Understanding the Symptoms of Migraine Attacks
For many individuals who suffer from migraines, the intense, sharp pain is a symptom that’s easily identifiable. However, there are a number of other symptoms that can occur with a migraine attack, and they aren’t always so easily pinpoint. Knowing the symptoms that come with a migraine headache means you can properly identify whether or not you’re suffering from the condition.
Phases
A typical migraine can be divided into four different phases, each with its own set of symptoms. These are called prodrome, aura, the attack and postdrome. The first two are phases that occur in the time leading up to the migraine, and the third is the migraine attack itself. The last stage, postdrome, is the period when the symptoms ease off. Many sufferers will feel worn out and drained of energy during this phase, and need to lie down. Others will feel a sense of euphoria or relief at the sudden easing of pain.
Pain Symptoms
Pain is probably the most recognizable migraine symptoms, and it’s the symptom that most often leaves sufferers unable to carry on with their day to day tasks. The pain usually occurs during the third phase of the migraine progression, the migraine attack. The pain is typically relegated to one side, and it can be a throbbing or pulsating ache. This can be accompanied by a stiffness and pain in the neck. The pain can last anywhere from four hours to three days, depending on your level of sensitivity.
Sickness
Some symptoms of migraines are side effects usually associated with a sickness or illness. Diarrhea, nausea, constipation and other stomach issues can occur. This is most likely to happen during the first phase of the migraine symptoms, the prodrome. Also, food cravings are likely as your body prepares for the actual migraine attack, however stay away from any foods that might be associated with food allergies as this may make the attack worse. Some individuals also experience irritability, even before the actual pain of the migraine attack begins.
Sensory Symptoms
Some sensory symptoms can sometimes occur during a migraine attack. Loss of vision, or obscured vision, is fairly common. Also, sensitivity to light, sound and smells can sometimes happen. When this occurs, resting in a quiet, dark place can be helpful. These symptoms usually occur during the second phase of a migraine, the aura phase. This is the phase that the least amount of migraine sufferers will experience. Still, it can be a painful and frustrating phase.
If prolonged pain or discomfort occurs during a migraine, it may help to visit a doctor. Both over the counter and prescription medicines work well to curb the symptoms of a migraine attack.
