Migraineurs would desire not to have migraines at all. If headache cannot be eliminated, decreasing the quantity of migraine incidents they suffer would absolutely be a wonderful improvement. It would be even better if it could be done without synthetic pharmacologicals.

Migraineurs, meet butterbur (Petasites hybridus). Butterbur is a bush natural to southwestern Asia, Europe, and northern Africa. It is not what’s above ground that makes it appealing though, it’s the root. Several reviews have shown that daily doses of extract of butterbur root lowered the frequency of migraine episodes by nearly 50% in virtually 80% of the participants.

Butterbur is used in Europe and Asia, but only in the last decade have American experts looked at it as a practicable herbal preventative for migraineurs. Double blind, placebo-controlled examinations accomplished in 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005 all corroborated the herb’s value.

Migraine incidence descent ranged from 37% – 62% among analysis participants, with just about no side effects. The only offshoot conveyed was inconsequential gastrointestinal upset, and that was in a small segment of both the herb and placebo groups. Butterbur is at this time considered to be safe and sound, as of this writing, to take with other migraine prescriptions. A professional should permanently be included in the evaluation to add herbal products to any treatment treatment.

Crude butterbur contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). These alkaloids are identified to be toxic in humans, mainly to the liver. When choosing butterbur, make sure the produce is labeled PA-free.

The amount of alkaloids in butterbur root is, less than 0.01% intensity. Most butterbur treatment regimens urge taking the supplement for a maximum of four to six months. If migraine regularity rises, it is nontoxic to take again for another 4-6 months, but at least a month needs to split each possibility of remedy.

Certainly If you can get hold of Buttbur you may find that it’s a great migraine headache relief for you.

Functioning up to our best capacity is a must every single day whether we like it or not. We need to perform at our finest despite difficulties. But would we still be able to deliver at our maximum level if we are experiencing a head ache? Not to mention a quite severe head ache, a migraine? Well, the answer is definitely a yes! There are a variety of methods and techniques to help one recover from a migraine attack. And by reading this article, you will know some of the most basic and simple yet very effective manner though migraine headache relief medications.

Scented oils, a good temperature, a good mood, and nice lighting may be one of the most non-drug ways to prevent the occurrence of migraine. Migraines are triggered by environmental stress and emotional complications. So, it has been suggested by numerous medical studies and organizations that relaxation and being free from problems reduce migraine attacks in patients for about seventy percent. Scented oils and fragrances relax the mind and the senses, and by doing so, endorphins or happy hormones are being released over the entire body. If these oils are massaged on the back, the neck, the arms, and the legs, more endorphins will be released. The logic here is that the happy hormones or endorphins fools the brain into thinking that the body is not experiencing stress or any external problems whatsoever. This relaxes the brain thus lowering the chances of it activating gain to develop a migraine attack.

Another very simple yet highly effective way to stop migraine is through water therapy. It has been proven that drinking water to keep the body and mind hydrated is one of the sure fire ways to control migraines. A dehydrated body causes internal stress to the different tissues and organs of the body most especially the brain which needs an adequate amount of moisture to function well. If deprived of water the brain will send pain signals which may cause one to feel thirsty. If no water is provided then most likely a migraine will take place.

So why not try out some of these useful migraine headache relief methods today. And finally see and feel that change you have been waiting for.

Tension headache is often mistaken for migraine headache due to the fact that various signs and symptoms of these varieties of headache are comparable. Nevertheless, by knowing the differences in signs and symptoms among tension and migraine headache it means it’s a lot easier to accurately diagnose the kind of headache you are experiencing. And in the event you want to care for your headaches successfully, it is beneficial to know which kind of headache you experience, tension or migraine headache. It is often likely to increase the severity of the migraine headache discomfort, as an alternative to lowering it, in the event you use treatment methods that were supposed to be used for tension headaches. Nevertheless, by diagnosing your migraine headaches appropriately you’ll have the ability to increase the results of the migraine headache therapy that will in all probability give you needed migraine relief.

