting for the first time, it is both an exciting and a nervous moment.

But, how did you find out that you are pregnant? A missed menstrual period is usually the first sign of pregnancy. Don’t worry, if you do not remember when you last menstruated. There are several other signs of pregnancy that appear during the first few weeks. Some of these early signs of pregnancy are described as follows:

Physical Changes: One of the surest signs of first pregnancy is the change in appearance of your breasts. Your breasts may feel tender, sore, fuller or heavier. This happens because your breasts begin to grow as your body releases a larger quantity of estrogen and progesterone. Another first pregnancy symptom is development of tiny spots called tubercles around your nipples.

Lower Energy Levels: If it is your first pregnancy, you will feel an increased sense of fatigue. This is because your body has been working twice as hard to produce an increased level of hormones and blood to carry nutrients to the foetus. During this time, your body also releases a larger quantity of progesterone hormone, which induces sleepiness and a sense of fatigue.

Implantation Bleeding: When the fertilized egg attaches itself to the lining of uterus, your body sheds a little blood, similar to menstrual blood, only lighter and spottier. This is also accompanied with cramping as your uterus begins to enlarge.

Morning Sickness: Morning sickness is another sign of first pregnancy. Due to an increased level of estrogen, the stomach empties slowly, causing a feeling of nausea. Pregnant women also develop a heightened sense of smell, which can also trigger nausea and vomiting.

Other Indicators:Other indicators of first pregnancy include frequent urination, which is caused by the enlarging uterus pushing on the bladder. Increase in circulation of blood due to pregnancy hormones leads to headaches. Constipation is also a sign of first pregnancy. In the first trimester of pregnancy, a woman also goes through a lot of mood swings under the influence of hormones. Increased oral temperature when you wake up is also an indicator of first pregnancy.

There are a lot of misconceptions about the newborn baby that pregnant women must be aware of. While, most expectant mothers expect their babies to be cute, it does not always happen that way. A lot of babies have a swollen head due to passing through the birth canal. The baby may have random strands of hair or a head full of unruly hair. Swollen eyes and little chicken legs with a huge head is also very common in new-born babies.

Depending on how hard your labor was, a baby may have a pointy head or a bruise on the top of the head, or cephalohematoma. Your baby may also have a flat nose and an invisibly small chin. Delivering the baby through caesarean section reduces the occurrence of such abnormalities to the baby’s head. However, you do not need to panic if your little bundle of joy is born with some such unusual features, as these fade away in a couple of days.

So, all you women going through your first pregnancy enjoy this period and look forward to welcome a new life into your life.

When people are unable to think properly and look straight, chances are the person has a headache. Cases such as these may be mild to severe which is why doctors say, ” its only in the head.”

There are two kinds of headaches. The first is called the tension headache, which may happen for a few minutes to a few hours. It usually goes away by drinking some water or taking a break from whatever the person is doing.

Those who are experiencing this for more than 15 days in a given month has something worse which is the second kind called a chronic headache. Research shows that there are very few people that have this problem. This often occurs to women than men perhaps because of hormones and other chemicals in the body.

Scientists do not yet know the real cause of a chronic headache. Some attribute it to stress or not getting enough nutrients in the diet. Believe it not, the type of medicine being taken may also be the cause of this problem.

Should this occur for more than two days, it is best to consult with a doctor immediately for proper treatment. Doctors will not be able to tell that the patient has a chronic headache. This can only be done after answering some questions such as how long the headaches have happened including one’s medical history.

To narrow down the problem, a blood test and a neurological exam will be done on the patient. Two of these tests are the CT scan and the electroencephalogram or EEG. If the brain activity is normal and there are no problems inside like a broken blood vessel or tumor, only then can doctors say it is a chronic headache.

There are various drugs in the market that are there to help treat chronic headaches. Unfortunately, there have been instances where it just got worse after taking it. Should this happen, the patient should stop taking the medicine and try something different.

Some researchers have pointed out the getting help from a chiropractor can make chronic headaches go away. This is because the techniques used by these professionals are not only to relieve any pain or tension in the spine because this comforts the whole body.

Another eastern technique that is used to treat chronic headaches is acupuncture. This works by applying needles to sensitive spots to relieve tension in the body.

