Whilst headaches are an unfortunate common occurance for many people, once you have an understanding of their causes, the remedy for curing them does not have to be medicinal, but a natural method that will provide your whole being with benefits beyond that as a cure for headache pain.

In general, it is difficult to pinpoint the precise cause of an infrequently occurring muscle tension or vascular headache, but sometimes the anatomy of the headache—how it starts, where the pain is felt, and how long it lasts—provides valuable clues about its source.

Originally, it was accepted that there were just two simple explanations to thew source of headache pain. Vascular, such as migraines, occurred when blood vessels that supplied the brain and muscles of the head and neck dilated or were constricted. Tension headaches were thought to result from the tensing and contracting of muscles of the head, face, and neck in response to physical stress, such as injury or emotional distress.

However, it is now understood that there are complex chemical changes in the brain associated with pain. Tension headaches are associated with neurochemicals in the brain —varying levels of serotonin, endorphins and other chemicals that serve as neurotransmitters (substances that nerves use to send messages to one another) helping nerves to communicate.

These chemical changes observed in headache sufferers may cause, or be caused by, muscle tension. It is possible that tensed muscles in the neck and scalp may trigger a headache in someone with altered neurochemical levels or, on the other hand, the neck and scalp muscles may be tensing in response to these neurochemical changes. The rise and fall of these chemicals are thought to not only activate pain pathways to the brain but also interfere with the brain’s own capacity to suppress the pain. By adopting the benefits of massage therapy, muscle tension can be eased thus reducing the causes of headaches.

As headaches often result from or involve pain referred from problems associated with the bones and muscles in the neck, shoulder, and back, massage focusing on the cervical spine (the vertebrae in the neck behind the skull) can help to relieve headache pain. Shiatsu massage, a Japanese technique in which pressure is applied with the fingers, thumbs and palm to acupuncture points, also may help to reduce headache pain. Another therapeutic touch technique that seems to help sufferers is known as the Trager Approach. This techniques uses massage to literally stretch the body’s muscles and joint in order to enhance relaxation.

Some tension headaches may be relieved by a specific form of massage therapy called trigger point therapy (TrP). Trigger point therapy is the application of pressure to specific points such as along the trapezius muscles (the muscles extending from the base of the skull to mid-back located along the spine) and sternocleidomastoid muscles (muscles on either side of the neck). This pressure interrupts the nerve signals that not only cause the headache pain but also create the trigger point. This massage therapy aims to relieve pain and to re-educate the muscles so they assume healthy positions and postures that do not generate pain. The beneficial effect of massage therapies to manipulate the body’s muscular structure is now a recognised method of natural treatment for the causes of headaches. Whether a full soothing body massage or therapy concentrating on the back and neck, facial or head, the techniques used can reduce stress levels and improve blood circulation leaving the person feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Massage has got its name and fame since years as each and every individual enjoy the touch by hands. It is sure to bring about a change in aches and pains of the body. Pregnancy is the period where a lot of hormone changes take place. This effect in shown in body with a lot of discomfort and pain in particular areas of the body such as hips, stomach, breast etc.

The most important part of pregnancy is labor and it seems to be a night mare in case of most of the carrying mothers. But with pregnancy massage the labor could be made easy by decreasing the labor pain.

Benefits of pregnancy massage

Pregnancy massage has been found to reduce stress, decrease swelling in the arms and legs, and relieve aches and pains in muscles and joints.

It’s a popular complementary therapy during pregnancy for back pain, when choices for pain relief, such as medication, are often limited.

Not only can massage be physically beneficial, but the human touch can be comforting and provide emotional support during pregnancy.

Massage therapy has been found to reduce anxiety and depression.

Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts during pregnancy, such as backaches, a stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches, edema, and sore, swollen ankles and feet.

Massage increases local and general blood circulation, which brings more oxygen and nutrients to the cells of both the mother and fetus. This means greater vitality and less fatigue for mom and better nourishment for her baby.

Massage stimulates glandular secretions, which helps stabilize hormone levels.

Massage can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes mom is experiencing.

It relaxes tense muscles and tones loose muscles, and can also increase muscular flexibility. Flexibility will be most helpful during the last trimester and during the birth itself.

Massage helps to soothe and relax nervous tension, which helps the mother sleep more easily and more deeply. Incidentally, doctors all agree that a relaxed mother will have a happier, healthier pregnancy and possibly an easier childbirth experience, too.

