Stress headaches are incredibly common, especially in our stressed out culture and while the easiest fix is to pop an aspirin or another over the counter medication for a quick solution but the better plan is to find a long term and permanent solution to keep the headaches at bay. If you only suffer from headaches once in a while, that isn’t a big deal but if they happen a lot, you should try to figure out the underlying cause of them. If your headaches are really severe, you should visit your doctor but you might also find some relief from the following remedies.

You can ease your stress headache with an ice pack. It’s possible to make a quick ice pack using a bag of ice or bag of frozen veggies and wrapping a towel around it. Lie back in a comfortable spot and try to relax while using the ice pack on your forehead, the top of your head and the back of your neck (move it every few minutes from one location to the other). Let it sit the longest where you feel the most pain. Ice acts as an anti-inflammatory which helps lower the amount of pain you are feeling. This won’t address the cause of your tension headaches, but it can be quick way to get relief.

Perhaps the most common cause of the stress headache is dehydration so drinking more water might be a good solution. You don’t always know right away when you are dehydrated particularly if you are distracted by work or other things. Remember: it is a bad idea to drink beverages that are caffeinated like soda or coffee because these can make your headaches worse. Drinking water or maybe some herbal iced tea or pure fruit juice is the best way to rehydrate your body. Eating salty foods contributes to dehydration so you can further help yourself by cutting back on your junk, snack and salty food intake.

Exercise is a great remedy for stress headaches. This is probably too obvious but you’re probably not going to want to exercise if you have a bad headache. You need to concentrate on getting more exercise in general though because that is what will help you reduce the frequency of your headaches. You can prevent your headaches by increasing your oxygen levels and circulation and that is helped best by Aerobic exercise. You shouldn’t try to work out while you have a headache; just start including it in your routine a few times each week and you should see the frequency of your headaches get smaller. There are many ways to treat stress headaches, and you can try one or more of the methods we’ve looked at above. Overall, the best way to prevent these type of headaches from occurring is to learn how to relax, even in situations that tend to make you tense. It will be hard at first but you’ll eventually learn how to keep life from overly stressing you out. Reducing your stress does quite a lot for you not the least of which is stopping your stress headaches.

If you are forced to deal with lots of stress–and lots of people are–headaches might be a problem that you are forced to deal with. Most people have to deal with headaches every so often but for some people they can be debilitating and chronic. While you need to get help from your doctor if you have headaches frequently or severely, home remedies like the ones we’ll be talking about here could also help you.

A quick and easy way to ease a stress headache is to use an ice pack. A good simple ice pack is a towel wrapped around a bag filled with ice or even around a bag of frozen veggies. Lie down and try to relax while putting the ice pack on your forehead and moving it every few minutes to the top of your head and your forehead. If one spot hurts more than another, make sure it gets extra time with the ice pack. Ice has the effect of numbing pain, and it can reduce the inflammation that’s causing the headache. While this won’t cure the cause of your tension headaches it can offer some quick and temporary relief.

You might not think that your posture plays a role in your headaches but if you have chronic bad posture, this could be the source of at least a few of them. People who spend a long time working at a computer stations, for example, suffer from this problem. Leaning forward with your head can be especially problematic, as this causes extra pressure on the neck and back. You want to keep a feel out for any extra tension in your neck and shoulders as you sit or walk around. Aside from sitting up straight while you work, you should get regular massages and regular chiropractic treatments.

There are also other systems, such as the Alexander Technique and Feldenkrais Method that work specifically on healthier posture. You can look for a professional practitioner of these methods or you can learn more about yourself by doing an internet search for videos that you can learn from.