Everyone feels stress. It’s a part of life. But when daily stressors become so overwhelming that they begin to manifest themselves in physical, emotional or behavioral problems, and then stress overload may be the culprit.

Stress Overload is caused when pressures at work or home become so intense, or last so long, that you begin to feel overwhelmed and out if control. This happens when the hypothalamus continually releases adrenaline and cortisol into the bloodstream, which causes the body to react by increasing blood pressure and heart rate, opening blood vessels wider to allow more blood to be pumped to major organs, and large muscle groups, and glucose to be released by the liver to increase energy and stamina due to ongoing stress in one’s life.

Keeping the body under constant “alert” can be damaging to the heart, lungs, brain and immune system. Chronic stress overload can cause serious health issues including: high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, stroke and depression. It is a disease that must be treated to avoid long-lasting physical and mental affects on the body.

Signs of Stress Overload.

When bad stress is becoming detrimental to your health, your body begins to give off signs that stress overload is beginning. People with stress overload may begin to feel the following on a regular basis:

-Anxiety and panic attacks

-Constantly feeling pressured, overwhelmed, or hurried

-Irritability and moodiness

-Stomach ailments

-Headaches

-Chest pain

-Sudden onset of allergic reactions

-Sleep problems

-Overwhelming sadness or depression

What Causes Stress Overload?

Why do some people seem to thrive on stressful situations, while others crumble under its weight? Everyone deals with life’s stressors differently. Some can easily shrug off a bad day (or several of them), while others continue to dwell on the pressures of day, long after they are experienced. Add to that an unexpected illness in the family, ongoing problems at work or home, or an overly crammed schedule, and stress overload may occur.

Some common stressors that may cause stress overload include:

-Exposure to ongoing violence

-Death of a loved one

-Ongoing problems at work or home

-An inability to relax

-Constant overworking

-A chronic illness in self or a loved one

Sometimes, a stressful situation can become so severe, the posttraumatic stress disorder results. This is a stress reaction that develops in people who experience such a traumatic event that their body and mind exhibits very serious physical, mental and emotional symptoms to the stress.

Anxiety too, can be a result of daily stress overload, which can make even the most menial stressor seem overwhelming.

Dealing With Stress Overload.

Stress overload can be dealt with by learning to: slow down and relax; a variety of relaxation exercises, or new coping mechanisms. But, sometimes, professional help and/or medication is needed to ease the stress being experienced while the patient learns how to better deal or eliminate it.

Those who suffer from migraine headache will usually have a chronic problem and will continue to have migraines off and on throughout their lives. So how do you know if you have a normal headache or a migraine headache? A migraine headache is usually a pounding pain or throbbing on one side of the head, often around the eye, forehead or back of the head. It may feel like the pain radiates through the eye to the back of the head. Though the pain is on one side of the head, it will not occur on the same side each time, it will change sides for each migraine attack. Other symptoms that may accompany a migraine headache are vomiting, nausea, sensitivity to light and in some cases people may experience an aura which occurs before the actual headache pain. An aura may be seeing lines in front of your eyes, losing your site for a few seconds, hearing noises or having strange tastes and these are often the warning signals of an oncoming migraine. Not everyone will experience an aura when they have a migraine, some people will have migraines with an aura while others suffer from common migraine without an aura. The other type of migraine is the mixed tension migraine when a person experiences a mixture of a migraine headache and a tension headache. In this case the person may have pain on both sides of the head or just on one side. Other symptoms may include a tightness in the head or a feeling like having a clamp over the head. Tension headache may also include feeling depressed, sluggish and weak. Unfortunately for those who do suffer from any type of migraine, they are likely to reoccur. There are medications to help with migraine pain and also natural therapies that may help with migraines.

People with chronic headaches often have pain 25 or more days a month, pain that is far more debilitating than scientists previously thought, according to an Ohio University researcher who is leading a study of 245 chronic headache sufferers.

Results from the study found that 66 percent of participants have headaches nearly every day.

The research was presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Headache in San Francisco.

Weekly records kept by patients indicate that more than 70 percent record disrupted sleep, fatigue and headache-related anxiety or stress. Forty-four percent say their headaches affect their performance at work or school and 72 percent said the pain caused them to miss work or school an average of 3.5 days in the last six months.