Approximately sixty percent of all migraine victims will experience additional symptoms prior to any migraine headache developing. These various migraine headache symptoms will customarily strike somewhere from a few hours to a few days before the migraine headache. The different signs and symptoms can include depression, mood swings, tiredness, lowered appetite, and auras. An aura is a neurological problem that customarily influences vision, but may as well be seen as motor, sensory, or even speech troubles. Visual conditions are customarily intense flashes of light, sensitivity to light, blind spots, or zigzagging patterns of light in the visual field. Migraine headaches occur in females 75% of the time and customarily initially emerge between puberty and early adulthood. The illness will customarily disappear after the age of 50, but will every so often go on to appear in the lives of people beyond this age.

Everything that causes a migraine headache is designated a migraine headache trigger. Triggers can often be chemical compounds, environmental factors, panic, hormones, foods, and a number of other factors. Frequently observed triggers are alcohol, dehydration, and caffeine, but there are countless others. High-energy drinks, soda pop, and coffee have caffeine and will need to be avoided by many migraine sufferers. Tyramine is a chemical compound in alcoholic drinks, and in particular various beers and red wines, and may as well be a migraine trigger. To accomplish a migraine headache cure you’ll be required to get rid of any triggers that are causing your symptoms.

Although most migraine headache disorders yield a lot of pain symptoms, they are customarily not a dangerous health problem. Nevertheless, some chronic sufferers might suffer with their pain as a consequence of some unknown secondary health issue. And the way to prevent this kind of headache is to discover the primary health condition and cure it. In many cases, until the primary problem is dealt with the symptoms will continue to occur. By resolving the underlying health issue it will probably bring about a migraine headache cure. Stress or tension is a main promotional factor in the occurrence of many varieties of headache and is brought on by any environmental change that requires you to react or adjust to the circumstances. Generally, migraine victims usually do not cope with tense circumstances well.

Although nearly all people just take a few pain pills as soon as they experience a migraine headache drawing near, this might not be the better method. Besides promoting persistent pain symptoms, drugs can frequently cause possibly risky side effects or become an addiction. Natural and effective therapies for migraine headaches are less risky and are practically free from hazardous and unwanted side effects. Also, natural methods may give superior results or possibly even provide a total migraine headache cure. Nevertheless, a certain natural migraine treatment might work for one person, but not for a different person. This is the reason it is beneficial to try different treatment methods until one is discovered that works for you. Furthermore, some types of migraine headache treatment will possibly not be nice for you personally as a consequence of cost factors or other reasons. Learning the right way to deal with stress can often be a critical aspect in the alleviation of pain, but on occasion requires you to alter a few factors in your life that can sometimes be hard. These might include asking for help in tough conditions, sustaining wholesome associations with family members, maintaining calmness in volatile conditions, eating healthier, or stopping unhealthy habits like drinking alcoholic drinks or smoking cigarettes.

About 2 years ago, I was told I am going through premature menopause. My doctor put me on Norinyl 1/35 to regulate periods and prevent osteoperosis. I’ve been taking it for 2 years now. I am now having severe PMS and when I am on the placebo, beginning around day 4 or 5, I get severe headaches that nothing seems to get rid of. The headaches have been coming during placebo almost since I first started taking the pill but they are increasing in intensity now. I’m 46 and I don’t know if I should just quit taking the pill and go through menopause or if I should try to treat the other symptoms and continue with the pill. I used to take fiorinol for migraines when I was a young mother and again when I started the premenopausal symptoms. I don’t want to go through the mood swings and hotflashes again.
I guess it’s been longer than I thought. I started taking the pill at 39. I also read where the last 4 days placebo has estrogen. I haven’t been actually taking the placebo because I thought it didn’t do anything. I think I’m having estrogen withdrawals so I will take the placebo and see if it makes a difference

Here’s a little background:
I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for a large portion of my life. I was taking effexor, but found the side effects extreme and couldn’t handle it. After several years on this medication I tapered myself off and went cold turkey on no meds thinking the depression had passed. Months later it returned. I am now taking Lexapro (for about 2 weeks) and it seems to be helping with less side effects.