The foods and drinks you take in can contribute to your headaches but most people don’t realize this connection. The things you think are tension headaches can sometimes be caused by allergies and food sensitivities. Many people get headaches after consuming alcohol, even when they only drink a little bit of it. Caffeine, especially for people who drink a lot of it, is another very common culprit behind headaches. Cutting back on caffeine is often the solution to getting rid of frequent headaches. Some people get headaches from eating other foods, such as chocolate, cheese or peanuts/peanut butter, depending on what you’re sensitive to. Try to find out if there is a connection between foods that you are eating and drinking and the headaches that have been causing you problems. To sum up, stress headaches are very common and can be caused by many things like not getting enough sleep, drinking too much or even just simple stress. You need to be able to properly identify the source of your headaches and address them, even when it means making changes that you might find inconvenient. Nobody wants to have to deal with constant headaches, so it is important to do what you need to do to keep them at bay.

Acne is an unpleasant condition that affects the majority of people in the world at some time or other in their lives (usually during their teenage years). It is caused by overactive sebaceous glands producing too much sebum (skin oils).Do you suffer from GERD or acid and reflux disease? A good healthy diet for GERD can often cure GERD rather than just suppressing it with medication. Doctors often prescribe medication to prevent the effects of acid and reflux or GERD but the fact is that this medication really doesn’t do anything to cure these problems.

People frequently refer to acid and reflux disease as heartburn. The word is a misnomer. The acid and reflux condition has nothing to do with the heart we only mistake it as a burning of the heart area because of the proximity of the esophagus to the heart.
When you are forced to live a stressful lifestyle (and lots of us are these days) headaches can be a major hassle. Stress headaches happen to everyone but they happen to some people more than others. While you need to get help from your doctor if you have headaches frequently or severely, home remedies like the ones we’ll be talking about here could also help you.

Aromatherapy has proven to be a simple and effective treatment for stress headaches. If you haven’t yet given it a chance yet, you’re probably wondering how smells can stop headaches but the simple fact is that our brains actually do respond to different smells and the correct one can have quite a relaxing effect and can even stop pain. Peppermint oil, to use one example, is one of the best for this situation and it also costs the least. Lavender, eucalyptus and sandalwood are also good. You can buy various devices for spreading the fragrance of essential oils around a room, but you can also get the benefits simply by sniffing the bottle or putting a couple of drops on your wrists and forehead. You should try different fragrances and find out which ones work best for you.

One of the most common causes of the stress headache is dehydration so drinking more water might be a good solution for you. You may not always realize it when you’re dehydrated, especially if you’re distracted by work or another activity. Try to remember that drinking caffeinated drinks isn’t the answer; things like soda and energy drinks can make your headache worse. If you want to rehydrate yourself, you need to drink plain water or, if you hate plain water, herbal iced tea or some pure fruit juice. When you eat too much salty food your dehydration can get worse so cutting back on the salt is a good idea.

Exercise can be a good remedy for stress headaches. This might seem a little obvious but it’s not likely that you will want to work out when you have a bad headache. What you need to think about, though, is get more exercise overall which can result in having fewer headaches. Aerobic exercise is great for raising your oxygen levels and circulation and that can help you prevent headaches. Don’t attempt to exercise while you have a headache but work it into your regular routine a few times a week and eventually you should see some real improvements. There are a lot of different ways to treat your stress headaches including the methods we’ve talked about here. For the most part, the best way to keep these kinds of headaches away is to make an honest effort to lower your stress levels even in stressful situations. It might be difficult, but you can teach yourself how not to let your life stress you out too much. There are lots of benefits that come with lowering your stress and having fewer headaches is just one of them.

Article by Trude Heskestad

Medical professionals have grouped 2 types of stress headaches: chronic and episodic.A tension headaches is considered as episodic when it never happens for longer than two weeks in a thirty days. If the frequency of the episodic headache will last for over 14 days,it might be a constant stress headache. The life of an individual suffering from chronic tension headache is not easy due to the frequent pain.

Not all times pain from continual stress headache is severe; yet, it still very inconvenient to feel pain while doing every day tasks. It reduces the efficiency of an individual to do some reading , conduct calculations or use the computer which are usual tasks for a desk job.Reported by Patient UK, a healthcare web site that informs the general public, chronic stress headaches occurs to 3 out of 100 adults . However, even health professionals are perplexed about the cause of the condition. Stress can be one major cause of the condition. For this reason ‘tension-type headache” could be a more appropriate term than stress headache. Continual tension headache can happen without any reason at all. Probable factors that create the condition are :

* Emotional tension, anxiety, tiredness or stress

* Physical stress in the muscle mass of the scalp and neck.To illustrate, people who have desk jobs and sit all day with poor posture can acquire tense muscle tissue. People should avoid squinting their eyes while reading so as not to cause tension in scalp muscle mass.