Precautions

Many massage therapists do not recommend massage in the first trimester.

Also, women with certain health conditions may not be able to have pregnancy massage.

It’s best to consult your doctor and a certified pregnancy massage therapist.

Pregnancy Exercises

Pregnancy is the most wonderful period of your life; but it is also a great challenge for your body… You have to be prepared to go through the birth moment when you make a lot of effort and you need a lot of strength. Pregnancy is not all about being extremely careful with yourself and sleeping and eating a lot; physical exercise are a ‘must do’ during this period…you and your baby need them.

Walk this way’. Walking is one of the greatest methods to strengthen your organism during pregnancy. It is the best way of being and feeling active: it stimulates equally the entire organism, it doesn’t require any special equipment and it is a sure method that doesn’t harm the fetus.

Just keep swimming: Swimming involves a greater preoccupation and a lot more time to do it. On the other hand, it is more relaxing than walking. With the doctor’s permission you can even go daily to the swimming pool.

Avoid ridding and skiing! No matter how much experience you might have, there is always a chance to fall down.

These exercises will only help you to go easily through the moment of birth, to maintain a healthy body for you and your little one. Keep up the good work!

Unfortunately, almost everyone has suffered the pain of a headache at some time. They can last for a few hours up to several days, and sometimes involve symptoms such as sensitivity to light and nausea. They can seriously impact daily life when they occur frequently or for an extended period of time.

A great hidden benefit of massage therapy is that headaches are relieved whilst the side effects that are often accompanied by prescription medication are avoided.

Since many tension and migraine headaches are accompanied by neck pain, headache sufferers find that manual therapies such as massage offer relief from headache pain and related symptoms. Because massage therapy relaxes tense muscles, relieves muscle spasms, improves blood flow and aids relaxation, it can be helpful for relieving the pain of both tension and vascular headaches.

The most common types of headaches are muscle tension and vascular headaches. Muscle tension headaches produce dull, constant pain on both sides of the head and may also involve an aching neck or sensitive scalp. They generally start slowly and can last from hours to days.

Another term for muscle tension headaches is muscle contraction headaches due to the tightening of the groups of muscles around the area of the head, face and neck that is the cause of the pain. This is why tension headache sufferers often describe their pain as a “vice-like grip” at their temples or as tightening bands around the forehead or along the base of the skull.

Vascular headaches are the ones many people describe as “pounding” or “throbbing.” They occur when the blood vessels that supply the brain and the muscles in the head swell and constrict. Vascular headache pain intensifies with physical activity and typically lasts from 4 to 72 hours. It may be associated with other symptoms such as vision problems, extreme sensitivity to light, and nausea. Migraines, cluster headaches and headaches that result from high blood pressure are all examples of the vascular type.

The relief that is created by massage therapy for both types of these headaches includes easing muscle tension and spasms, releasing shortened muscles plus the important effect of the relaxation of tension that is held in the muscles of the head, shoulders and neck. When muscle tension eases, there is less pressure on the nerves and blood vessels that supply them. Oxygen-rich blood circulation improves, which also relieves pain. Massage therapy will not only assist the body’s muscles in relaxing but it will also have the effect of reducing the anxiety and mental stress that can cause or worsen headaches in the first place.

Regular, ongoing massage therapy can also help to prevent headaches by helping to reduce overall stress and the muscle tension that can trigger headache pain and by helping to maintain emotional balance.

Millions of people around the world suffer from chronic headache, and I am one of them. Fortunately, I have found therapies that allow me to cope with this condition and ease my suffering. One of the major treatments I rely on is regular massage therapy here in Tampa. Massage has been my salvation in 33629.

Types of Chronic Headache

Chronic headache can occur for about 15 days in every month, staying several days in a row. It is important to ask for a medical work up to rule out any other underlying medical condition that may be causing it. Knowing that what you have is simply chronic headache will in itself give great relief.

The four categories of chronic headache are chronic migraine, chronic tension headache, hemicrania continua and a new type of daily persistent headache.

Chronic migraine headache may be one sided, could be pulsating or throbbing, and could be made worse with movement.
Chronic migraine sufferers may experience nausea or vomiting, as well as sensitivity to bright lights and noise.

Chronic tension headache is felt on both sides of the head, could be a pressing or constricting pain, and may also include nausea and sensitivity to bright lights and noise. The new type of persistent daily headache observed by researchers is similar to chronic tension headache in all respects, but stays for days at a time.