For the last 4 weeks I have been having severe headaches that will not quit. I have been to the ER twice and they ran CT and MRI and found nothing that would cause these and saw my doctor who gave me some drugs that seemed to help for awhile, but didn’t make them go away. I have recently been to a neurologist who diagnosed them as migraines and pretty much eliminated cluster and tension headaches based on my responses to some questions. He has put me on a tapered string of prednisone and gave me a few other drugs besides, but stated that most migraines only last 24-72 hours.

My question would be – does anyone out there have experience with migraines lasting this long? It is making my life and in turn my family’s life very difficult and is tearing us all apart. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions or other opinions as to what this is? Please I need relief! Anybody?!
I don’t have any money for expensive treatment like massage or chiropractory

When you are subjected to a migraine headache you will have two choices of therapy, pain medicine or natural therapy techniques. A large number of natural treatment techniques exist that aren’t only safe, but effective too. In fact, they can frequently be more useful than painkillers and without the danger of serious unwanted effects.

Biofeedback therapy

Biofeedback training has shown positive outcomes in terms of stopping migraine headache pain. It is not really deemed a therapy, but a guidance course that will teach a person how to control certain body functions that are typically controlled unconsciously by the human body. Learning biofeedback training can permit an individual to control body functions like blood pressure and body temperature. As soon as biofeedback therapy is learned it can be utilized to decrease or eliminate migraine headaches.

Habitual Exercise

Regular exercise can also be an enormous help for migraine sufferers. This includes both aerobic exercise such as jogging and weightlifting workouts that can build and preserve muscle tone. Nonetheless, bear in mind that once a migraine attack occurs, strenuous exercise or other similar activities can increase the symptoms. Do not exercise when you are suffering with a migraine headache.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic manipulations have been helping migraine headache sufferers for more than one hundred years. Studies have persistently revealed chiropractic manipulations to be extremely useful for relieving migraine headaches. Some research has shown helpful results in excess of 80% of sufferers. Moreover, chiropractic manipulations are very safe. You’ll often hear people declare that chiropractic treatment is harmful, but severe problems are extraordinarily uncommon as a result of chiropractic care. You will have a better chance of getting struck by lighting than suffering a severe problem due to a chiropractic manipulation.

Decrease Your Salt Consumption

If you are a migraine sufferer that likes to salt their cuisine you may want to get out of the addiction. Lots of folks add salt to almost everything they consume. It can add a whole lot of flavor to your meals, but it can also trigger migraine headache pain.

Drink Lots of Water Every Day

Dehydration can happen fast in a migraine sufferer. Many times it only requires three hours with no water to bring on a headache. Migraineurs should generally eat smaller meals more often as an alternative to larger meals infrequently. Plus, they need to be consuming enough water every day. Lots of beverages like soft drinks and high energy drinks can in reality drain your body of water. Try drinking water and avoid other types of drinks.

These 5 natural treatment methods are all acknowledged as being safe and are very successful in relieving migraine headaches in many individuals There are many other good natural treatment strategies that may additionally bring helpful results, some of which may give you relief.

While it’s true that all types of headaches may cause us some type of discomfort, not all are alike as the pain may range from the mild to the excruciating. There are several types of headaches, some caused by underlying medical conditions, while others are due to stress or environmental causes.

There are quite a few different reasons for a headache to occur. Basically, anything that causes the pain receptors in the neck and head area to be stimulated will cause the sensation of a headache.

Some of the most common causes of headaches include:

- Straining the eyes.

- Neck or head injuries.

- Dental problems.

- Muscle tension.

- High blood pressure.

- Sinus disorders.

- Certain medications.

There are several different types of headaches, all of which can be grouped into two major categories; primary or secondary. Primary headache disorders include migraines, tension, cluster, and the ordinary, average headache that most of us have experienced at one time or another.