* Physical factors – bright sun light, cold, heat, noise, etc.

Actually, continual stress headache is not just caused by these conditions. A highly-recommended tip for determining the real cause is by going to a doctor who can look at the muscular tissues in the head and neck. Medical practitioners may also ask patients to undergo several laboratory testing. Some investigation points too genetic make-up may be a probable cause.

If people inherited this condition from their mother and father, then they are more prone to suffer from pain even if the triggering factor is minimal. The only recourse then would be to look for alternative therapy such as massage to reduce the pain and provide comfort. For some people, the option is to take over the counter medicine ( OTC ) to relieve pain but this is not a good practice. As a replacement, search for more natural remedies that are safe to use ultimately.

Question by Jana: How do I get rid of stress headaches?
I get stress headaches all the time usually from school; I’m in high school. It makes it really hard to focus on the lesson and it puts me in a bad mood. I read online that your supposed to lay in a dark room and relax, but I can’t do that in school and I can’t bring and asprin to school with me either cuz we aren’t allowed. Any tips on how to get rid of them during school or at least lessen the intensity??

Best answer:

Answer by Douglas B
Headaches of all kinds get their start with tight neck muscles. It’s what all happens after that cause people to give them different names. Your neck muscles go to the top of your head for its movements and when the muscles are tight at the top they pull on other muscles that go around the brain and when they get tight and give you pain you have your headache. The stress people feel is because the tight muscles restrict everything going in and out of your head and when the wastes back up it puts more pressure in your head, feels like stress. To get rid of the headache you have to free up your neck muscles and here’s how to do that:
Neck
Put your hands alongside your head so your thumbs are on the front of the muscle under your ear and your fingers are on the back of the muscle behind your neck. Squeeze your thumb and fingers together and hold. Relax your body. When your fingers and thumb touch, about two minutes, slowly lower your head as far as you can, release the pressure but hold your neck lowered for another 30 seconds.
For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.

Stress headaches are so very common, but how do you sooth them? Of course, you can always take an anti-inflammatory drug or an over-the-counter pain medication. This will get rid of your headache, true, but it’ll most likely be back the next day, or the next time you’re under significant amount of stress.

If you’d like another solution to just popping pills all the time, there is an effective and practical treatment. There’s no guarantee that you’ll never have a headache again, and there are no guarantees that you’ll get instant relief, either. However, these techniques will help you relieve your stress and thus your headache, so that you can enjoy life once again.

One of the first culprits in your life if you are continually experiencing stress headaches is that you’re not getting enough sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep, you’re only aggravating your headache and stressing yourself out further. It can be a vicious cycle, too, since if you’re stressed, you may not sleep well, which causes you to have more stress, which may cause you to sleep even more poorly, and so on. However, there are things you can do to improve your situation. Listen to soothing music before you go to bed, or go to see a hypnotherapist, or practice self-hypnosis. These are all things that can help you go to sleep, as long as you don’t have true insomnia. If you do have true insomnia, then it’s best to seek medical advice, but you can certainly try these techniques first before you determine that you may indeed have insomnia that needs a doctor’s treatment.

Exercise is also a great stress reliever, and can therefore relieve stress headaches as well. When you exercise, you boost your immune system, your stamina, and your strength. And, it’s also a great way to relieve stress. It lets you get rid of the negative energy you’ve built up during the day, and in addition gives you positive mental and physical benefits besides. You can start out simply with a brisk walk, jumping rope, or jogging; if you want something more interesting and intense, you can choose anything from martial arts to yoga.

Another great way to relieve stress is to get a massage. Massages are great for stress relief, and are especially popular among women. A head or neck massage can give you relief from a stress headache, and a full body massage can give you a relaxed feeling all over — including from tension that would cause headaches.

