Do you feel yourself suffering from headaches on a regular basis, and no amount of painkillers and tablets can help to cure them and remove them, then this may be because you suffer from TMD (Temporomandibular joint Disorder).

TMD is a condition where the joints and muscles in your jaw are not properly aligned and thus meaning you have an incorrect bite. With this incorrect bite, your jaw muscles and joints try to accommodate for the incorrect bite and therefore meaning a lot of stress and pressure being placed on each part.

TMD can cause incorrect bites, jaw clicking, grinding and notching of the teeth, tension headaches and more severe migraines, jaw swelling and even neck and back pain. Our TMJs allow our mouth to move in six different planes of motion when we chew our food or when we talk.

The jaw joint or what is also known as the temporomandibular joint is the hinge that connects our lower jaw to the temporal bone of our skull. In TMJ disorder, the joint itself or the muscles of the head and neck becomes inflamed, leading to a clicking or locking of the jaw, which can cause great discomfort, and limit your ability to talk and eat.

You will be advised to wear what is known as an orthotic, this therapeutic device will gradually re-align your jaw muscles and joint, so that you will feel less discomfort than you did before. It will also help to correct your bite which was previously out of shape.

After the use of the orthotic your dentist may advise you to undergo braces treatment just to realign your teeth or maybe some build-ups on your teeth and make sure that the TMJ is completely in line and has been treated fully.