Primary headaches may include:

Migraines: Affecting women nearly three times more often than men, migraines are believed to be caused in part by the hormone estrogen and may be more intense near menstruation. There are numerous symptoms of a migraine headache, some more severe than others, that may include mood changes, a stiff neck, loss of appetite or nausea, fatigue, and sensitivity to light and sound.

Tension Headaches: Tension headaches, unlike migraines, do not cause sensitivity to light or severe symptoms such as nausea or vomiting, but they are one of the most common types of headaches. Described as a squeezing sensation or a band of pressure around the head, tension headaches can be linked to stress and will affect about two out of every three people at least once during their lifetime.

Cluster Headaches: Cluster headaches are a relatively rare, but very painful type of headache that is far more common in males than females. Generally affecting one side of the head, cluster headaches cause a sharp, piercing pain that usually originates behind the eye causing nasal congestion or even symptoms such as nausea or sensitivity to light.

Secondary headaches are triggered by some other cause such as an injury, infection, tumor, allergies, or following surgery. Secondary headaches may include:

Chronic Headaches: Chronic headaches are diagnosed by the length of their duration, usually 15 or more days per month for three consecutive months, and are most often caused by stress and tension, or from certain medications.

Sinus Headaches: Sinus headaches are characterized by a dull, aching pain that’s usually in the front of the face or forehead that may last for days or weeks a time.

Sinister Headaches: The name ‘sinister headache’ is given to the type of headache that is associated with a serious condition such as a brain tumor, meningitis, or an aneurysm.

Treatment for headaches largely depend on the type of headache and its cause. Some of the methods used for controlling the pain and discomfort caused by headaches include:

- Over-the-counter medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

- Prescription medication.

- Stress management and relaxation techniques.

- Dietary changes.

- Alternative therapies such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, or chiropractics.

- Treatment for the primary cause of the headache if it is secondary in nature.

There is a great amount of misinformation about what headaches are and what causes them. Many people don’t know that there are different kinds of headaches, but there are many. It’s important to pay attention to your symptoms –chart them if you need to – and have a consultation with your doctor. There really isn’t any need to suffer needlessly. Once you can identify why you are having headaches, you can more easily find the best way to treat them. Many roads to treatment exist: medication, supplements, change in diet, exercise and stress relief (to name a few). It’s important to take a comprehensive approach to dealing with headache for the highest level of success, as well as to avoid as many other potential complications or side effects as possible.

Anyone who watches old movies or TV shows has seen someone, at some time, rub their head and complain about a tension headache. But, what is that? Do people still get them? Unfortunately, the answer is that people do, still, in fact get them. They seem to be often confused with just a good old fashioned headache. In other words, one that has no cure or cause. This just isn’t really how it is, however, and there are certainly many ways to treat a tension headache.

Back to … what is a tension headache, anyway? A tension headache is actually the most common type of headache that people suffer from. It’s known to be mild to moderate pain that feels to some like there is something wrapped around their head tightly. It is usually accompanies by a dull pain, not a sharp one, and some pressure across the forehead and the back of the head. It can last for a half an hours, or many days. Of course, the intensity of the headache varies from person to person.

The burning question then becomes, “How do I make it go away!” You can treat a tension headache with Fioricet. It’s a combination of acetaminophen, Butalbital and caffeine. This shouldn’t be a daily thing, however, and it’s important to follow other guidelines. Fioricet can help when you just can’t make the headache leave, but prevention of the headache may be possible. Watch what you eat, the old adage is really sage advice. Exercise, limit alcohol, and reduce stress. Getting plenty of sleep and having some fun are good stress reducers. Once you find yourself rubbing your head with a tension headache, you may wish you had!

Unfortunately, almost everyone has suffered the pain of a headache at some time. They can last for a few hours up to several days, and sometimes involve symptoms such as sensitivity to light and nausea. They can seriously impact daily life when they occur frequently or for an extended period of time.

A great hidden benefit of massage therapy is that headaches are relieved whilst the side effects that are often accompanied by prescription medication are avoided.