Unfortunately, chronic headache pain disrupts the lives of millions of people worldwide. Thankfully, there are ways to treat the debilitating discomfort of tension headaches, migraines, and cluster headaches. But, how do you know which kind of chronic headache pain treatment is right for you?

Chronic headache pain treatment includes medication or natural remedies. The first step is to visit your doctor to find out what kind of headache you have, and if it is chronic, then, a chronic headache pain treatment will be suggested by your doctor. Also, consider getting a second opinion just to be on the correct side of the diagnosis.

To be considered for chronic headache pain treatment, a person must have acute pain on a regular basis that is not cured by over-the-counter drugs, such as such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil).

Medication

Doctor-prescribed, brand-name medications are used frequently as chronic headache pain treatment methods. Medications, such as Imetrex or Maxalt, are typically used to treat chronic headache pain associated with migraines and cluster headaches. And, in very severe cases, strong narcotic painkillers, like Oxycodon and Vicodine, may be used as part of a chronic headache pain treatment plan. However, many doctors agree that a chronic headache pain treatment plan cannot consist of medication alone.

Seddon Savage, M.D., a pain specialist from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire says, “Treatment for chronic pain is about much more than medication. It can also involve stress relief and relaxation, physical therapy, improved sleep and nutrition habits, and exercise.”

Alternative Methods

Medication is not for everybody. If you would rather find a more natural way to treat your pain, there are many alternative methods of chronic headache pain treatment.

• Acupuncture. Traditional Chinese acupuncture therapy uses small needles that are inserted into specific points of the body. Many people swear by this chronic headache pain treatment

• Acupressure. If acupuncture needles frighten you, you may want to try acupressure. Instead of needles, acupressure relies on fingertips to stimulate channels of energy in the body.

• Fragrant Oils. Some oils have been proven to be great chronic headache pain treatments. Try using peppermint oil, chamomile, rosemary, or lavender to alleviate your pain. Keep in mind, a little oil goes a long way.

Since pain varies from person to person, Chronic Headache pain treatment is individualized. While medication may work perfectly for some, acupuncture or acupressure works better for others.

For more information about chronic headache pain treatment, check out the National Headache Foundation’s website. This site may lead you in the right direction in order to find a chronic headache pain treatment plan that works best for you.

My headaches usually involve migraine pain in the right back side of my head, facial pain, jaw pain, and neck pain. I have been on more medications than I can even remember for prevention and treatment of the headaches. I have sen all sorts of doctors, a physical therapist, pain specialist, orthopedist, neurologist, and probably more. I am at my witts end! I just had sinus surgery 2 weeks ago in hopes it would help, I don’t think it has. There has to be someone out there who has a similar problem that could possibly help?? Thank you everyone!

Migraine headaches are neither all caused by the same trigger nor effectively dealt with in the same way. In fact, effective treatment varies from person to person. Here are some common methods that work when treating migraine headaches.

A migraine treatment that works well for many individuals is one of the over the counter treatments that are available. There are many pain relief products that are specifically made to treat migraine headaches. These products can be very effective for some people.

Another option for migraine headache treatment is to go a physician and get a prescription for a medication that’s specifically designed to help with migraine headaches. If you discuss your migraines with your doctor then he or she will be able to prescribe a medicine that very well might help with your migraines.

There are also many “natural” treatments for migraine headaches. For example, placing a cold compress on your forehead often helps. While this may not totally relieve the migraine pain, it should certainly yield some temporary relief. The coldness of the compress will help open up the blood vessels and that will help to relieve the pain.

Another “natural” treatment is something that’s called feverfew. Feverfew is an herb that’s been used for hundreds of years to help relieve a variety of pains. As the name suggests, feverfew is also used to reduce fevers. However, historically two of the biggest uses for feverfew have been to relieve pain due to headaches and arthritis. Even today feverfew is known to relieve migraine headaches.

Magnesium is another potential “natural” source of relief for migraine sufferers. Several studies have shown that magnesium does indeed provide relief from migraines. Magnesium is found in foods such as nuts, seeds, whole grains, and green leafy vegetables. Taking magnesium regularly may actually cause your migraines to appear less often and, when they do occur, to be less severe.