All of these things can help you get rid of those stress headaches that have been plaguing you. In addition, as you work on this, try to develop a good attitude as well. A positive attitude can help keep stress headaches away, too. If you organize your day so that you’re more efficient at work, this, too, will help you avoid the problems of stress headaches.

People generally find shorter waits better than longer ones. But, according to a new study, there are still times when a shorter waiting period leads to increased stress.

According to a new study, conducted by Elizabeth Gelfand Miller of Boston College, Barbara E. Kahn of University of Miami, and Mary Frances Luce of Duke University, when waiting for events, such as a doctors appointments or a job interview the level of stress aggravates even if the waiting period is shorter.

Wait management strategies that are effective in Disney World may cause more stress if implemented in a hospital waiting room, the researchers said. Given that waiting has historically been viewed as negative and that it is likely the only stressor during many (positive) service encounters, shorter waits are generally viewed as better than longer waits.

However, we propose that the wait itself can facilitate coping with negative events, and thus, that longer waits may result in less stress, they added. In one of the experiments of the study, college students waiting to participate in a group discussion about an undisclosed topic were reviewed.

Some students were informed that they were expected to give an impromptu speech as part of a Career Services exercise and would be judged on demeanour and appearance. Others were told they would merely observe.

In the follow-up questionnaire, students who had been in the neutral waiting condition were far more likely to rate the waiting duration as their biggest source of annoyance. In contrast, those who had been told they had to give a speech used the waiting time to mentally prepare for the discussion group.

When the waited-for event is negative, [we] found that consumers were less concerned about potential stress that came from waiting. In fact, in some cases consumers actually preferred extra waiting time so that they could cope with the impending event, the researchers said.

In an experiment where participants were required to wait before engaging in a specific task, shorter waiting times and information about how long the wait would be reduced total stress for those waiting for neutral events, but increased total stress for those waiting for negative events.

Our work provides a new perspective on managing waits. While the waiting literature has historically viewed waits as something negative that should be reduced, we demonstrate that the validity of this assumption is contingent on the situation, write Miller, Kahn, and Luce.

Traditional strategies that focus only on the wait and not the overall experience may result in wait management strategies that can exacerbate overall customer satisfaction rather than improve it, they added.

A very close friend of mine has always had trouble dealing with stress… he has literally passed out in seizures because he keeps things bottled up inside. He is beginning to have sharp piercing headaches that come on him all of the sudden then go away only to come back a few minutes or days later. He has also begun to have nose bleeds and he has a twitch in his arm. Since he has had seizures from this, I think the twitches are an early sign.

What can be done to help him? Is it most likely his stress he isn’t coping with?

Lifestyle changes to reduce your overall stress levels are important.

1. No multi-tasking: Do not multi-task. Although you may think this is a time-efficient way to go about things, you will rapidly become overloaded. The more stimuli you impose upon yourself, the greater the activity of your stress glands. Keep your tasks or jobs simple; that means one at a time, and do them well. When you are finished move on to the next.

2. Learn to say ‘No’: People often have a problem saying ‘no’ end up saying ‘yes to everything, taking on too much for fear of hurting or upsetting others. They end hurting themselves. Learn what your boundaries are, and how much you can handle. Once you reach that limit, do not take on any more. Others will understand, for they themselves are on overload, otherwise they would not be asking for your help.

3. Avoid known stressors: If there are certain parts of your day where you know you will encounter stressors, try to alter your pattern. For instance, if you get upset in traffic try not to leave the house at rush hour. Get up a little earlier so you can miss the traffic – and possibly go for a workout before your working day begins. Then you can leave the office sooner and miss the traffic on the way home. If you can’t avoid the traffic, then prepare yourself for it. Bring some soothing music to listen to, or a tape of something you want to learn. At least then if you are sitting in traffic, you can enjoy yourself.

4. Don’t set unrealistic goals: Many of us want to do everything and do it as quickly as possible. We are impatient and our society has programmed us to expect results straight away, whether that be in health care, career advancement, or via high-speed Internet. Our failure to achieve goals is a major stressor. Reset your goals to be attainable, and attainable within realistic time frames.