Since many tension and migraine headaches are accompanied by neck pain, headache sufferers find that manual therapies such as massage offer relief from headache pain and related symptoms. Because massage therapy relaxes tense muscles, relieves muscle spasms, improves blood flow and aids relaxation, it can be helpful for relieving the pain of both tension and vascular headaches.

The most common types of headaches are muscle tension and vascular headaches. Muscle tension headaches produce dull, constant pain on both sides of the head and may also involve an aching neck or sensitive scalp. They generally start slowly and can last from hours to days.

Another term for muscle tension headaches is muscle contraction headaches due to the tightening of the groups of muscles around the area of the head, face and neck that is the cause of the pain. This is why tension headache sufferers often describe their pain as a “vice-like grip” at their temples or as tightening bands around the forehead or along the base of the skull.

Vascular headaches are the ones many people describe as “pounding” or “throbbing.” They occur when the blood vessels that supply the brain and the muscles in the head swell and constrict. Vascular headache pain intensifies with physical activity and typically lasts from 4 to 72 hours. It may be associated with other symptoms such as vision problems, extreme sensitivity to light, and nausea. Migraines, cluster headaches and headaches that result from high blood pressure are all examples of the vascular type.

The relief that is created by massage therapy for both types of these headaches includes easing muscle tension and spasms, releasing shortened muscles plus the important effect of the relaxation of tension that is held in the muscles of the head, shoulders and neck. When muscle tension eases, there is less pressure on the nerves and blood vessels that supply them. Oxygen-rich blood circulation improves, which also relieves pain. Massage therapy will not only assist the body’s muscles in relaxing but it will also have the effect of reducing the anxiety and mental stress that can cause or worsen headaches in the first place.

Regular, ongoing massage therapy can also help to prevent headaches by helping to reduce overall stress and the muscle tension that can trigger headache pain and by helping to maintain emotional balance.

The secret to heal, improve, relieve, relax, even arouse just with the power of your hands? The beneficial effects of massage therapies available are too often ignored as a natural method of easing common ailments. It is not difficult to learn the basics of massage and the rewards are fantastic.

Are you suffering from constant chronic headaches? Headaches are a common ailment, but research has developed treatments that may help your problem almost disappear.

According to the National Headache Foundation (NHF) tension headaches affect nearly 78% of the adult population. 13% of the population suffers from migraines. Because the cause of migraines varies greatly, what relieves a migraine in one person may trigger an attack in another. The suggestions here are guidelines for those who suffer regularly from tension headaches which may have an identifiable physical cause.

WATCH WHAT YOU EAT

Some headache sufferers notice a connection with eating or drinking foods with aspartame. For those who are sensitive to the chemical it may cause blood vessels to expand in the brain and trigger a headache.

Caffeine is used to treat headaches. Its proprieties can assist pain medication in providing relief and can be found in medications to treat migraines. However, too much caffeine can have a ‘rebound’ effect and actually cause headaches. If you suffer from regular headaches you should avoid daily use of caffeinated beverages such as coffee and certain sodas.

According to the McKinley Health Center, avoiding tobacco can also reduce headaches.

Skipping meals may cause headaches in some people, so eating regular meals may prevent headaches in these individuals.

REDUCE THE STRESS

Getting enough sleep is important for everyone. If you suffer from tension headaches you may find getting your eight hours every night reduces the amount or intensity of your headaches. On the other hand, oversleeping can bring on a headache if you don’t get up at your regular time (such as on the weekend or during holidays).

Some headaches also seem to be aggravated by too much sun. Excessive exercise outdoors and lack of hydration can lead to headaches. Keep eyes shaded and be sure to drink plenty of water when outdoors.

Not surprisingly it was recently found that women wearing tight ponytails had an increased risk of tension headaches. Releasing or loosening the hair and performing a brief massage to the head can bring almost immediate relief.

MEDICATE

What you may think is a sinus headache may actually be a migraine. A consultation with your doctor may determine if you should switch to a migraine medication.

According to the NHF, tension headaches caused by stress should respond to reducing the stress or use of over-the-counter analgesics. However, if headaches occur almost daily you need to look for ways of dealing with the stress and discuss other options with your doctor.