Another way to treat migraine headaches involves prevention. Often the best migraine headache treatment is to stay away from the things that actually triggered the migraine. Food is actually one of the main causes of migraines. Sensory stimuli, stress, and hormonal changes are also significant causes of migraines. If a migraine sufferer can figure out what’s causing the migraine headaches then simply avoiding the cause will help stop the migraines.

Since no two individuals are the same, it’s up to each person to determine what causes their migraines and what’s effective in stopping the headache. While there are many effective medicines on the market, there are also several effective natural treatments. Of course, finding what causes a migraine and then avoiding that trigger is the best way to deal with any migraine headache.

It seems like women do it all these days. We work outside the home, we care for our families and we cook and clean everyday. Just when it seems like our lives “get going,” (i.e. the kids are grown up, there are no more school lunches to make, etc) menopause hits us like a ton of bricks.

Most of us don’t think of researching and learning about “the change” until it is already happening to us. Then, when we are miserable, we try to find a way out of the discomfort. There are many benefits in learning about menopause well before it happens to us, and there are even some things you can do before it happens that will lessen the suffering when it does come!

It is certainly recommended that you see your doctor while you are going through menopause, but there are also some herbal remedies that can help you through “the change.” You can find an herbal pill called Black Cohosh at many department stores and drugstores. This herb will keep your hot flashes to a minimum, and it also relieves cramping and menstrual pain. Another herb that can help you is Chaste tree, a hormonal balancer that lessens depression set on by menopause.

The normal age that women start menopause is usually around fifty to fifty-one, but there are also cases where it starts early, like as a result of surgery, chemotherapy, cancer or other serious diseases. Menopause can also start early without a cause.

Before “the change” occurs, you will go through a phase called “Peri-Menopause.” During this time it is normal to have very heavy menstrual cycles, mood swings and depression. The herbs discussed above (especially the Black Cohosh) will greatly improve these symptoms. The herb, “Liferoot,” is another good treatment that helps eliminate hot flashes and alleviates those heavy periods. If you are experiencing depression, try taking Gingko or St. John’s Wort to help improve your mood, stress and anxiety.

After the first phase, menopause really starts and more symptoms can develop. These symptoms can include:

• Hot flashes

• Night sweats

• Migraine headaches

• Insomnia

• Weight gain

• Aches and pains in joints and muscles

• Dizziness

• Fatigue

• Depression

• Skin problems

This list can be very overwhelming, but don’t worry; they don’t usually occur all at once! If you have any of these symptoms for a prolonged amount of time, and none of the herbal remedies are working, make sure you see your doctor.

Some people would rather go to their doctor and get a prescription than trust herbal remedies, and this can work for your menopause symptoms as well. Remember though, that some of these medications can upset your hormonal balance, and some estrogen supplements are really not healthy for you in the long run. Some of the things your doctor can give you are:

• Estrogen replacement

• Birth control pills

• Progesterone cream

• Vitamin supplements

Vitamin supplements should be taken whether or not you are going with herbal or prescription remedies for your menopause. Your body will be going through something stressful, new and extra vitamins are needed to help your body regulate itself.

Pregnancy, whether it was planned or not, is important for any woman. Also, it is important to take good care of your body while it is forming another life inside. If you suspect that you might be pregnant, there are things you should do as soon as possible to help your body be as healthy as it can be.

It is important that you get sufficient of “the right stuff” to help prevent birth defects. Your midwife or doctor might want you to be taking prenatal vitamins, and often extra folic acid, at this early pregnancy stage. It is also wise to stop doing something that could get bad materials inside your body, such as smoking and taking birth control pills.

How Can You Tell If You Might Be Pregnant?

There are many common symptoms at this stage of early pregnancy. Not all pregnant moms have all the symptoms, but you could have at least one or two of them – maybe more. Take a look at the symptoms common at this stage of early pregnancy:

1. Missing Menstrual Period

One of the first indicator for women is to miss their menstrual period. Sometimes it is late, but a pregnant woman will skip it altogether. For some women, they suspect they are pregnant before they even miss their period. There are other symptoms that can help lead them to that conclusion.