Hemicrania continua, on the other hand, is not only daily but presents periods of intense pain within days of moderate pan. The headache is accompanied by a runny nose or nasal congestion, swollen or droopy eyelids and red or teary eyes.

I experience all four types of chronic headaches. The good news is that all of them are equally alleviated by the massage therapy recommended by my Tampa medical specialist.

Massage Therapy for Chronic Headache

Chronic headache is often caused by muscular tension or vascular swelling and constriction. Massage relaxes the muscles, muscle spasms are relieved and blood circulation is normalized. This, in turn, frees up the blood vessels and brings down swelling.

Whoever my massage therapist of the moment is in 33629, I let her know of my condition so that she can customize the massage according to my special needs. Aside from specialized massage for my headaches, though, I also enjoy the Swedish massage given by my Tampa therapist. The gentle lengthwise strokes along my muscles really soothe me. On the other hand, there is also an intense deep tissue massage given by my Tampa masseuse that digs out hidden knots in my muscles.

Another area where massage really helps my chronic headache is with my fitness regimen. Exercise is a crucial part of chronic headache treatment but without proper preparation and support, exertion itself may also trigger more headaches. Massage therapy is, therefore, a requirement of my Tampa trainer. To help my body before and after workouts, I undergo sports massage with my Tampa therapist.

When I got pregnant, I thought it would be a problem. I was so happy to learn that I would not have to stop my massage therapy sessions with my Tampa therapist. In fact, there was a specific pregnancy massage introduced to me by my Tampa masseuse. It helped me not only with my headaches but with all the other discomforts of pregnancy, as well.

Not only is there a massage therapy for my every need according to my Tampa bodywork specialists, but I can also get it in many convenient locations. My massage therapist recommended a place in Downtown Tampa. She said I could also get a good massage in their branch in South Tampa, and the same massage service in Hyde Park. I could even get the same massage if I happen to be in Macdill AFB.

It is such a comfort knowing I will always have accessible massage therapy to relieve my chronic headache.

Pregnancy provides unique physical and emotional changes in women that results from the increased weight, shifting centre of gravity, changing posture and gait and the huge hormonal adjustments. As a result mums-to-be can face a whole raft of physical conditions such as back pain, sciatic discomfort, headaches, swollen legs and ankles. When coupled with hormonal variations, nausea and emotional stress then attention is required.

Prenatal massage from a qualified and experienced massage therapist aims to alleviate these and other pregnancy-related conditions.

Benefits of Pregnancy Massage

Massage is considered to have many health benefits including stimulating blood flow and the lymphatic system, improving flexibility to muscles and enhancing the mobility of joints. As pregnancy progresses, then the body adjusts to a changing centre of gravity caused by the baby’s increasing weight. The change in posture puts increased strain on the legs, hips and back. Massage improves the flexibility and functionality of the muscles, which assists the woman to carry the extra weight along with some of the aches and pains associated with pregnancy.

The claimed benefits of pregnancy include:

- reduced stress through relaxation and pain relief
- maintenance/awareness of good posture
- relief of muscular tension and spasms (in particular in the hips, legs, back and neck)
- reduction of stress on weight-bearing joints.
- assistance in pain relief for any sciatic pain that frequently arises during pregnancy
- reduced oedema in hands and feet
- medication free headache relief
- improved energy levels and reduced fatigue

Even just taking time out for oneself during pregnancy can be emotionally rewarding, particularly if there is emotional support through the nurturing touch of the therapist.

Studies from the Touch Research Institute have indicated that pregnancy massage provides more than just physical relief for the mum-to-be. A group of pregnant women were provided with either massage or relaxation therapy during a five-week study. The researchers found that massage group had fewer complications during labour and delivery. In addition, they also had a reduction in stress, improved sleep quality and less back pain than the relaxation therapy group.

Massage Cautions

Massage is normally safe during pregnancy for most women. However if the women is experiencing any of the following conditions or symptoms then massage is contraindicated.

- any discharge of blood or water
- contagious illness/fever/vomiting
- pre-eclampsia
- high blood pressure
- abdominal pain
- blood clotting disorders

This list is not considered to be complete. If you have any concerns about having a massage during pregnancy then you should contact your health care professional. Indeed some massage therapists will not perform pregnancy massage without the approval of their doctor and others will not massage during the first trimester.