As with caffeine, regular daily use of over the counter medications can actually cause headaches.

If headaches occur for long periods, are unusually intense or do not respond to pain medication after several days you should seek treatment and diagnosis from a health care professional.

If you lead a healthy and active lifestyle has many health benefits, including a reduction of tension-type headaches. By combining a healthy lifestyle with avoidance of triggers may help you find relief from tension-type chronic headaches.

Our vivid imaginations often have the power to alleviate or exacerbate stressful situations. On the one hand, we can come up with a lot of different solutions for the same problems; yet on the other, we also can create all manner of roadblocks for ourselves almost out of thin air.

The human mind is an incredible tool with the ability to envision all kinds of scenarios, and it is this capacity that can be your best ally or worst enemy as you’re trying to combat stress. After all, stress that’s caused by warranted things such as an emergency or an unexpectedly hard day at the office is troublesome enough, so why would we want to invent stress?

We’re going to discuss a few ways to turn our mind from an enemy into our friend. We’ve discussed the S.T.O.P. method in another article, and this technique builds on that tool. Once we’re in the habit of calling out our bad thoughts and pushing them out of the way, it’s time to put good thoughts and positive visualizations in their place. The mind will fill up emptiness with more thoughts, so why not use these techniques to make sure they’re thoughts that help, not hinder?

Visual Aid #1 – See the Goal

Remember that we’re not taking all these steps just to make our life more complicated or make ourselves feel bad! We each have a goal to reach, and these steps are part of the trip to that goal. So visualize yourself succeeding, and see yourself how you want to be. Imagine how good it will be to wake up not worrying about the rest of the day, and how great it will feel to go to bed knowing you have a handle on your problems.

As we know, stress has a major effect on our bodies. Too much of it can make us tense up, leading to bad posture and muscle aches or cramps. Imagine a good night’s sleep without those aches and pains, or without the headache that comes from worrying about a problem for hours and hours. See the goal, and keep it in mind.

Visual Aid #2 – See the Steps

There’s a trick that some runners use to keep themselves on track during a long course. Sometimes the goal does feel very far away, and it can be hard to see yourself getting from ‘here’ to ‘there’ at any one moment. Runners deal with this by picking out a landmark or feature a few minutes ahead of them, and choosing to reach it for the time being. The long journey then becomes a series of smaller stints that the runner can manage, and before long the finish line is in sight.

This is a powerful technique that works for visualizing efforts too. While you’re considering the goal, it might occur to you that all those nice results are a bit far away. Don’t panic, and instead start visualizing the steps toward that goal. Consider the important ones you’ve already made, and look to the next one. This will give you insights about how easy the course really is, and give you the courage to make each small step that will build up to those strong habits, a day or a week at a time.

Visual Aid #3 – See Your Friends and Family

A big part of why we don’t want to be stressed out is the effect it has on our friends and family. We miss out on fun activities because of stress headaches, we snap at someone when maybe we shouldn’t, or we are so distracted and irritated that we simply forget how much fun our loved ones can be.

As your next visual technique, spend a little time each day thinking about how your newfound outlook will help your family. Imagine being able to say ‘yes’ to more enjoyement because stress headaches are a thing of the past. Visualize how you want your evenings with your loved ones to be, instead of how they often end up because of stress. Remember that a small, conscious bit of time devoted to each step, each day will build up your habit into a rock-solid lifestyle.

Visual Aid #4 – See It Can Be Done

Some of us aren’t naturally visual people, or so we say. We’ve tried and tried to visualize things, but it just doesn’t work. However, don’t you find it easy to visualize how easily things can go wrong? Or even if it is true that you can’t really see, is it genuinely because it’s something you can’t do, or is it just something you can’t do–yet?

Any habit is hard to get into at first. Remember that it can take about sixty days for a habit to cement in your life sometimes. Try it, even if it seems to come hard. If you can’t visualize it in your mind, draw something on a fresh page of your stress log, even if it’s just a small smiley face with a note about something you found positive today. These little steps will add up, and will become much more natural as the days and weeks go on.