2. Spotting

Spotting may be noticed by many women – which is quite a bit lighter than a regular period, though it happens about the same time that the period would be expected. Implantation of the fertilized embryo into the uterine wall, which is letting off some blood, caused the spotting. It is usually a brownish color, like dried blood. It should not be bright red, or in great quantity.

3. Exhaustion

Another common symptom at this stage of early pregnancy is to have exhaustion. Considering all the work your body is doing – making a new being – no wonder it takes its toll on the body! Also, there are hormonal shifts in the pregnant woman’s body that can make the mommy-to-be feel she is losing energy. For example, progesterone, which is in high levels during pregnancy, tends to be sedating. If you have this situation at this stage of early pregnancy, take a nap.

4. Headaches or Back Pain

It is also common to have headaches or back pain early in pregnancy. This is caused by the hormonal changes as well as the other physical changes to the body that come with pregnancy.

5. Frequent Bathroom Visit

Another symptom that is common is the need to go to the bathroom much more often than before. There are a few reasons for this, including the bladder getting irritable with the extra blood in the pelvic region, but the bottom line is, you may not want to go too far from the security of a bathroom during this stage of early pregnancy.

6. Changes In Body

Most women in the early pregnancy stage notice that their breasts become swollen and tender. The blood vessels on them can look like road maps, and the Montgomery glands (the little “pimple” looking things by the nipples) get bigger, along with the areolas (the red “target” around your nipple). These changes are in preparation for breastfeeding your baby.

7. Morning Sickness

At this early pregnancy stage, probably the most frustrating symptom is that of the nausea of morning sickness. While it doesn’t stick just with morning (some women have nausea all day) and not all women even get it, it is very common among pregnant women. Fortunately, it usually only lasts for the first trimester.

Closing Words

Early pregnancy stages are very important for your baby. You need to make sure if you are in it or not. Monitoring symptoms is as important as taking a pregnancy test. Do both and if the result is positive, then congratulations. You’re going to be a mommy.

About tension headache

More than 300 known medical disorders can produce headaches. Primary headaches include migraine, tension-type and cluster headache. Furthermore, about 90% of the people who see a doctor for headaches will generally have one of the above mentioned types of headaches. Primarily, headaches are considered to be harmless, but there recurrence can be an issue for many people.

Tension headaches are further divided into episodic or chronic with the presence or absence of pericranial muscle tenderness (pain on the outside of the skull).

People with episodic tension-type headaches will normally have a history of at least 10 previous headache episodes lasting from 30 minutes to 7 days but occurring fewer than 180 times a year. This type of headache must have at least two of the following characteristics like:

Pressing/tightening (non-pulsating) quality, located on both sides of the head Mild or moderate intensity Not aggravated by routine physical activity No nausea or vomiting Possible sensitivity to light or sound but not both

People with chronic tension-type headache have an average headache frequency of 15 days a month or 180 days a year for 6 months. In addition, these people must also meet the criteria for episodic tension-type headache. Moreover, people suffering from chronic tension-type headache must not be suffering from another disorder that is easily detected by a physical and neurological examination.

How to detect a headache caused by stress and tension

Diagnosis of most tension-type headaches, are based on a person’s medical history as well as a complete and comprehensive physical examination. It is understood that no further diagnostic studies are needed for these people who present with normal neurological examination findings and are otherwise healthy.

On the contrary, people with chronic tension-type headache, must undergo a CT scan and an MRI, regardless of what their neurological examination findings are. Although this medically advanced imaging may rarely help in diagnosing a specific type of headache syndrome, it may definitely prove invaluable in excluding other causes of headaches. Moreover, it is essential that tests like thyroid function studies, complete blood cell count, and metabolic screening also be performed to ascertain the cause of the headache.

Causes of headache and stress

The onset of tension-type headaches is generally associated with stress or upsetting emotional situations. However, studies involving these factors have not been shown to lead to muscle contraction or reduced blood flow to the head. Nonetheless, people may suffer from tenderness of the muscles surrounding the head region. Therefore, it can safely be assumed that tension-type headaches are not a result of sustained muscle contraction.

According to existing evidence, which is also the most convincing; deliberation of the issue has led the researchers to conclude that a central nervous system dysfunction is the underlying cause of most tension-type headaches. As a consequence, muscle aches during tension-type headaches are thought to be a result of increased sensitivity of the nervous system. Moreover, these muscle pains are a result of occasional or long-term imbalances in brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, enkephalins).