In choosing your prenatal massage therapist then please make sure that they are suitably trained and experienced. Just because a therapists offers pregnancy massage in their brochure or website does not mean that they have the necessary training and skills. Some therapists use pregnancy massage tables that have a hole for the belly, however these are generally not recommended by experienced prenatal massage therapists as the lack of support causes additional muscle strain on the belly and stress on the lower back

It is important to provide all relevant information about your condition to the therapist during pre-massage discussion. The massage therapist can then adjust your pregnancy massage to make the rewarding and relieving experience you deserve.

Chronic headache plagues millions of people throughout the world. It is not something to take lightly because it causes much suffering, lowers productivity and decreases income. There are ways to alleviate the pain of chronic headaches, though, and one of the most effective therapies is massage therapy. Chronic headache sufferers can avail of massage therapy from professional massage therapists at a reputable clinic in 4th Street Downtown St. Petersburg and Tampa 33607.

Some people experience chronic headaches for 15 days out of every month. Each episode lasts several consecutive days. Before anything else, anyone who has these episodes should ask for a medical work up in order to rule out any medical condition that may be causing the headaches. Finding out that you have no other ailment except chronic headaches will by itself already bring you some measure of relief.

There are four types of chronic headaches. These are chronic migraine, chronic tension headache, hemicrania continua and daily persistent headache.

Chronic migraine headache is usually characterized by throbbing or pulsating pain that stays in one side of the head. It is usually worsened by movement, noise and bright light. The patient often feels nauseous and may be vomiting.

Chronic tension headache is usually characterized by constricting or pressing pain that is on both sides of the head. It is also worsened by noise and bright light. The patient could also be nauseous.

Daily persistent headache is almost exactly the same as chronic tension headache except for the fact that the headache stays for several consecutive days at a time.

Hemicrania continua is characterized by the presence of nasal congestion or a runny nose, red teary eyes and swollen droopy eyelids along with moderate to intense pain that occurs daily. The pain intensifies for certain periods within days of moderate pain.

Some people experience all four types of headaches in alternate episodes. Massage therapy can, however, be used to address all of them. Chronic headaches are often caused by stress that leads to muscular tension and vascular swelling and constriction. Since massage therapy relaxes the muscles, tension is released and spasms are eased. The circulation of blood is restored to normal and the blood vessels are decongested. Vascular swelling is brought down.

It is important to let your professional massage therapist know about your specific condition so that he or she can customize the massage session accordingly. Professionally trained massage therapists will know what specific techniques to use for the treatment of chronic headaches. It does not matter whether you are having Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, sports massage therapy, trigger point massage therapy, cranial sacral massage therapy, reflexology massage therapy or even pregnancy massage therapy. All these modalities can be customized to meet your specific health needs.

Regular exercise also helps ease chronic headaches in the long term. If the chronic headache sufferer launches into an exercise regimen without proper preparation, though, this could backfire and even cause more headaches. It is necessary to prepare the body first through sports massage therapy. This should be maintained all throughout the exercise program because post-workout massage is just as important as pre-workout massage.

Massage therapy is effective as a treatment not only for chronic headaches but also for other ailments and conditions as well. It is fortunate that there are reputable massage clinics in almost every location, including St. Pete. You can get Swedish massage therapy, deep tissue massage therapy, sports massage therapy, trigger point massage therapy, cranial sacral massage therapy, reflexology massage therapy and pregnancy massage therapy from professional massage therapists at a Massage Envy clinic in 4th Street Downtown St. Petersburg and Tampa 33607.

Almost everyone has experienced excruciating headache at some point in their lives. It can leave you debilitated and totally unproductive. Just imagine how difficult it is for people who suffer from chronic headache. It is fortunate that regular therapeutic body massage services have been found to be effective in helping eliminate such chronic headaches. You can get regular therapeutic body massage services given by professional massage therapists, covering therapeutic back massage services, therapeutic foot massage services, therapeutic reflexology massage services, therapeutic deep tissue massage services, therapeutic sports massage services and therapeutic Swedish massage services, from reputable therapeutic body massage clinics in Charlotte NC.

There is a huge difference between the ordinary headaches that most people experience once in a while and chronic headache. Chronic headache can be experienced for 15 days or half of each month, and each episode can last for several consecutive days. That means you sleep with the headache and wake up with the headache for several days. Sometimes the pain can be so intense that it even prevents one from falling asleep.