5. Positive affirmation: Wake up and look in the mirror and take note of one positive thing a day. If you see something you don’t like, then look away for now. Don’t focus on the negative, however hard that may seem. The actual process of looking for ‘good’ is calming – and finding it will improve your mood and outlook. Some simple at-home techniques for reducing stress:

Massage: By reducing stress and increasing your feel-good brain hormones, dopamine and serotonin, massage makes you more relaxed, happier and it decreases your hunger-centre activity. This leads to less stress and less craving. Massage therapy is defined as the treatment of disease or injury through the manual manipulation of body tissues. Massage is employed for the relief of pain and spasm, to induce relaxation, to stretch and break down scarring and adhesions, and to increase circulation and metabolism.

It promotes the resorption and metabolism of toxins and the residua of inflammation. The relaxation benefits of massage therapy are not just subjective – massage has been shown to decrease both noradrenaline and cortisol levels in the blood, urine and saliva. That wonderful feeling you get at the end of a massage is not just from lying down quietly for a period of time. There is a significant therapeutic effect from receiving regular massage therapy, which clearly goes far beyond simple musculoskeletal pain relief. Simple massage techniques can also be practised at home to help relieve stress.

1. Use a massaging shower-head, which augments the benefits of superficial heat from the water.

2. Move a simple wooden roller-type massager back and forth across the neck, back or feet.

3. Use commercial electric massagers, with or without heat.

4. Have a partner apply slow, gentle, finger, thumb or hand pressure.

Safety: Contraindications are few.

Following acute injury or a severe flare-up of an existing injury, or in the presence of an open wound, local massage would not be advisable in that area. However, distant massage or massage therapy performed on other parts of the body is advisable to help increase the effects of the immune system and decrease inflammatory mediators, and cortisol levels. In order to receive these benefits, massage can be performed anywhere on the body. It is avoided in certain cancers to avoid promoting spread.

Aromatherapy: Aromatic healing oils can be used during a therapeutic massage. These essential oils are absorbed both through inhalation and through the skin during a treatment. Throughout the massage, lymphatic drainage, muscle releases and spinal pressures are applied to target the nervous system. Each oil has a different effect, ranging from toxification and relaxation to increasing energy levels. Essential aromatherapy oils for relaxation and stress relief are:

• Amber

• Bergamot

• Camphor

• Cedarwood

• Lavender

• Poppy

• Ylang-ylang

And there are several ways you can use essential oils:

• Diffuser – a small metal bowl heated by a candle

• A few drops in a warm bath

• In a massage oil

• A few drops in a facecloth or sponge in the shower

• As a perfume

How to make sure you get sufficient sleep:

• Reduce your stress levels: Deep breathing, meditation and massage therapy on a regular basis can decrease overall stress and promote restful sleep. Aromatherapy can also be used before bed. Burn a lavender candle or put a little lavender oil on your pillow. Supplements to help you sleep include melatonin, passionflower and hops (the herbal extract, not the beer).

• Get into a routine: Our body loves routine. Providing it with a rehearsed setting for sleep is a valuable step towards a good night’s sleep. This means getting into bed at about the same time each night.

• Dim the lights: Once we fall asleep our body starts to produce melatonin, our sleeping hormone. It changes our brain waves from the active beta waves to the calm theta waves of deep sleep. Production of this hormone is also linked to light and darkness. Our body will increase the production of melatonin when it is dark and suppress its production in the light.

So try to make your room as dark as possible to mimic night-time and increase production of your sleeping hormone. It is also wise not to spend your last hour before getting into bed under bright lights. This will hinder the secretion of melatonin and make sleep more difficult.

• Exercise: Try to avoid vigorous exercise in the evening, as this is likely to increase cortisol and other stimulatory hormones, which will make relaxation difficult.

• Food and drink: Eating early (between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. if you plan to go to bed around 10 p.m.) will allow your food to digest before sleep and maximise the fat-burning time between dinner and breakfast.