Studies have revealed that some people with primary headache disorders may respond to medications that are designed to specifically target and influence serotonin levels in the brain. Positive response is generally seen in people suffering primarily from migraines or cluster headaches. On the contrary, people who are not afflicted with migraine or cluster headaches do not respond positively to serotonin-targeted drugs.

Similarly, there is a possibility that people with chronic tension-type headaches may also have neurochemical imbalances in their body. In fact, depression may also be an essential factor in a certain number of people with chronic tension headaches. Furthermore, sleep disorders could also be linked to serotonin depletion.

Headache medication

Prescription-strength pain relievers may be given once the doctor has a better understanding of a person’s headache as well as the various other coexisting medical conditions that a patient may present with. However, care must be taken to prevent people from becoming dependent on strong narcotic drugs, especially when headaches are not a one-time thing but tend to recur at regular intervals.

For headaches, doctors may first prescribe pain relievers like:

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) Triptans Ergots Anti-nausea medications Butalbital combinations Opiates

However, pain that cannot be controlled with pain relievers, doctors may prescribe preventive therapy such as:

Cardiovascular drugs (Beta blockers, Calcium channel blockers and antihypertensive drugs) Antidepressants Anti-seizure drugs Cyproheptadine Botulinum toxin type A (Botox)

————-Article————————————————————–

Headache medication is one of the top headache treatments that almost everyone has used at one time or another to find pain relief. About 90 percent of men and 95 percent of women will suffer from a headache during one year and that can add up to a lot of headache medication being sold. Headache medication is popular because it works fast, within the first 15 to 30 minutes, and can provide instant relief for headaches that can interrupt your day.

The Most Popular Headache Medication

Over the counter and nonprescription drugs is the most popular headache medication, as you do not need to visit a doctor to purchase them. However, you need to be aware of the side effects associate with medication and what medication it can and cannot be taken with.

All of the important information can be found on the label and you need to make sure you are not allergic or have any other type of reaction from taking the medication. Many times individuals will experience an upset stomach.

It is important that you follow the dosage instructions as the body can only handle so much of the medication before it becomes damaged. Certain pain relief medication can damage your kidneys and liver if taken too much. If you have any questions you should speak with the pharmacist or your doctor.

Different Headaches

There are two main categories that headaches can be broken into, primary and secondary headaches, though there are many other types of headaches that fall in these two categories.

The more severe headaches including tension headaches, cluster headaches and migraines are all primary headaches. Other headaches that occur because of an illness or reaction to a medication are known as a secondary headache as they are not the main reason for the illness but instead are a symptom.

Headache Causes

Sleeping disorders, insomnia, stress, medication, color, odors, weather changes, emotional distress, foods, allergies, and panic attacks can all cause headaches. There are many other triggers but since no two people have the same headache cause it is very difficult to determine the correct treatment. You need to uncover what causes your headaches and then try a few treatments until you find the most effective one.

There are some extremely painful headaches that cannot be treated with over the counter medication, as this medication is not strong enough. A treatment used for migraines and some tension headaches include an injection or using prescription medication which many times is just a stronger version of the over the counter medication. If you are taking headache medication then it is important that you do not abuse the medication and instead try to determine and avoid what triggers your headaches.

Stress is a big influence on a person’s health.

Some products claim they can fight stress or even cure it, arthritis , and joint pain. There may not be a way to cure the pain but there are some products that can help with the pain. Some need prescriptions to obtain the medication and some you can buy over the counter.

Migraine is one of the most painful and debilitating conditions a person may suffer from and what is worse, there is not much you can do about it. Migraine headaches are often caused by the changes in the shape and size of the blood vessels that are found in the head. The blood vessels may expand or an inflammation may occur in the tissues that are found in that area.

As to what exactly causes this to happen in such an unsystematic way, no one knows yet. Ongoing researches about the underlying causes of migraines have not yielded much and debates are still going on. Some specialists believe that migraine headaches may be caused by the constriction in the blood vessel, particularly in the electronic changes in the vessels that are similar with what happens during seizures. Others feel that migraines are actually hereditary and people with history of migraines in the family will most likely suffer from the problem.