People suffering from chronic headache should immediately consult a neurologist for a medical work up in order to rule out any other medical condition that may be causing the pain. This is very important because chronic headaches may just be the symptoms of very serious and life threatening illnesses such as tumors. Once you confirm that what you have is really just chronic headache, you will surely feel relieved. This still does not alleviate the pain, though.

There are four different types of chronic headache and these are chronic migraine, chronic tension headache, hemicrania continua and a new type called daily persistent headache.

Chronic migraine headache can be identified by pain felt on only one side of the head. The pain may be throbbing or pulsating and is often worsened by the patient’s movement, bright light and noise. The patient may feel nauseous and may be vomiting.

Chronic tension headache can be identified by pain felt on two sides of the head. The pain may be constricting or pressing and is also often worsened by bright light and noise. The patient may feel nauseous and may be vomiting.

Persistent daily headache is a new category identified by researchers. It may be very similar to chronic tension headache in almost all ways except for the fact that persistent daily headache stays for many days for each episode, as the name implies.

Hemicrania continua is experienced daily like persistent daily headache, with the pain alternating from moderate to intense within each day. The main difference between hemicrania continua and the other types of chronic headache is that it is accompanied by nasal congestion, a runny nose, swollen and droopy eyelids, and red teary eyes.

All types of chronic headaches are caused by muscular tension as well as vascular constriction and swelling. Massage therapy can help ease all types of chronic headaches because it relaxes muscle tension and releases muscle spasms. Massage therapy also normalizes blood circulation, thereby freeing up constricted blood vessels and bringing down any vascular swelling.

Therapeutic body massage services provide much needed relief for desperate sufferers of chronic headache. Even pregnant women continue to experience chronic headache but are not allowed to take strong pain relief medication. Therapeutic pregnancy massage services can help ease their pain. For those who are not pregnant, there are various therapeutic body massage services to choose from, such as therapeutic back massage services, therapeutic foot massage services, therapeutic reflexology massage services, therapeutic deep tissue massage services, therapeutic sports massage services and therapeutic Swedish massage services. You can even get gift cards for therapeutic body massage services in Charlotte NC.

What is a pregnancy massage or prenatal massage?

Pregnancy massage or prenatal massage are generic terms used to describe a variety of conditions and treatments performed to help alleviate the signs and symptoms associated with pregnancy.

Conditions like: Sciatica, headaches, low back pain, swelling in the extremities, muscle tension and sleep disturbances can all be part of being pregnant. An RMT can work to address all these conditions.

Why use an RMT for pregnancy massage or prenatal massage?

A BC RMT has 3000 hours of training. They have specific training in the physiology and anatomy of pregnancy. There are specific techniques that are used for different stages of the pregnancy cycle.

The bigger question is, “What RMT is a specialist in pregnancy massage?” Technically, RMTs cannot say they specialize in any one treatment or technique. This is a regulatory requirement of our governing body, the CMTBC.

To work with this regulation you will see RMTs use words like: “focus”, “area of treatment” or “training in”. To find an RMT that works best for you I suggest looking for a personal referral and research that RMT online.

Here are some questions I suggest asking:

1. Do you do pregnancy massage or prenatal massage?
2. Do you have body pillows, electric table, etc…?
3. Can I read more about you on the web?
4. How many pregnancy or prenatal treatments did you do last week?
5. Can I talk to any of the women you treated for pregnancy?
6. Are you a Dr. Voder licensed Manual Lymph drainage therapist? (These RMTs have post graduate training and should be used if you have swelling in the extremities)

The answers to these questions will give you enough information to make a decision.

What are the benefits of a pregnancy massage?

There are so many benefits to having a pregnancy massage. At no time in your life will you undergo so much change in your body over such a short period of time. Aches, pains and body changes can be greatly decreased when you consult an RMT.

Treatments that respond well to pregnancy massage are: Sciatica , headaches, muscle tension, swelling in the extremities and low back pain .

Clients report better sleep patterns and over all feeling of being relaxed and more connected to their body.

When receiving a pregnancy massage, how should I be positioned?

Positioning is the most important part of a treatment. You want to take in account how far along the pregnancy is, the further along it is the more you will need to look at supporting the body.

In general, sideline is best. This is because it allows the most amount of modification to the body position.

Resting on your stomach puts too much pressure on your abdomen and breasts. There are pregnancy tables that have a hole cut where the abdomen is and this is replaced with a stretchy fabric that makes a hammock for your growing belly to rest on.