Avoid a large meal late in the evening, as it is likely to give you a higher than normal peak in glucose levels due to the inactivity that follows as you wind down for the evening. This will increase your hunger hormones, making you want to snack again before bed.

Alcohol is also known to increase hunger hormones, so avoid this if you are having trouble sleeping. Caffeine in tea, coffee or soda can have a long-lasting stimulant effect, interfering with restful sleep. Try to avoid them after lunchtime and certainly during the evening.

The holidays finally are over, but stress is always with us. So it’s important to find ways to reduce it. “Different people swear by different things,” says Kathryn Bishopric, a registered nurse at South Miami Hospital’s Behavioral and Collaborative Medicine Program, which offers medical and behavioral anti-stress approaches, from yoga and tai chi to massage and art therapy.

She and Dr. Miguel Almunia, a psychiatrist consulting with the program, run through a dozen different methods of stress relief and explain how they work.

Exercise: It helps the body process and excrete adrenaline and cortisol, two chemicals the adrenal gland creates when the body is under stress. And it stimulates the pituitary gland and hypothalamus to create those feel-good peptides we fondly call endorphins. Endorphins reduce pain and induce a sense of well-being.

Distraction: See a movie. Go fishing. Stop and smell the roses. Doctors aren’t sure what goes on chemically, but PET scans can measure how it moves your brain waves into the relaxed alpha state. You’re awake, but no longer hyper-alert, no longer obsessing about the problem at hand. Computer fans call it rebooting the brain.

Laughter: It’s more than distraction; it has the almost instantaneous effect of relaxing the brain, and it can be measured by EEGs, Ms. Bishopric says. “A good laugh literally affects the entire brain; very little else does that,” she says.

Crying: Tears of sadness or frustration contain, and thus excrete, toxic chemicals that do not occur in the tears from, say, chopping an onion, Ms. Bishopric says. “Laughing is still better than crying – unless you really need a good cry.”

Sleep: It also reboots the brain. A good eight hours is essential, according to studies comparing the performance of rested people to that of tired people pumped up on coffee. Tired folks have less intellectual ability, more irritability, even depression. Doctors are so impressed they’re even (occasionally) cutting the 36-hour-shifts they used to demand of interns.

Diet: Stressed people become hungry for the comfort of high-sugar, high-fat foods. But these burn off quickly, leaving them edgy, irritable and even more stressed. Fight stress with a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables and protein. Supplements, especially B vitamins and minerals, can help if you have an incomplete diet. But a good diet is better.

Meditation: In “agnostic mindfulness meditation,” people are taught not to empty their minds but to focus them, to pay more attention to the task at hand. Think of Shaq when he’s in the zone. He might even make a free throw.

Another type of meditation is religious. From a medical perspective it is a relaxation state. Some say prayer is talking to God, and meditation is listening to Him.

Yoga, tai chi: These combine meditation and exercise plus another crucial factor, social support. Some say we have three families, a family of origin (parents, siblings), a family of nurture (spouse and kids), and a family of choice (yoga class).

The latter is made up of people who are unrelated but whom we like to be with. An American Psychological Association study says people with the most supportive relationships rebounded best from the traumatic stress of 9/11.

Wine: In small amounts, it can help you relax, “but it’s not recommended as a medication,” Dr. Almunia says. Chemically, it’s a depressant. It will sedate you and later have a rebound stimulant effect. So it’ll put you to sleep, but wake you an hour later. Use with care.

Herbal teas: A nice brew of ginseng, for instance, can relax you, Dr. Almunia says. “I do believe they have a calming effect; it’s been documented through the ages.” Herbs such as St. John’s Wort or valerian are for depression, not anxiety, he says, and may interact with drugs.

Aromatherapy: It can help, he says. Burning cinnamon, vanilla or other flavors of oil or incense relaxes some people. “It could be both physical and mental.”

Drugs: Don’t turn here for relief of temporary stress, Dr. Almunia says. These are for longer-term, more serious anxieties. If you’re in that category, see your doctor.