A migraine headache should not be confused with the common headache, which a person may suffer from every now and then. They are poles different from one another. The migraine headache, for instance can last from four to 72 hours while the common headache, or what is commonly referred to by medical practitioners as tension headaches, can last only for a few hours.

Pain is also more localized with the migraine headache, often occurring on the sides of the head while tension headaches can encompass the entire head area. Another difference is the intensity of the pain.

Tension headaches are milder and duller in comparison while migraine headaches can be really severe, accompanied by pounding throbbing pain that only increases. Migraine headaches can also be accompanied by other physical problems such as sensitivity to light, sound and odors as well as nausea and vomiting.

Migraine does not announce itself in a set of early symptoms. The recurring headaches just happen, often catching the person by surprise. There is however one kind where in the person may see a visual hallucination, called an aura, before the actual migraine headache occurs. This kind is called the classic migraine headache.

The classic migraine headache is a lot different from what specialists call the common headaches, which occurs without any warning whatsoever. There is also the complicated migraines, which may be a manifestation of more serious medical problems in the nervous system. Often, this type migraine headache is accompanied by speech, movement and motor irregularities.

Derived from a French word which means “half a head,” the term migraine certainly captures the painful experience. In most cases of migraine, the pain affects only one side of the head. This one-sided pain soon becomes a dull throbbing before becoming a full-blown migraine attack. While most people, including popular celebrity and historical figures like Elvis Presley, Napoleon, and Julius Caesar, experience migraine, a lot are still unclear on what migraine is and its possible causes.

Migraine is…

More than just an episode of severe headache, migraine is a neurological disease that usually has its causes in the vascular system. The over-distended arteries on the outside of the skull are thought to be the root of migraine attacks given the pulsating and throbbing quality of pain commonly associated with blood flow. Migraine attacks persist for up to four to 72 hours depending on the severity and intensity.

This brain inflammation causes nerve endings to release pain neurotransmitters that send chemical messages of pain throughout your body. The over-production of the neurotransmitter serotonin causes the blood vessels in the brain to widen which stimulates pain receptors in the brain.

Symptoms of migraine include nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal discomfort, increased sensitivity to light, and irritability to noise. Some people suffering from migraine also report seeing a kind of aura or floating light flashes prior to an attack. Other common precursors of migraine attacks include numbness, speech problem, and temporary hearing impairment.

Some of the most common causes of migraine include anxiety, menstruation, stress, loud noises, bright lights, and particular food items depending on the person.

Tips on relieving migraine

While doctors often recommend pain medications like paracetamol, codeine, aspirin, ibuprofen, and diclofenac, these drugs only succeed in controlling the symptoms. These medications are unable to treat the underlying problem or prevent the incidence of migraine attacks. While migraine is a common condition, there is no reason to bear and suffer. Below are some ways on giving yourself some migraine pain relief:

Eat a healthy low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet.

Carbohydrates cause your glucose levels in the blood rise quickly, hence, interfering with the normal functions of neurotransmitters such as serotonin. Due to this, migraine attacks become more frequent and are often prolonged. While most people will frown at eating a high-fat diet, the key here is to consume healthy fats and oils. Healthy fats boost Omega-3 fatty acids which facilitates normal blood flow and prevents distended arteries.

Consume foods rich in Vitamin B.

The Vitamin B group is beneficial in narrowing the arteries or vasoconstriction. It also prevents blood platelet dumping which can occur during migraine attacks. Leafy greens and legumes are good sources of this vitamin. Taking supplements of Vitamin B is also a good idea if you are not getting enough of it in your diet.

Taking lots of rest and reducing stress.

Stress and anxiety are among the leading triggers of migraine attacks. Resting and practicing stress management techniques can reduce the intensity of a migraine attack and even prevent recurrence.

We are all affected by stress at some level or another, though we don’t like to admit it. Stress can be positive when it helps you achieve your goals, or implement a change in your lifestyle. But it’s obviously negative when it results in anxiety, depression and illness. This article can help you identify, prevent and deal with stress.