A Last Note

Sometimes, our visual mind doesn’t work on its own, but responds well to other people’s visuals. Ask someone to share a thought or a visual with you, about how to fight stress. This can be a ‘stress buddy’ or a family member, or even someone you only just met. Take their idea and run with it, and see where the thoughts take you. You just might be pleasantly surprised.

Good luck, and here’s to stress free living.

If you suffer from frequent migraine headaches or maybe just once every few months, you know how painful and disruptive a migraine can be. You might have had to call off work early or take the entire day off from work or miss a family social event due to a migraine headache. You may have tried to take OTC drugs to help stop a migraine before it starts or reduce the pain while it was occurring with little luck maybe even going as far as getting a prescription drug from the doctor. Many prescription drugs prescribed for migraines have side effects such as nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, weight gain, low blood pressure, decreased sex drive and even insomnia… yet the prescriptions do little to alleviate the pain.

If you seem to be in this category don’t lose hope, there is good news regarding migraine prevention. Butterbur extract is an all natural herbal supplement that can help prevent migraines with out serious side effects. In Germany, this herb has been used for many years successfully to prevent migraines. Now available in the United States for several years, Butterbur Standardized Extract has been validated by clinical studies. Large multi-center studies involving hundreds of migraine suffers have found Butterbur extract to prevent or significantly reduce the effects of a migraine when taking on a regular basis. (3,5) In this article we will discuss how Butterbur extract prevents migraines and its safety.

You might have asked your self already, what exactly is Butterbur? Butterbur’s common name is Petasites hybridus which is a member of a large family of flowers, herbs and shrubs in the plant kingdom. The key component in Butterbur researchers believe reduces migraines is called Sesquiterpenes (Petasin). Petasin has antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory activity which helps prevent migraines from starting. (6-7) All the clinical trials done on Butterbur used a standardized extract of 7.5mg Petasin per 50mg of the extract.

Let’s look at what the difference is between migraine and headache tension. The Journal of American Medical Association Migraine Education Center says there are several differences in the two types of headaches. Tension headaches can span from hours to days and is usually located over the entire head. The intensity of tension headaches is usually mild to moderate as a dull or pressing pain in the head. Generally tension headaches have minimal to no symptoms. Migraine headaches on the other hand can last for at least 4 hours to as long as 72 hours or 3 days. Generally, migraine headaches are located on the sides of the head and are often sever in pain. Migraines can be pounding, throbbing, and increase with intensity with physical activity. Migraines are usually followed by symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, with sensitivity to light, sound and odors.

Migraine headaches are usually caused by blood vessels swelling and expanding with inflammation in surrounding tissues in the brain. Researchers know what happens when a migraine attack happens, but have yet to conclude what causes the migraine originally (what is the trigger point). Most people who experience migraines have family members who experience migraines as well. Migraines headache episodes decline as people get older (1,5) With migraines, individuals sometimes experience unique symptoms; 20% of individuals experience and Aura prior to an attack. Most Aura’s are flashes of light or zigzagging lines making reading difficult and are followed by a migraine headache. Trigger factors are usually what cause the migraine and discovering one’s trigger point can help one greatly reduce there occurrence of a migraine. Certain foods or events can cause a trigger of the migraine. Documenting dietary habits such as chocolate, alcohol, and skipping a meal can help you determine what your trigger might be. Sometimes very bright lights and strong odors, stress such as job loss or divorce can also be a trigger, even hormone factors like menstruation can trigger a migraine. (1,2)

Butterbur extract can help prevent a migraine. Scientists discovered Butterbur extract has the ability to prevent blood vessel expansion during a migraine, while also preventing inflammation which can intensify the migraine experience.