There is some controversy about these tables because depending on the tension on the hammock it can lead to not enough support for your belly. This can put undue stress on your abdominal and pelvic ligaments. This can be very serious depending on how far you’re a long and if it has been a difficult pregnancy or not. I highly suggest consulting with your massage therapist to discuss this issue.

Resting on your back can position your uterus to put pressure on the returning veins from the lower extremity. This again needs to be discussed as your pregnancy progresses.

Precautions for pregnancy massage.

Make sure the RMT does a thorough history and assessment before the treatment begins. Clients tend to want to rush to the treatment and they sometime over look very serious contraindications for treatment. Please make sure to discuss everything about your pregnancy with your RMT.

Some precautions for pregnancy massage are: Diabetes, miscarriages and varicosities in the lower extremity.

Nicole also has a deep interest in Pre and Post Natal Massage Therapy, treating many of the common dysfunctions that plague a woman while she is pregnant. There are many physical aches and pains that your Midwife or OBGYN may not know how to treat. By using muscle energy techniques, patient education and manual therapy she can help to bring relief from these symptoms.

Throbbing pain. Vice-like pinching. Pressure. Tension. There are many ways to describe a headache and recent research has shown headaches to be more than just a mere annoyance. Headaches are, well, a major headache for the United States where 157 million workdays – accounting for almost $13 billion!! – are lost each year due to missed work caused by headaches. Fortunately, recent research has also shown that regular massage therapy can help ease the intensity, duration, and number of tension-type headaches, a pain that 78 percent of American will experience in their lifetime.

The effectiveness of massage for preventing and lessening the pain caused by headaches is another reason why people should use massage to improve their health and quality of life. But this research could turn out to be a Godsend for those who don’t just suffer from infrequent headaches, but, instead, chronic tension-type headaches.

There are three types of tension-type headaches: episodic, a stress-induced headache that can be treated with over-the-counter medicines and usually only occurs once a month, or less; frequent, which occurs 2 – 15 times a month and is usually associated with symptoms of migraine and can’t be effectively alleviated through medication; and chronic, where headaches occur more than 15 times a month and can even be daily or continuous over many days. Researchers showed that massage was very helpful in alleviating the seemingly endless pain of those suffering from this last type, chronic tension-type headache.

While the exact cause of these chronic, tension-type headaches has not been scientifically proven, researchers believe that chemical imbalances and muscles tightening in the scalp and neck are primary causes. Massage already has been proven to boost the immune system, relieve stress, and loosen muscles, so it seems evident that massage would be able to relieve these symptoms and thus reduce chronic headaches.

However, it wasn’t until 2002, in an article published in the American Journal of Public Health, that researchers actually conducted a scientific study on the effects of Massage on chronic tension-type headaches. Those suffering from the condition were first monitored for a four-week period to gauge the duration, strength, and frequency of their headaches. They were then treated with two, thirty-minute massages each week over the following four weeks. The massages focused on specific areas of the neck and head, and their headache symptoms were monitored during this period. The results were staggering.

Patients who were experiencing headaches 5, 6, 7 times a week began to see the frequency of their headaches decrease to 2 and 3 times a week. The duration of the patients’ headaches, which had averaged 8 hours before massages were administered, fell to 4 hours. And while one patient experienced an increase in headache intensity in the period after massages were given, the other participants in the study saw the intensity of their headaches decrease, some nearly 50 percent.

The researchers noted that more study is needed in order to increase the amount of participants and strength of the results, as well as determine what effect stretching and relaxation techniques also used during the study had on the improved conditions of the chronic headache sufferers.

However, the results of the study were dramatic, especially given the serious conditions that chronic tension-type headache sufferers can develop if their pain goes unrelieved. These conditions include: insomnia, depression, weight loss, dizziness, nausea, and other emotional problems. Sufferers of chronic, tension-type headaches can also become addicted to painkillers and antidepressants. If the research from this study holds true, massage would offer them a drug-free alternative to deal with their pain.

President Barack Obama recently noted that acupuncture has been shown to alleviate chronic headaches and could be used as an alternative to more invasive, and costly, surgery/medication. He said he would let science guide him when it came to deciding what forms of therapy to include in a national healthcare plan. If alternative forms, such as acupuncture and massage, showed scientific, therapeutic results, he would pursue them. Currently millions of Americans miss work and lose money due to chronic tension-type headaches; perhaps pursuing massage would get them the therapeutic result they are no doubt looking for.