CAUSES OF STRESS
Most common causes of stress are:

Work-related: This includes deadlines, overload of work, conflicts with the boss or co-workers, job insecurity, lack of recognition etc. Money-related: Financial crisis, credit card debt, mortgage, loss of job or just lack of money to do the things you really want Relationship-related: Lack of communication, understanding and trust with your partner, parents, kids or close friends General lack of fulfillment: Unfulfilled dreams and ambitions; failure in job or relationships Attitudes that cause stress: Certain traits and ways of seeing the world can cause stress. E.g. Pessimism, perfectionism, addictions, poor communication, anger, obsessing and other such negative behavior.

SYMPTOMS OF STRESS
One or more of the following symptoms could mean that you are going through stress:

Headaches: Certain types of headaches can be related to stress. More frequent colds or flu: There’s an inverse relationship between stress and immunity, so if you’re under too much stress, you may be getting sick more often. Sleep problems: There are many ways that stress affects sleep. Too much stress can rob you of sleep and make the sleep you get less restorative. General anxiety: Anxiety does serve an important function for survival, but if you’re feeling anxious much of the time, it could be because you have too many stressors in your life. Fuzzy thinking: Your body’s stress response pumps your body with hormones that make it possible for you to fight or flee quickly. But when triggered in excess, this stress response can actually cause you to think less quickly. Feelings of frustration: If you’re faced with many demands at once, the natural result for many people is increased frustration and irritability. Lowered libido: If you’re too tired for sex, or can’t seem to find the time for your partner, this can be due to stress in your life as well.

MANAGEMENT OF STRESS
Once you know what causes your stress, the obvious thing is to avoid the cause. But it’s not as simple as that. We can’t eliminate difficult situations from our lives, so we must learn how to deal with them. Few tips and attitudes:

Let go of the past: Forgive everyone who had said or done things that hurt you. Maybe they didn’t mean to. Ask forgiveness for the things you have done to others. Make peace with your past. Also stop living in the ‘good old days’ – they were good because you lived in the present then. Stop worrying about the future: Most of the things we worry about never actually happen. On the other hand, setting goals and planning for a better tomorrow can actually help reduce stress. Be grateful: There are hundreds of things you can be grateful for – waking up alive; being healthy; having the senses to enjoy the beauty of life; food and water; a place to live, clothes, job; people you love, people who love you; your ability to read, write, create, think and more… This is only possible when you live in the present and acknowledge the good things in your life, right now. It’s difficult for someone with this attitude to get stressed out easily. Differentiate between situations and problems: Situations are things you cannot control or change e.g. weather, traffic, sickness, death, people, law, the world. The only choices you have are accept them or fight with them. Problems are things you can control or change e.g. health, relationships, skills, job, your attitudes, yourself. For me, this has been the single most powerful strategy for a happy life! Take time out: Sometimes getting away, even for a short while, can help change the focus. Take time to read, breathe, meditate, pray, exercise, or whatever provides a break from the stress. For me, it’s swimming, long walks, a good book or writing something that can help enhance lives.

Some quoets on Stress:

The time to relax is when you don’t have time for it. ~Attributed to both Jim Goodwin and Sydney J. Harris Stress is nothing more than a socially acceptable form of mental illness. ~Richard Carlson For fast-acting relief, try slowing down. ~Lily Tomlin The mark of a successful man is one that has spent an entire day on the bank of a river without feeling guilty about it. ~Author Unknown One of the symptoms of an approaching nervous breakdown is the belief that one’s work is terribly important. ~Bertrand Russell Stress is an ignorant state. It believes that everything is an emergency. ~Natalie Goldberg, Wild Mind Don’t underestimate the value of Doing Nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering. ~Pooh’s Little Instruction Book, inspired by A.A. Milne There is more to life than increasing its speed. ~Mohandas K. Gandhi A crust eaten in peace is better than a banquet partaken in anxiety. ~Aesop, Fables Slow down and everything you are chasing will come around and catch you. ~John De Paola How beautiful it is to do nothing, and then to rest afterward. ~Spanish Proverb Stress is poison. ~Agavé Powers It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly unless one has plenty of work to do. ~Jerome K. Jerome, The Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow Sometimes a headache is all in your head. Relax. ~Hartman Jule Tension is who you think you should be. Relaxation is who you are. ~Chinese Proverb Stress is an admission of weakness, a cry of defeat to the world. ~Carrie Latet