A double blind placebo-controlled clinical trail showed where Butterbur extract actually works to reduce migraine suffering. This study provided accurate and verifiable results and reproducible results. One study with 58 people who experienced 3 or more migraines each month consumed butterbur extract standardized to 7.5mg of Petasin twice a day compared to the placebo group, experienced significant reduction in occurrence and frequency of migraine attacks. (3) While the study was being conducted, members of each group were asked how they felt and 74% of the butterbur extract group stated they had no occurrence of migraines compared to the placebo group.

The individuals who were recruited for these studies were required to discontinue the medications they were taking for migraines to effectively eliminate the possibility of any effect from other medications while the studies are conducted.

Another study conducted divided the butterbur extract group in two and half the group received 100mg total extract and the other group received 150mg total extract each day to see if there was any benefit to taking more butterbur. The group of people who received the 150mg each day of butterbur extract experienced a sixty two percent reduction in the number of attacks compared to the placebo group and less frequency then the 100mg per day group. So there is added benefit to consuming high milligrams each day divided through out the day.

You may be wondering if you can take Butterbur extract with standard migraine medication. The answer is yes. Butterbur extract does not interfere with any migraine medications including prescription medications. (3,4) Most sever migraine suffers take more than one medication so butterbur extract is perfect for those individuals on multiple medications because it has very few side effects. When adding butterbur extract to your regiment of migraine medication be patient because butterbur extract takes up to four weeks before one will start to experience its effects.

For those of you who only experience one migraine a month or less, the research is still investigating butterburs ability to help. If you feel like a migraine is coming on, take 100mg of butterbur extract followed by 50mg every two hours but do not exceed 250mg per day. The second day take 50mg of butter bur extract morning, noon, and night three times the second day. This should successfully help you fight off your migraine.

There are very few side effects with consuming butterbur. In one of the studies, several of the patients experienced some mild gastrointestinal upset. Butterbur extract shouldn’t be taken for more then four to six months, then discontinued. Even after discontinuing use, the butterbur will continue to work, because butterbur extract take a while to eliminate from the body. If a migraine returns, you can take the butterbur extract for another four to six months before discontinuing use again.

Between 11 & 18 million people in America experience migraines every year. Although there is no cure for migraines, butterbur extract may help reduce the frequency or intensity of your migraine. Standardized Butterbur extract and other great herbal supplements can be found at your local health food store or internet health food stores.

Migraine Headache Pain Relief Management

This article is about migraine headache pain relief management. The author informs readers on how migraine headache pain differs from other kinds of pain; enumerates the different causes of headache pain; as well as explains the various types of headache pain. The article also cites a couple of guidelines and precautions on using headache pain relief medications.

One of the most complex forms of illnesses is the migraine headache pain. In fact, this condition is very common as it does not only triggers adults, but teenagers and children as well. Although unpleasant, headache pain is basically regarded as a normal part of a person’s daily life. Since headache pain is among the top reasons for medical appointments to doctors and physicians today, it only proves that there is really nothing more typical on this type of illness.

The major causes of headache pain vary from the different cases of headache. Among the top factors that trigger headache pain are viruses, bio-chemicals, hormones, and bacteria. Genetics also has something to do with a person’s susceptibility to headache pains. People with low levels of serotonin are more likely to suffer from headache. Serotonin is the neuro-chemical that protects an individual from pain.

Determining different types of headache pain

While irritating and unpleasant pain is inevitable in all types of headache, it actually comes in different forms. It is really important for one to know the various types of headache pain in order to have proper diagnosis and application of headache pain relief treatments.

   1. Migraine headache pain

This type of pain occurs on the one side of the head. The pain can become severe to the point that it can interfere with a person’s daily productivity.

   2. Cluster headache pain

This type of headache pain is severe and sudden. Although a cluster headache has a shorter duration compared to other types of headache, it can trigger up to six times in one day.

   3. Sinus headache pain

An infection, swelling, and irritation of the sinuses can spark a sinus headache pain. This type of headache pain is oftentimes mistaken with tension and migraine pains.

   4. Rebound migraine headache pain

A rebound migraine headache pain is oftentimes caused by over-consumption of migraine headache medications. Instead of diminishing the pain, pain reliever drugs can ultimately cause headache pains when abused.
