What’s the best painkiller medication for chronic daily headaches or migraines?
I have these constant headaches and occasional migraines and I’m wondering what’s the best non off the counter meds I can take, I know a doctor has to prescribe them, but which ones are safe and actually work? I tried naturals ways to prevent my headaches but it they don’t really help, or last for that long. I use Advil, Tylenol, they’re okay, but Excedrin is the best but I know I should not take it a lot because it could cause rebound headaches like any head-ache pill. And also if you’re someone who also suffers from headaches , what do you do to get rid of it ? (naturally ) and which meds do you use ? I really need help because these headaches are just killing me lately
- Thanks ♥
And I did want to add, that i’ve had an Mri and cat scan and my results came back normal

It really depends on the exact nature of what is causing your headaches.
If they are migraine in nature then I would recommend Topamax (daily use) as a preventative. It has great results with migraine sufferers.
If the headaches are a result of tension, scalp tension, other muscle tension etc — Then an antidepressant could have good long term results. Yes, you don’t have to be depressed to use antidepressant family of medication.
Any medicine designed to treat the pain is going to come under the same scrutiny you mentioned — rebound headaches,.. questionable effectiveness and so forth.
Some of the best medicines for treating the pain (ie: Opiate pain killers) are often the worst thing you can do for a headache because of the resulting cyles of rebound pain and lowered pain threshhold over time.
I’d recommend you seeing a headache specialist (M.D.) Sometimes this may be a neurologist, but can be a general practitioner as well.
Modification of overall lifestyle can be necessary to truly get headaches under control — which consists of dietary changes, exercise, sleep routine, stress management, and so forth. There isn’t always a magical pill for our ills.. we often have to put in more effort than we want to. Which is why so many continue to suffer. Also many people never seek out help until they get GOOD accurate answers. Most GP/PCP’s aren’t extremely well versed in the treatment of headaches — though you will eventually run across some that really know their stuff.
Good luck,
